Good points:
Reliable, good range of input devices all with the option of SPIDF input too, and sounds good with lots of options for manually switch between different modes e.g. Dolby/Non-Dolby, 2 channel, 3 channel, 5 channel etc
Bad points:
It seems almost pernickerty to say, but it can be a little slow to start-up sometimes (5-10 seconds), however this may part of the Sony intelligent communication to determine which device has just been turned-on.

Good points:
As long as you read the manual, the setting up of the speakers is easy, although there are caveats (see bad points). I like the feature of setting the speaker output to the tv and a separate output for the tuner etc.so you don't have to reset when switching. The sound can be very powerful, especially the woofer. The centre speaker gives a clear dialogue, and sits unobtrusively on the tv stand. .
Bad points:
The unit can be difficult to set up due to the display, even on its brightest, being hard to see. Also the setting up options via the buttons are not user friendly. The main L and R speakers are not quite matched to the powerful woofer which can overwhelm the listening. . I have changed the main L and R speakers as I only use these ,with the woofer, for radio listening.

Good points:
Only needed system with speakers & receiver only, not one with built-in DVD/Blu-Ray.
Easy set-up,using auto method, took approx 15-20 mins.
Stylish, 3 HDMI ports, sync's well with stand alone DVD/Blu-Ray player.
Sound quality excellent
Bad points:
Can't think of any - only tuned to 1 radio station at the moment, bought more for the surround sound aspects of product , as i'm not one for the radio.

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Excellent sound for everyday TV compared to standard TV speakers. When you crank it up for films or music from other sources good sound quality is still there. Auto set up is easy with supplied mic. and standard settings are fine. Able to use headphones through TV outlet and mute surround speakers at amp. (TV same make as HT-SS100).
Bad points:
None really. No headphone socket on unit but still able to use them

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony HT-SS1000

  1. What is the price of this system
    Gandhimathy asked on
    1. Price when purchased was £399. I bought when on special offer at Argos, approx £269?
Might be discontinued line now though!
      Matt replied on

  2. When playing the volume does not seem to function correctly. I do like to play music loud but even normal volume for TV etc shows 48 on the display. What should be showing in the display panel at a normal listening volume. A friend of mine has a sony surround system and when the display shows 8-10 the sound is more that sufficient. Your comments would be appreciated.

    Keith asked on
    1. 48 on the display! Mine only goes upto 40.
What other components are connected upto the system?
All I can suggest is to check that all components are connected up securely & correctly.
When listening to TV my volume is between 12-15,(mind you i'm bit deaf).
      Are you using HDMI cables?
      Carry out 'Auto calibration' again.
Have you still got the instruction manual?

      Matt replied on

  3. Is is possible to continue to use the surround sound system without having the TV turned on. Say for instance, I'm listening to the radio on Sky and I have the TV turned off to stop the blue backgrounds sticking to the TV screen.
    Robert asked on
    1. Yes, just turn the TV off, and press 'tuner' button on the remote!
      Matt replied on
