i have a sony bravia kdl 40hx803 i assumed it was 3d ready but now im being led to beleive that i require a tmr-br1oo 3d sync transmitter to enable the picture will 3d work if i buy this transmitter

Yes. It plugs into the back of the TV and sits just in front of it.

Just as Keith said then turn on glasses then depending on what 3d content you are watching you either press the 3d button upon the remote and select how to watch 3D Blu-rays are easier then sat/tv 3D they use different ways of broadcasting 3D content.
