David, Home cinema enthusiast

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Great sound from tiny speakers. Generally does a good job of working with equipment from different manufacturers.
Bad points:
HDMI pass-through from a 3D Blu-ray to a 3D TV doesn't register as a 3D-compatible so will only play in 2D. This means a direct HDMI connection to the TV is needed, and this means complexity in having to change the input on the TV as well as the HT-IS100. This, as well as Sky's appalling omission of Dolby sound on its HDMI output means that I needed a fancy multi-remote control (Harmony One in my case) to avoid having to deal with multiple remotes.

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony HT-IS100

  1. What equipment do I need to connect to my HT-IS100 to go wireless?
    Eric asked on
    1. Sony SMP-N100 wireless adaptor makes the rear surround speakers wireless.
      Bob replied on

  2. I stream movies to my bravia tv through an ethernet cable fitted direct to my tv, would the sound for these movies work through this surround sound system, thanks
    paul asked on
    1. If the TV is connected to the Sony with an HDMI cable, you certainly get sound. What I'm not sure is whether it would only be stereo or full Dolby. Suggest you download the instruction manual and check
      David replied on

    2. I would imagine that you would get full surround sound as the audio information is part of the data stream you get through the ethernet cable. I get full surround sound from my media player when I watch .mkv files and that must be similar.
      Bob replied on

  3. Hi I am just wondering if the HT-IS100 can be used with speakers from another Sony DAV DZ660 cinema system?

    Many thanks
    Daniel
    Daniel asked on
    1. The power output of the HT-IS100's amp is 450 W (50W per channel). The DZ660 speakers handle 142W. It will work but the amp might have to work hard. Why do you even want that set-up?
      Bob replied on

  4. Hi sorry I have another question and that is does the HT-IS100 output all the best audio like HD, loseless and 3D?

    Thanks
    Daniel
    Daniel asked on
    1. No, only if your Blu Ray player can decode it.
      Bob replied on

  5. Hi Bob many thanks for answering my question basically the reason being is the fact that I don't use the dvd player that came with the 660 instead I use my PS3 so the dvd player is a waste, I would like my tv and PS3 connected by HDMI to the amp and to be able to get the high end audio like HD which I understand the PS3 would decode and send to the amp/speakers. I would downgrade from 850w bass to 450w bass in favour of the HT- IS100's connections do you think its worth it in your opinion or should I just stick with what I currently have?

    Thanks
    Dan
    Daniel asked on
    1. I had a look at some of the reviews from customers who bought your system from Amazon and they seem thrilled with it. If I were you, I'd stick with what you have, I don't think you would gain a hell of a lot if you bought the HT-IS100.
      Bob replied on

  6. Also the reason why I have to keep the DZ660 speakers is due to the fact they are mounted on my walls and all the wiring is hidden behind the wall etc so I just thought it would be easier to hook up the DZ660 speakers to the HT- IS100's amp because it has the same connections type as my DZ660 for the speakers. Would this be worth doing or would it be a waste of money?

    Thanks
    Dan
    Daniel asked on
    1. As I said in my last answer, save your money.
      Bob replied on

  7. Is this a wireless system... i am considering buying it and wanted to make sure
    paul asked on
    1. No

      David replied on

  8. Hi, I have the HT-IS100 and a BDP S570 Blu-Ray player and also a KDL37EX723 TV. My question is, my blu-ray decodes true HD sound, be it Dolby HD or DST HD but my surround sound I have read does not accept true HD. So I assume when I'm watching a blu-ray I'm only getting normal Dolby or DTS which is pretty good but I was wondering can I get HD sound by setting my Blu-Ray player to output through HDMI PCM and this way would I get better HD quality sound? I am happy with what I have got I just don't want to be missing out.
    Paul asked on
    1. To be honest with you, I doubt whether anybody's ears are good enough to tell the difference between surround sound formats. This system, considering its price, is pretty good but wouldn't compete against a set-up like B&W speakers with an Arcam A/V amp. I'd bet good money that even with that high-end set-up, people would find it difficult to tell the difference between the formats.
      Bob replied on

  9. thinking about buying this system . is it compatable ie will it work without issues on any brand of hd tv. i have a technika 42 lcd will the remotes all work fine, or will i have problems and have to mess around with codes etc
    carl asked on
    1. If you mean will it output the audio of your TV, then yes it will. If you mean will your remote control the Sony's functions, that will depend on whether your existing remotes have learning functions as the Logitech Harmony remotes do.
      Bob replied on

  10. Can I connect these speakers directly to my TV (SONY HDMI) or to my PS3 or to my Sky box without having to connect it to an amp? Or is an amp mandatory?
Sorry... I know its a silly question, but want to make sure.
    R asked on
    1. This is an amp as well as speakers
      David replied on

  11. I was just wondering if apple tv and Sky + HD is compatible with the Sony HT-IS100?
    Jade asked on
    1. I would imagine the Apple TV would be the same as any other media player and therefore would be compatible. Sky+ HD is different. You cannot get 5.1 audio with Sky through the HDMI cable, you need to use an optical cable connected to your Sky+ HD box and Sony subwoofer's optical input port.
      Bob replied on

  12. Is this product a replacement for the HT-AS 5.1 ch satellite soeaker surround sound system that was around last year?
    Angie asked on
    1. No, I don't think so. The HT-AS system is just another alternative Sony product. HT, as used by Sony to label their systems, just means Home Theatre.
      Bob replied on

  13. What do I use to stick the speakers to my wall please?
    Sam asked on
    1. The system comes complete with wall mounting brackets or you can buy stands for the rear speakers and mount the three fronts on the TV stand as I have.
      Bob replied on

  14. Does it allow for the 3D signal to pass through?
    Martin asked on
    1. My samsung BluRay doesn't recognise that the TV is 3D capable, so had to HDMI and use optical for sound. Other makes not so "clever" I think as signal itself does pass.
      David replied on
