Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony Handycam HDR-CX115
-
I am thinking seriously about buying this model with the low light feature. It will be my first camcorder. Will I be able to transfer the recordings to DVD format to playback through a DVD player?
-
Yes you will. The sofware that comes with the camcorder allows this, although I do not know about editing, you can add titles etc. However if you want to edit I do not use the software that comes with the camcorder. I had already been using Pinnacle which I find easy to use. To download to use pinnacle I found I had to plug the memory card into my PC's card reader with Pinnacle open. From the file dropdown menu select source.
The camera gives very good results.
You can record to disc in std and HD format. Some players will only accept std format so check this out.
I found it hard to come to terms with no viewfinder just the view screen when recording but as this is your first unit you should be OK. But practise first, especially if you shoot towards the sky when it is dfficult to see your object. Do not be put off, it's a great camcorder.
-
-
Hi, In REALLY SIMPLE TERMS what memory card do i need to buy to use with this camcorder. We bought this on sunday, for the imminent arrival of our little one and realise we dont have a clue. can you just buy a memory stick pro duo and thats it or do we need anything else to go with it? The book says they can only be used with memory stick pro duo media compatible equipment... isthe camcorder compatible or does it mean something else?
Sorry, I am clueless!
Kate-
Hello Kate, The camcorder is compatible with Memory stick pro duo and Secure Digital memory cards above class 4. Anything under class 4 won't be fast enough for the HD video recording. Get either card and they will work but not together. You can confirm this by looking under the camcorder. There's a compartment by the battery with SD and PRO duo. Also on page 18 of the uk manual it states what the different types of those 2 memory cards will work. I use a 16gb SDHC class 4 memory card. This gives me about 1hour 30mins of high quality footage. If you need more help, please ask. PAUL
-
-
Hi
Can you manually adjust focus during filming?
Can you shoot stop frame?
-
OK, you got me on these questions. Still getting used to basic recording. I have looked in manual and page 57 gives steps to show manual focus on screen and there is a L and R touch to alter focus, and it does work. I have not tried it during recording.
2nd. question I do not know.
-
-
Hi,
Does this camera come with a remote control?-
Hello Phil, Sorry but it doesn't include a remote control. PAUL
-
-
Hi, the PMB program provided seems to be not good enought for HD picture. Already tried different software with no success. HD picture played in computer doesnt have good quality, paticulary sharp edges getting cross lines. On the other hand picture played from camcorder straight in to LCD TV is pretty sharp. Does anybody know what could cousing it? thank u
-
Hello Peter, I don't know whether you just want to play the video or edit it. Either one you need a powerful computer. The camcorder uses HD AVCHD which is very compressed and resource hungry. If you want to edit the video. This will depend on spec of computer and make of GPU. If you want to ask more , please do. If you do please tell me what CPU, GPU make, RAM and operating system you have. PAUL
-
-
hi
does this camera have a lanc connection?
thanks any one that can advise
tony-
sorry, do not understand lanc unless you mean "local area network connection". cannot find anything in the instruction manual. best you ask someone from a sony centre store.
-
-
Hi Paul, well .. got some technical detailes for you. Hope that will hepl. windows vista 32bit, processor AMD TURION X2 (dual core RM-72, 2.1GHz), RAM 3Gb, Graphics - ATI RADEON HD 3450 (available GR memory 1533MB, dedicated video memory 256 MB), max resolution 1280x800 pixels. ths
-
Hello Peter, Thanks for the spec. You should be able to playback HD AVCHD but not at full HD.Full HD is 1920 x 1080 resolution. As for editing HD avchd, the minumum spec is AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000+. This CPU is next range up from yours. Also the ATI Radeon Hd 3450 is a slightly underpowered GPU. I not saying it won't work but it may be borderline minimum spec to edit HD AVCHD. Try to download the 30 day trial for editing software from Cyberlink. They support ATI GPU's in there software. They also have a HD advisor tool to test system. I hope this helps. If you need any more advice , please ask.

