Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Toshiba 42VL863

  1. Is this tv future proof or will it be discontinued in the near future?
    ken asked on
    1. no idea, it was a special offer so it may already be end of line.
      Philip replied on

    2. That is something you will need to ask the supplier you buy it from sorry
      Emma replied on

  2. whats the 3d like and is normal tv good?
    ann asked on
    1. 3D tv is really good but you can only view with the glasses provided, you cannot purchase the better ones. Normal tv is really good. Was a really good purchase all round.
      Debbie replied on

    2. Normal TV is pin sharp, 3D seems even better, works with real3D glasses you get from cinema as well as the supplied ones so plenty of spares.
      Philip replied on

    3. The 3d is very good however you need to have the tv at eye level to benefit from the full effect. The normal setting is very good and worth getting the tv even if you don't use the 3d setting.
      Emma replied on

  3. What do I need to connect to the Satellite LMB connection,I.e. will I be able to access the freesat HD content, with a dish and LMB?
    William asked on
    1. Not sure, I believe from the instructions you can connect the sky/freesat dish straight it to it and get free to air channels, there is a CAM slot what ever that is, but do not think there is any decoder.

We use sky HD+ and sky 3D is free with it.
      Philip replied on

    2. I am not sure about this as didnt set the tv up myself however the product description on the Currys website is very detailed.
      Emma replied on

  4. Does the tv come with the 3D glasses and if so how many?
    LJ asked on
    1. Mine came with 4 and 4 where sent on later by currys as 8 was part of the offer, works with the Real3D glasses you get from the cinema so plenty of spares.
      Philip replied on

    2. It depends where you buy it from. It will say on the product description. I brought my tv from Currys online. There was an offer on last month for the tv, a blue ray player and 10 pairs of 3d glasses for around £699.
      Emma replied on

    3. I received x4 pairs when it was delivered but should of received x8. Will pop back into the store to query this.
      Debbie replied on

  5. What wifi adapters will work on the 42vl863b for the smart tv feature?
    Lee asked on
    1. I believe it is a special Toshiba one and only that one can be used as the drivers are built in for it, not cheap, I am using a TPLink 743ND router set in client mode and connected to the lan port of TV, the WAN connects to my access point which just happens to also be TPLink 743ND in AP mode and that makes connection to intetnet
      Philip replied on

  6. HI, have you played a ps3 on it by any chance ? Desperate for a 3D tv but nobody seems to mention the quality while gaming....
    Simon asked on
    1. We have only used our xbox but the quality is really good with that.
      Debbie replied on

    2. Sorry No, the 3D is pretty good though, so if a PS3 and a 3D game is in Real 3D, it should be great, I have not seen on my son's PS3 any setting for switching the PS3 in to 3D mode, when the BlueRay player or Sky 3D is switched in to 3D, the picture is split in to 2 pictures, when you switch the TV to 3D you get an option to choose side by side or on top of each other, most are side by side, once you have done that the picture is offset slightly until you put the glasses on, it then lines up and low and behold a picture in Real 3D
      Philip replied on

  7. i am considering buying this TV in the next week or so and i was very intrigued by the massive 7,000,000:1 contrast that was advertised on pcworld.co.uk, however on Reevoo its claimed it is only 1600:1 which worries me because i brought a standard 23 inch 480p HD tv 4 years ago which has 4000:1 contrast...what i am asking is which is the right number 7,000,000 or 1600 contrast?
    Lee asked on
    1. The contrast is 7,000,000:1 if you look on the main websites like Currys, comet, pc world they will confirm this. Reevoo comments can be incorrect
      Emma replied on

    2. May be pcworlds model is different, it said 7 ,000,000 on the one I purchased, it is far better that the one my son has, like I said it can be viewed from a greater angle than most and that might be down to contrast ratio.
      Philip replied on

  8. Thinking about getting this tv but is there any picture problem viewing football.
    shaun asked on
    1. The 3D is fantastic, had to suffer City getting beat by United.
      Philip replied on

  9. Is this 3d TV Active or Passive?
    Dave asked on
    1. it is passive if you lose your glases you can use the ones you get from your local cinema (works out cheaper )
      David replied on

    2. It's passive.
      Lest replied on

    3. yes its passive and the glasses are £19,99 for 4 pairs

      Frank replied on

  10. How do you access freeview HD channels?
    C asked on
    1. Hello C, they are just there, in amongst the other channels in the Freeview guide?
      Lest replied on

