Good points:
I have to remember that the HDR-XR200VE is a handy cam for taking moving picture. It does this very well, but for a difficult menu system for turning things on and off, the touch screen I would say this is a first rate camera.
Yes I use the word camera as it takes reasonable stills as well ,with a tripod good wallpaper images are very nearly possible and maybe with more time I will improve and learn new technique to over come. The 4 mega pixel imaging I quickly learned is inadaquate but good photos are possible for internet use or stills to be incuded in a film. Personaly speaking this is an expensive camera opposed to a well priced handy cam, with a little more thought by the devs a ground braking product is available.

Example: I took a very nice picture of a woman walking her dog on a "good to be alive day", I asked the woman if she minded, she said fine. So I took a very good picture on a perfect day, but the picture framing was not quite right and no amount of carfull croping will make this picture as good as it could have been due to the 4mp imaging. You have to get right first time, so take plenty of shots, there's plenty of room on the hard drive. The hard drive is a winner here, combined with the possibility of SD card as well, this department is excellent.

Another good point for the photographers out there is the swivel screen, you can take ground level shots with such ease, unusual angles are the flavour of the day with this product. All in all, I use this as a camera with the video ability secondary and it works for me. Having used SLR's most of my life, the swivel screen is a real bonus.

I did not buy this cam to because I needed a camera, I bought it because I wanted a camcorder. Trouble is it could'nt do what I bought it for, filming wild life, yes it's small enough but not versatile enough. So it gets used a camera that slips into my jacket pocket and is light enough to forget. You will need a lens hood as flare is a very real problem, a rubber lens hood combined with a 49mm skylight filter pilfered from my SLR bag and it's complete.

Bad points:
gripes: well there always are. No manual focus ring for the still camera, this is the biggest let down as close up photography is very interesting, depth of field playing such a strong part of the photographers bag, the menu driven item is useless . I did achieve some good results, but the time it takes the autofocus to ajust, good job I can laugh. The infared hand controller only works when pointed at the front of the cam, this is a design error for me, I understand there thinking here, it's neatly designed into the overall package, but it's a no no. My idea of secret filming of birds nesting has been halted, they make the cam small enough, but not versatile enough.

This is a typical Japanese product, well made, well put together and excellent quality. The let down is the gimmick driven menu screen, who needs it. There is a GPS but no manual focus for the camera, sorry but I cannot understand the reasoning here. This product is OK, a little better than an expensive toy, but I am already thinking about replacing it after 6 months use, enough said.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
The camera is light to hold, super quick to start up and shoot. I never missed a thing when using it on land or underwater and had to catch a passing sea ray or turtle or something. I did have the sport pack housing which worked superbly. The ease of finding, playback and navigation is excellent. It's simple to use as a camcorder and overall the speed and functionality is more than adequate to all of your camcorder needs. Hard-Drive - great, no changing flash cards or running out of space, it just had more and more room, so you can shoot loads footage without worring about running out of memory.
Bad points:
The standard battery has a small recording capacity so upgrading that to a N-70 solves that. The lense can be a little to long focused and for objects nearer or closer to you a wide angle lense purchase is a must. The night vision is ok, not very powerful and the GPS is sort of useful / gimmicky. It struggled to find my location in some part of the world, but handy as a extra map reference tool if you should need it. For me though these are small bad points, overall the camera is in a league of it's own compared to any others on the market.

Good points:
The "Easy" button and ant-shake are two of my favourite features followed closely by the amount of storage space that is ontained in this compact piece of equipment but then again there are so many other features as one would expect from a Sony video camera. The HDR-XR200VE is my 4th Sony video camera that I have owned since about 1988

Bad points:
No eye-piecenot always easy to view the screen in bright sunlight so I have to shoot and hope for the best (unless of course there is a featrue that deals with that, that I haven't found yet

Natural looking faces every time
Faces can look dark and underexposed in bright, backlit situations like a sun-drenched beach. And if you’re shooting indoors there’s a risk your subject’s skin tone can look unnaturally coloured. The camcorder fine-tunes focus, exposure and skin tone for more natural looking faces.

Know where you are… And were you’ve been
GPS tracks your position as you travel. See the exact location of your clips and still images with maps on the LCD screen. Then review your journey when you’re back home with online Google Maps on your PC

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony HDR-XR200V

  1. How Do I upload and play all my videos on a new MacBook Pro? It keeps telling me I dont have a compatible programme. Is there something I need to download to make it work?

    Thanks

    Mark
    Mark asked on
    1. luckily i have a mac book pro. I'm using imovies to edit the video. I've also imported all of my files onto the computer using imovies so i can quickly access them all. There are some other programs out there but i've found that imovies works well with this camcorder. So in imovies go to import and import from camera. It should produce a window that has all of your movies. The you can select all or individual files for a project. Hope this helps.