Can the CX115e record standard definition video and if so how does the quality compare with previous sd camcorders
-
Hi Alan
Yes the CX115 does record in standard definition, and I have to say the quality is outstanding. I use my camcorder for home/business use and use HD for my personal work, I use Std for video's I wish to upload to the web.
Hope this helps
Bob Simmons -
Hi Alan,
I can agree with Bob, the CX115 reocords in std def' and the quality is brill. I used to use a canon MV600i mini DV, there is no comparison.
Regards, John

Does it have a viewfinder. as lcd screens are no good to me in sunshine
-
it does not have a viewfinder and I am having great trouble in bright sunlight and when filming something in the air such as aircraft. This is something we will all have to get used to unless you can afford around a Grand for a semi prof' unit. I think the last camcorders with viewfinders were the hard disc drive units. Price we have to pay I'm afraid. I am looking at the possibility of making some kind of sheild to go over the screen but not got past the thought of stage yet. John
-
-
Hi, is it easy to move video from the camcorder to the computer and what format does it record in?
-
I find it complicated, but that is because I have lost my instruction manual - I will get back to you once I have found it!
-
Hi
Its quite easy to transfer the files - they are mpegs.
It took me a while to get used to it as I am used to working with AVI's.
I like to edit with Adobe premiere but the mpegs do no work well with this programme, so i got a copy of Sony Vegas which is quite good.
Hope this helps
Steve

How would you compare this camera to Panasonic HDC-SD60EB-S? Please help as i am totally confused which one to buy!
-
Not having used the Panasonic I cannot really comment on the differences/performance between the two. However I can categorically say that the Sony is an excellent camera with great quality and superb features. In fact the only issue I have with the camera purchase is that it did not come with storage media! This has to be taken into account when buying either cams, suffice to say I am very happy with my Sony and would recommend it to anyone.
-
I have not used the Panasonic so I can't compare. However I find that the Sony is a very compact, easy to use camera. Is very good quality and produces both excellant HD and standard films.
-
I have the same comments as Robert.
My only gripe is that there is no viewfinder but this goes for camcorders until you get into mega bucks money, Cheers, John
-
-
Whats it like in low light many thanks
-
I have found it to be quite good with the backlight facility
-
I have also found it quite good

-
I have a HD tv but not a SD video recorder. If I record in HD, will I still be able to record a DVD and play back on the standard video player?
-
if you record on your camcorder in HD that's Ok. I do not use the software that came with the camcorder, I use Pinnacle which allows me to make a DVD in iether STD or HD format. As far as playback goes I do not think you can playback HD in std players, or at least that is what I have found. Hope this helps

-
I currently use a Sony Mini dv camcorder which I edit through Pinnacle Studio 10, and finalise and burn using Nero. I have become very disappointed with the results now that we have replaced our CRT tv with a 32 inch HD LCD tv 1080p. There is movement around the edges of static objects and the crispness has gone.
Comments above indicate that Pinnacle will work. However will I now need to use HD DVD blank discs to burn on, or can I still use ordinary DVD discs without any loss of reproduction?
I would like a camera that will allow me to continue to use the current editing and burning facility and rid the film of the negative issues identified above.
My computer has:
Vista 32 bit
The display adapter is a Radeon X1300 / X1550 Series
The processor is Intel(R) Core (TM)2 CPU 6300 at 1.86 GHz
Has 2gb of RAM
Is there anything else I need to consider before I can accept that what I record will be reproduced to an HD standard on the TV. My DVD player is a Blu Ray that plays non Blue Ray discs.
Many thanks in anticipation
Colin-
your computer seems much as mine. I use Pinnacle Studio Plus V11. and can make discs in both STD and HD format. I get good results and play back on a samsung 23" hd TV, picture quality is good, not noticed any edge deformation. I can recomend the Sony HDR-CX115E. Hope this helps
-
-
Can this camera take other lens? is it threaded and what size lens fit on it?
-
Yes this camera has a thread and takes a variety of lens'. When I bought my camera there was an acesories booklet which lists all options but does not give the lens size. Possibly you could get this info off the sony web shop. I have not bought a lens yet.
-
-
This camara has flash included? If the answer is yes, how I can find it?
-
where did you get that info. I cannot see in the handbook any reference to flash, and I cannot see anything in the camera menus. In the accessories booklet there is lamp attachment available for video use but thats all. hope this helps
-
-
I was going to buy a sd58 but then just saw the hd115 model...which would you recommend ?i am rather worried about the lack of a recording medium and the recurring cost...would i also need a hard disc of some sort for permanent storage? with the vat back there is no significant cost difference so i just need to understand the specs...
-
your choice really. the sd58 has a hard disc + sd cards and records in std def. the hd115 only has sd card format but records in high def 1080p. the 58 has better optical zoom. the 115 is smaller and lighter. I am happy with my choice of the 115. I always process my video to my PC and make a disc copy, that way I can delete from the sd card to use again.
hope this is helpful