    2. You need to read the instruction book that came with the TV it is all it there.
      Philip replied on

  11. hi does this model have freesat as well as freeview and are they hd please??
    sal asked on
    1. No it does not have freesat ut it does have HD
      David replied on

    2. the freeview channels are in hd eg bbc,itv1
      Frank replied on

  12. thanks guys, does it have a swivel stand or fixed? im torn between this and an lg, shhops suggest lg but i always thught tosh was a far better make.
    sal asked on
    1. The stand is fixed. Personally i would always choose a Toshiba over an LG, and the picture quality is amazing.
      Sam replied on

    2. Seems a really good tv. It has a swivel stand.

      Gary replied on

  13. Hi does it upscale 2d to 3d?
    bow asked on
    1. No it doesn't have that facility.
      Lest replied on

  14. Can i Watch youtube in 3d and Tv Programs In 3d ?
    Sophia asked on
    1. tv programmes if you have sky never tried you tube
      Frank replied on

    2. If you have something like sky HD 3D then you can
watch Tv programmes in 3D i do not know about
youtude as did not know done in 3d so will have try
      David replied on

  15. Hi guys, so far no one mention 3d resolution, is 1080p or 720
    Rafig asked on
    1. It's 1080 mate
      Gary replied on

  16. do i need to get the wifi dongle in order to use the iPhone app. I've hard wired mine to the modem but the iPhone is not picking it up.
    martin asked on
    1. Do not have an iphone or a wifi module, I have a ckeap TPLink router set as a client and connected direct to the lan port of TV to emulate the wifi module, the router connects the TV to the house network. This is what the WiFi module would do, my phone connects to the house network and thus to the TV.
      Philip replied on

  17. currys gave me ethernet cable (has golden ends) with the tv(charged for), tv is not delivered yet, is the ethernet cable to connect the tele to internet or just to connect it to the blue player
    sam asked on
    1. to connect tele to internet ok
      Frank replied on

  18. how do I get single screen when watching ch 217 on sky. have a split screen
    Sheena asked on
    1. Ch 217 is the 3D channel, select 3D on remote, then 3D on screen, then side by side, then OK, put your 3D glasses on and enjoy, you might have to ask sky to enable it but it is free with sky HD
      Philip replied on

  19. how is the quality of picture in 2D and 3D and is the interent access built in or needs be connected via cable
    sam asked on
    1. Excellent, first class picture in 2D and 3D, Wireless Internet requires the purchase of a optional toshiba USB WiFi module, but you can connect a cable to any router or you could connect to a inexpensive Wireless router configured as a wireless client to connect to your wireless access point, there are a number of ideal ones made by TPLink
      Philip replied on

    2. Picture quality is superb in both 2D and 3D. Internet access does need to be connected via a cable to the router or possibly a wireless router could be used.
      Debbie replied on

  20. guys help me here please as iv been getting conflicting information down at p c world...will it play 3d from a memory stick/ hard drive iv spent the last two weeks trying to get it to play 3d but no luck
    chris asked on

      David replied on

  21. have lost sound, has anyone experienced this, if so,what's the solution?
    Charles asked on
    1. never had this problem
      Frank replied on

  22. Hi there,
This tv has a great spec but we don't have Sky or BluRay 3d player, so wondering if this is still worth it for us. The 3D could be useful in the future but is it still a great buy anyway? What do you think?

    Thanks. Thommo :)
    thommo asked on
    1. Yes think so even if just got free view you can also get free view HD if you can get it in your area and it shows normal DVDs well
      David replied on

  23. Hi just wondering how you connect a Nintendo Wii to the TV, can't figure it out as the scart plug is to big.
    claire asked on
    1. use the connector you get with the tv

      Frank replied on

  24. how do i connect my surround sound to the tv as there are no red and yellow sound conections like my last tv?
    Mike asked on
    1. See page six of your tv user manual for instructions. There is only one input to the tv, its always active!!!! It has a red light around it on left hand side of the screen as you look from the front.
There is a very short cable in the pack that has one yellow end to go into the tv and 3 (red, white and yellow ends to take your surround sound system connections ....hope this makes sense!!!!
      Sue replied on

  25. lost all channels, tried retuning, also changed aerial, no joy.
    Any suggestion based on experience?
    C asked on
    1. Same thing happened to me .Had to get the set repaired after only 2 months .Rang Toshiba Customer Service who were no help at all I most certainly never buy a Toshiba product again
      Frank replied on

