Battery life is great can take on weeks holiday and use daily without recharge. Words on page are clear and true to life. Magnification is also good and does not reduce quality.
Bad points:
Uploading of books is cumbersome and never fails to irritate!
Page turn buttons are rather clunky and feels more so with touch screen technology used by other e readers.

Reallly well engineered and a nice piece of equipment
Bad points:
software for downloading books etc is really dreadful and lets the reader down. If you dont't sort this out you may as well leave the market place and just surrender to the Kindle. The software has been the same for a number of years, its like you're not interested anymore!

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony Reader PRS-505

  1. Does this e-reader support ebooks from many sources? Would it allow me to shop around? Does it support amazon ebooks? And does it support library books?

Also, what makes this e-reader different from the Sony PSR650 and PSR350? I'm trying to figure out which to buy.
    Jasmine asked on
    1. Jasmine
Not sure I can help very much but I'll try. I understand the PSR650 is a touch screen as opposed to button operation. I think the 350 is a pocket version. There are thousands of out of copyright books available for free as well as books which can be purchased from Amazon, W H Smith, Waterstones etc.

Not sure about the library, take a look at http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37818 This might help

      Regards

    2. It does support ebooks from other sources and to date have not had any problems downloading from varies sites. I chose the PRS505 because of its size and content, its smaller and lighter than the PRS650 but has a good memory size for books, photos and music. It has two memory cards so I keep my books separate to my music. The PRS505 is a brilliant size for slipping into a handbag or hand luggage on a plane
      Gill replied on

  2. I have lost the cd for my ebook and dont know how to put books on it that i have purchased from waterstones. can you help me please?
    lesley asked on
    1. Sorry don't know. I get all my books via Kindle now(much cheaper). I have similar problem...how to get kindle books from my I-pad onto the Reader.
      Linda replied on

  3. HI MY SONY PRS-505 IS BLOCT ON THE SCREEN IS LIKE DEVICE LOCHED

    NICOLETA asked on
    1. Try resetting the machine on the back but you'd be better buying a different device. This was one of the many reasons why I sold my reader and bought a K****e. Don't want to be seen advertising but I found the Sony a nightmare and the books are expensive.

    3. I think you have the locking mechanism wrong. Put the disc in your computer and follow thi instructions and reset to a new setting. I do not lock mine as I use it solely as a book reader. I have no trouble at all with mine. If you have not got a computer use one in the library and print of the instructions. I bought mine secondhand and use it daily, I have had it over a year now.Kindv regards, David.

  4. i am thinking of buying a second had reader from a friend not sure how old it is, only getting reader and case, should there be anything else, friend seems vague, although said i need to transfer ownership, not sure how, any ideas.
    linda asked on
    1. The reader is very good, but you should ensure that you get the connecting lead to your computer - otherwise the reader is dead. Note also that you'll need a charger for the battery - again essential
      Frank replied on

  5. I have been told by a Sony Reader owner that you can download upto 50,000 book titles onto disc from your local library.
Is this true, and if so how would I go about doing this.
I don't own one myself but I'm planning to buy one as a gift for a relative.
    Philip asked on
    1. Sorry but do not know if this is correct! I rather think not as this seems like a lot of free library books! You can certainly download many books on the basic model and a lot more if you add memory cards. All I can say is that I have owned mine for 3 years and am delighted with it!
      Dennis replied on

    2. Hi, some major libraries do have this feature, I myself belong to a Liverpool library, it is a simple matter of dowloading a software update from the Sony web page, enrole at a library where they have electronic books as well as reading books, then its just like going to the library, you can borrow books upto 3 weeks, you can request books and you can reserve books. Hope tis helps. One more thing you can now get an app to download books from Kindle through Amazon.
      Brian
      Brian replied on

    3. I'm sorry but I don't know anything about downloading from a local library. I do know you would need extra memory to hold all those book. If you get a memory card (like one for a camera) you can hold much more.
      Caitriona replied on

  6. How do you download e-books from amazon? do you need to put books on a sd card?
    Jenny asked on
    1. usually i downloaded them from amazon onto my computer and then transfered them via usb using sony's library software (supplied with the reader). sd cards are not necessary.

i've actually got a kindle now which allows you to browse ebooks on amazon and download them straight to the kindle via a wireless connection - if you can get it working. Mine took 2 months to decide to talk to my router. Nobody knows why it wouldn't to start with and nobody knows why it suddenly decided it would. So far, it continues to do so.