-
I'm thinking about the Sony HDRCX115 for videos shot a night (eg. in street-lit scenes), but can see from the product specs that there is no night "mode", as you see on other camcorders. The Tesco site says it has a night mode, so I'm not sure what to think. Also, I need to know if I can alter the zoom DURING recording...
-
It does have some limitations when shooting at night,
although it does have a fairly good low lux. there is a video light available as an accessory and I guess you would need this in poor light to get good results. When reocrding yes you can zoom in and out but be careful not to be to quick as you can loose focus particularly if panning at the same time. I like the unit as a whole, my main video is scenes or filming my wife hacking out on her horse
hope this helps

-
i bought this camera (sony Cx115) yesterday bt i find a problem ....when i record any clip nd play it works very fine on camera screen bt wen i connect it to ma laptop nd try to play on ma laptop screen it doesnt play clear on laptops screen ....vedio comes out to be blurred though dis camcorder is high definition nd vedio keeps freezing on..... my laptop is not HD compatible its a simple laptop wid core2duo processor cud that be a problem.........regards
-
I redord all my video in HD format and play the resulting files on my desktop computer, also with a core2duo processor. I can play it also on a laptop running only a celeron without problem. It would appear to me that maybe your graphics are not up to showing HD video very well. You can try however to record in standard definition and see how it performs then, also it's worth trying another computer if you have access to one.
-
-
Is it possible to insert a standard USB Memory Stick and record a video in that?
-
No. you have to use SD memory card. There is a USB
port but it is output only
hope this helps
-
-
how do i get my camcorder to record to hard disc. when i press record it says no sd card
-
there is no hard disc. you have to use SD card. I would have thought you realised that before purchase
-
There is no hard disc with this model
-
-
I have just bought sony Cx115. Please can you tell me what is on the CD disk before I upload it to my computer.
-
Just some software for sorting photos and movies, I don't use it but it dosn't do any harm.
-
-
Where do i find the serial no on my new hdr-cx115e.
many thanks mat-
Hi Mat,
The serial number can be found on the bottom of the camcorder. It's a 7-digit number on the right of the Sony label.
-
-
how can i make a dvd from this cam to play on my dvd?
-
use the software that is supplied with the cam, assuming you have a powerful PC
-
i'm not sure, and keep meaning to read up on it!
-
-
i would like to know - when filming with this camera, does this make a noise?
why i ask is, i had to send a canon one back as it had a strange purrrr noise (it was the motor) and was very irritating especially when filming a quiet piece of footage. very noticeable...very dissapointing.
i should have got the handycam originally- which i am going to do so, once i get my refund!
but yes, please can you let me know- is it a silnet camera.. i mean you can allow for zoom/in / out sounds etc but the canon was PURRRRR it was NOT good!!!! very bad!
please let me know how the sony handycam sounds
lastly, does this take SDHC cards. i have a 16gb one all ready for a camera once i can get one that is good!
im hoping to get the red sony handycam. good price - under £400 and so far have read great reviews on it.
please email me back
Caroline-
This camera is silent, completely! there is no noise whether zooming in or out. I use the Sony memory stick pro although you can use if you prefer a SDHC card.
-
Hi Caroline
I have not noticed any noise at all with mine.
Yes, they take sdhc cards - I think up to 64 meg.
I saw the camera the other day in Currys for £289.
Good luck
Steve -
No noise! I have never had a problem with mine whatsoever. I saw this model camcorder in Curry's last week for £246 after the £30 cashback. Prices are dropping all the time. Yes, it's definately a lovely little camcorder and I would recommend it to anyone. Good luck
-
-
Hello there, does the camera come with its charger included in the price?
-
Yes the charger is included.
-
yes the charger is included. Have you not read anything about whats included in the box. You ought to do some more research before asking silly questions and wasting my time
-
-
Any iMac users there?I cannot get a good quality video it seems very grainy and fuzzy the minute I transfer it on the iMac and low light gets pretty nasty on an 27" screen.
Going mad is it possible it works worse with this type of a computer?-
Sorry - can't help with this one! I am a committed PC user!