    Brian asked on
    1. 50 cms long and 29 wide or in inches just over 19 and 11
      Terence replied on

    Ryan asked on
    1. No Sorry
      Andy replied on

  32. Hi guys.
Does these Tv have a Web Browser or no ??
    Lachezar asked on
    1. Not sure, not tried, they have LAN and you can purchase a wifi adapter that plugs in and you can stream video from the NET, so I would assume they have some sort of browser.
      Philip replied on

  33. Anyone know how to get the Cartoon Network channel on there? Tried re-tuning etc and can not see it. Have the wifi adapter and that works but cant get this channel Thanks
    Carl asked on
    1. Once you are connected to the internet via your tv (i assume you have done this) press your menu button here you will see a menu called connected tv. here you will want to click on Toshiba places once you select this and agree there will be many options includeing Cartoon network. This is an on demand service not a network station (as far as im aware) you will be required to pay a subscription to use.
      Hope this helps
      Keiran replied on

  34. i have i toshiba smart tv could i add more apps in my tv?
    osman asked on
    1. I have seen any wsy to add more apps but you mightfind some at toshsiab places which is on the tv
      David replied on

  35. Does it feature 2D to 3D upconversion? This lets you watch 2D material in 3D.
    NITIN asked on
    1. Hi No sorry I don't think it has this feature. It does have a onscreen preferences to set the 3d but I don't recall it having the function to upgrade 2d to 3d, hope this helps

      John replied on

  36. Hi, I acquired the 42VL863B about 8 weeks ago and I am less than impressed with the sound. I am experiencing a sort of sound vibration / disportion at times even at fairly low volume. Don't know if the TV is faulty?
Would the fact that I don't have Sky HD just the standard Sky Plus which is connected to the TV via Scart have any effect? Thanks for any advice.”
    David asked on
    1. Hi....sorry for any delay......with regard to your 42VL863B.....mine was purchased 7 weeks ago..and originally it was set up without any sky connection and now i have it connected to sky hd plus and the sound quality in both situations is very good...regards from midge
      A verified owner replied on

    2. unfortunately I do not have sky so a unable to comment on this. However I have noticed the volume varies on HD channels to normal channels.
      Charles replied on

  37. I have down loaded some 3d side by side video from the You tube downloader.
The settings on downloader was mp4 ( no convert ) and 1080p high. I put it on a usb stick, taken to pcworld and find 3d will not play, but it will on LG 3d set.
Why? Is it the settings on downloader? I like the look of Tosh better than LG.
    Will asked on
    1. Sorry not tried down loading 3D only used for films.
      Frederick replied on

    2. unable to help as only used 3d for sky and films...
      Alan replied on

  38. Hey I've narrowed my search down to this Toshiba and a 40" Samsung and was wondering if this Toshiba has the equal or better picture quality in 2D and 3D as I much prefer the passive 3D and the Samsung has Active. Thanks
    Nathan asked on
    1. Got both myself, Toshiba much better uses same glasses as used in the Cinema.
      Philip replied on

    2. Can only speak for the Toshiba "First class 3D tv" .Also the glasses our a lot cheaper than active.
      Simon replied on

  39. I was just wondering how the picture quality on this TV compares to the big brands such as Sony, Panasonic and LG. Thanks
    Terry asked on
    1. I spent a lot of time choosing this tv, comparing it in store to the brands you mention - picture quality is excellent (as are the others), and I am very satisfied with it.
      Chris replied on

    2. spot on quaility 3D IS EVE BETTER
      Terence replied on

    3. Picture quality is very good until the digital signal drops off. Hopefully this will be rectified when we go fully digital in June. This is not the TV's fault though. Haven't used it in 3D yet unfortunately.
      Andy replied on

  40. I've just bought this TV and I am struggling to attach the TV to the stand.. Now I'm not sure if there is a part missing or if I'm just missing the bleeding obvious. I can't seem to find the part which gets screwed on top of the stand and onto the back of the TV. Can some please let me know if this is attached somewhere on the back of the TV and I need to unscrew it or am I missing a part?
    Matthew asked on
    1. There Should Be A Bracket That Is Screwed by 4 Screws Into The back Of The T.V. Then The Stand Fits Into The bracket. The bracket is not already on the back of the T.V. and should be with the stand. If not then the bracket is missing.
      Christopher replied on

  41. does it come with glasses?
    dave asked on
    1. yes, we got four pairs.
      Debbie replied on

    2. Yep it does, four pairs, passive ones easy to get more not as expensive as the active ones:)