Hi there, I bought my CX115 back in June 2010. For a while I had been using my sons 4GB Pro Duo memory card from his PSP.I decided to invest in a 16GB SDHC 6 and a 16GB Pro Duo memory card.Since using both of these cards I have had no end of problems of either keeping what I have videoed or photographed. With the SDHC card I don't receive any error messages, it appears to be recording or taking photos O.K. When I play back either the video has not recorded or it only records for a short while, then it decides to stop. With the 16GB Pro Duo I get a message on the screen stating 'This memory card may not record or play images correctly'. Thinking I may have purchased faulty cards I bought another 16GB Pro Duo card, still getting the same message. All the cards I bought were formatted in the camera before use, and yet my sons 4GB is the only card that works in the camera O.K. Any help would be gratefully received, thank you
-
The cards are graded 1 - 10 I think and it will affect the performance. It seems the more u pay the better. I paid £80 for a 32gig and have had no trouble.
-
I'm sorry I can't answer your question very well as I have only ever used a 4gb card and without any problems whatsoever. Perhaps it's the best size to use for this little camcorder.
-
I use a Sony - Flash memory card - 16 GB - Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and have had absolutely no problems what so ever, I also use a 4gb Sony memory stick Pro duo and the end results are not as good as the aforementioned stick but still works well.

How good is the picture from this camcorder under artificial light indoors? I returned a Panasonic because it came out extremely grainy, even though we have 5 bulbs in the ceiling light and 3 in the wall lights (all 40-watt equivalent low-energy bulbs, but surely that should be good enough to only have minimal grain on a good quality camcorder even without a video light accessory).
-
Its actually pretty good, there is still some grain but not too bad. The single large ccd idea is much better for low light. Panasonics tend to use 3 small ones which are great in daylight but a little more limited in low light. I think this camera is the best overall performer at this price range.
-
I can only speak from experience from using my camcorder in doors and I find the reproduction quite good. Are you sure you've got it on artificial light setting although I don't always put mine to that setting and so far have not a lot of difference. I am just a user too but can I ask you how you find the reproduction on the computer?
-
Picture is excellent. Colours very good under several forms of artificial light - low light capability is awsome! Same is true of "artificial" light circumstances out-doors - I "put it to the test" with our Christmas street lights last December - results stunning!
-
-
does this cam have night vision??
-
Not as such, but it does shoot video in very low light conditions. These vary on the circumstance you are shooting in, so I nearly always shoot a little video to test the results before using the cam to take my required pictures.
-
not that i am aware of
-
-
hi i just bougth this video camera today as a present to my daughter. My question is can she edit the videos and copy to a DVD disc using an old toshiba laptop windows xp model 2007.thank you
-
Goodness me, I don't know. I'm afraid I don't actually do anything like this. I take video and load it onto my Sony laptop with no problems. I am going on a video-editing course in April - I could probably help you after that.
Sorry. -
Its not so much the lap top but more the software that you use to edit the footage with.
I have used Sony Vegas editing suite which a cheap piece of software, but is quite good for making short films and putting them on dvd easily.

Do i need to have a empty Blueray dvd to burn video on, i want to get the best quality 1080p footage on my HD plasma
or do i use a stadard dvd RW an it still plays in 1080p HD on my hd plasma?
thanks-
I find that standard record reproduces quite well for me. but me tv is only 32 inch, I would try standard first if it is not good enough for you then try blueray, hope this is of help.
-
-
Do i need to have a empty Blueray dvd to burn video on, i want to get the best quality 1080p footage on my HD plasma

Hi
You can't play HD from an ordinary dvd - it will work but not in proper HD.
You do need blue ray (and a blue ray burner) to do this.
Steve -
Yes, for HD you do need to use a blueray disk and burnesr I'm afraid.
-
-
any feedback on recording and then pausing, does it just resume the footage or start something brand new.some reviews state it starts a brand new file each time you pause and then resume which seems strange to me if to get 1 film you have many different files.hope ive explained this sort of ok.
-
Although I have never yet used this facility, it is my understanding that pausing is just temporarily halting your current video clip, with the view to resume momments later. A new file would begin after pressing the stop button. That would be complete and final. Hope I have been of some help at least. It wouldn't be a disaster if it did stop when pressing halt, because I found that when I run my video clips on TV, they all run into each other in the order that they were filmed, without gaps.
-
-
i am having this model and using 4 GB card but i want to know that how much maxmimum GB card it can support . so i can use it for long recording. and also can use it for only audio recording.
Kiran Patel-
my understanding it will support a 32 gig card, although i use 2x16 gig cards that way if anything goes wrong i dont lose too much, hope this is of some help
-
-
I've just become the owner of a Sony CX115 and wanted to know which Sony Vegus software suite would you recommend for a complete beginner to use?
-
I don't personally use Sony software to process Hi Def video. I use Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. For a beginner it would be easier to use Pinnacle as Premier, whilst an excellent programme is for more advanced users.
-
I have purchased the Sony Vegas software suite, but have yet to use it. I plan to go on a video editing course in April, and hope that I will be able to get the most of the software after then. Sorry I can't help you further.
-
-
is it easy to use it with a a mac, i usually do on camera editing so are the videos being saved as a what format ? also is that format with final cut and can i play the videos in hd with vlc media player or quicktime ?
-
I use it with an imac and its fine. I use imovie 09 which of course comes with the mac and have never had any problem. The files import really quickly which I was very surprised by and you can then export them to just about any format you want. Never used final cut so have no info for you on that. I'm really impressed by this little camera, also the low light recording is awesome. Check some of my videos at youtube.com/robertcorbett.
-
I only use PMB editing, and the format saved for HD is AVCHD and can be played on DVD players, As I understand playback via tv or a portable media player is only in std not hd, i use quicktime for saved images,
-
-
Does this work with An Mac computer
-
I don't know as I only have a PC/laptop. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. However, knowing Sony I'm sure that they have allowed for the camcorder to be used on both systems.
-
-
How good is the internal mic audio quality? I understand many camcorders' audio quality with a built-in mic is poor. Is there a socket for fitting an external mic to, to assist with better audio quality?
Further, can video footage be edited easily by using Windows Movie Maker and then uploaded to e.g. YouTube? Does this camcorder therefore record in a format suitable for uploading to YouTube?-
Audio ok but dont use you tube so cant help
-
Sound quality is pretty good but there is no input for external mike. (I use a seperate recorder)
You can edit with most programmes - I use Sony Vegas which gives you the option to upload straight to youtube. Moviemaker will work but in my opinion it is very basic.
-
-
I'm trying to decide whether to buy the CX115 HD or the DCR-SR58 or is there a better alternative?
In the past I've always had great results making home movies with my Canon MV200 mini DV using Windows Movie Maker and Nero to burn onto DVD's. When it recently gave up I thought my next buy would be a HD camcorder but I'm concerned about the size of the files and whether my PC with an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.66GHz, 256 RAM, 512 MB and XP operating system can cope. My PC is 7 years old and I've recently bought an external hard drive and moved some stuff off the PC as it can run slow and I get the message 'virtual memory low' come up.
I would add that I do like to make quality videos of our annual holidays so usage is generally low but tends to be high (6 hours over 2 weeks) when on holiday.I would like to keep using Windows Movie Maker as I'm familiar with this but are the file formats for the two camcorders compatible and what do you think would be the best all round buy for me?
-
Hy I can not answer your query, I have a CX115e and i find it very good for what i use it for, recording steam engines, and birds with my birding scope, I donot use windows movie maker. Regards brian
-
Hello Richard,
I have only ever owned Sony Camcorders so I cannot vouch for the other models. I have always found Sony to be very easy to use, easily understood instructions and fantastic videos/photos. However, I don't know if your PC would cope with mp4 video footage and I know that this would take up so much room on your hard drive and make your PC run extremely slowly. Sorry I cannot be of more help regarding your choice of models. I am extremely happy with my camcorder.
-
-
Thanks Brian & Irene for your advices.
Just wondered if there is anyone else out there who can tell me if the Sony HDR-CX115 camcorder video file format is compatible with Windows Movie Maker. I believe it has standard definition as well as HD so presumably it's possible to use Windows Movie Maker? or convert the video file into something that is compatible? Hoping that someone out there has some experience in this field.-
Yes it is. I use the PMB software that SONY supplied with the camera to download the files via USB from the CX115 and do a basic edit on these files from PMB (chop out the wiggly bits at the front and the wife swearing at the end etc). I then go into WLMM to build up a "movie". It is a super piece of software for the amateur and allows you to put titles and captions into your movies and also include still photos with the piece. The only drawback is if you want to obliterate the "as taken" soundtrack and just have one that you superimpose yourself. WINDOWS website has a method for doing this. Its a super camear for the price and WLMM is great!
-
Hi
Standard files work fine with moviemaker but not HD.
However I never use moviemaker because it is not a good programme and there are much better ones available. I find Sony vegas works very well with HD and standard.
Steve

What is the best software and recording device to save my HD recording to keep the high quality that I have recorded as I dont want to lose it. So I can clear my SD card .

That shouldn't be a problem saving a good quality HD video clip. You won't lose it, but having said that, I have a Sony HD laptop, but I do save my video clips on discs which are just general use. I haven't noticed a drop in the quality of these clips after saving them on disc. Perhaps you could save them on a Blue Ray disc on your computer?
-
using a blue ray disc is the only way

i recently brought the Sony Handycam HDR-Cx115 and its been brilliant so far, but the problem im having with it at the moment is the fact that when i connect my camera to my computer, it asks where i want to save my video clips, i then choose 'My Documents' and the files all go to their with no problem, but for some reason my computer is not letting my view the videos as it says the file is not right. I have heard of files such as AVI. Mp4 ETC. but this file is unusual, it dosent allow me to edit in windows live movie maker. and also there is no picture on the video files, so they are all just blank for some reason. I really need some good advice, this is the second product i have purchased from sony, the other was the bloggie and that was a horrible camera for me. i make videos on youtube so i need to be editing, but im not having any luck at the moment. i did download PMB, which does allow me to view my videos and everything, but when they all go to my documents it doesent work. Please Help Me!! thank you
-
Hmmm! I insatlled PMB from the Sony disc. I open the LCD screen and plug in the USB to the CX115. It then asks if I want to establish a USB connection so I press this box on the screen. The screen goes blank, the computer establishes the contact and then I get the inevitable boxes opening. I select the PMB one that says download files. It never asks where I want to save it but always saves them in Videos under Libraries (I am Windows7). It will download only the ones that I have not previously downloaded and it will create a date folder in which to place them. I use PMB to do basic editting - take the shaky bit off the front, take the wife's swearing off the back when she discovers she has been verbally abusing the person I am producing the video for etc etc. I leave PMB open and start Windows Live Movie Maker and paste in my videos as WLMM looks by default in the Videos folder. If I want to, say, add a still photo which I store in a seperate folder under "C/" then I can select a different folder and do so. That's all I have done from new. Having explores a little bit, SONY do save the main file and one or two additional ones with the same name and different extensions. You may be falling foul of these lesser files not being saved?
I have just followed the above and have not had a problem. Sorry I can't be more specific!

Hey, i have just brought the sony handycam HDR-CX115, and im having problems with it at the moment. I normally edit my videos but the trouble is on the camera you can switch to 'HD QUALITY' or 'STD HIGH QUALITY', switching to HD quality, dosent work for me as the file for it is M2TS File (.m2ts) which is not compatible with ANYTHING!, i cant edit in windows movie maker, i cant open in any media players, but yet the quality looks amazing, whereas when i film in 'STD quality', the quality looks a bit bad (but still good) but i can edit with that as the file is (mpj.)and that allows me to edit in windows etc. then i normally save that video and publish it in (HD 1080P) and seems to look fine on youtube. so my question to you is..why is this happening? am i doing this right? please answer back with a better answer than last time as i didnt understand what that person wrote. Thank you
-
Movie maker will not work with HD - you need another editing programme, I would suggest Sony Vegas if you're a beginer. Its a good programme and works well with mpegs HD

hi this camcorder dosent have light has it?
-
No but it has a fantastic low light setting
-
There is no light on this camcorder, but to be honest the low light setting are so good it really doesn't need one. In addition, any light would be an unnecessary drain on battery life.
-
This camcorder does not have a flash (if that's what you mean), but it takes fantastic video at night time.
I recently attended a football match which started at dusk. The video was amazing, and you was able to see the players very clearly.
The Panasonic equivalent (60) has a flash.

I HAVE AN INQUIRY ABOUT Sony Handycam HDR-CX115 ABOUT HOW MANY HOURS YOU CAN VIDEOING.
-
It depends on the size of you memory card. 32 gig will give you about 8 hours
-
-
is this a sutible camcorder for creating movies i.e action movies.also can you get a tripod for it?
-
yes no problem my tripod was under £30 from Jessops.
-
-
is this ok for making movies i am doing media studies and is all i can afford
-
The reason I bought this camera was to make movies of holidays special events etc. The camera does have its own built in editing functions. Although, I haven't used them. I simply wanted a quality point and shoot camera with good optical useable zoom. I use imovie on my Imac to edit and cut my films. I did try the non HD camera but was very disappointed in the results, but since changing to the HD version I have been delighted.
-
I have been taking snippets of movies since buying it last year, and by using Windows Movie Maker, I am able to put all the clips together into an enjoyable, watchable movie. This camera is amazing and probably one of the best ones I have ever owned. Definately good value for money.
-
-
is this ok for making movies i am taking media studies and is all i can afford.
-
This camcorder is absolutely fine for movies as the quality of the HD footage is excellent. I have one small criticsm however, this seems to apply to all cameras/camcorders without an optical viewfinder. In bright light conditions outdoors, the LCD viewfinder is very difficult to view and makes focusing on the subject difficult sometimes.
-
I totally agree! The wife has a compact digital still camera and that suffers from the same problem. I also have a SONY DSLR and so I can use the viewfinder rather than the LCD screen and I also have a CANON compact digital still camera which was one of the last ones made wuith a viewfinder as well as a screen. I find it hard to "frame" the shots on my SONY CX115 in bright sunlight and so try an take shots where I am in shadow - a bit limiting. All manufacturers seem to be the same nowadays - it's called progress! I have no suggestion other than petitions to Westminster or your MP?
-
-
What is the file type of the clips. i.e. MOV or MPEG?
-
Mpeg4

mpeg-4

Hi there,
I wondered if someone could tell me how easy it is to do a direct transfer from the Sony camera to TV/DVD? without the use of a computer. I am getting married and thinking of purchasing this for recording my wedding. I would be looking for it to hook up to the TV to transfer straight to DVD disk. Any help appreciated.-
hi
you can view all your recorded video on TV, but you need a separate setup to burn DVD like DVD burner which in my experience has lot of hassles. the best idea would be transfering the content to external hard disk for which sony sells a special usb cable wherein you can directly pump all data to the ext hard drive.
cheers

Hi, i wondered if someone could assist me. I have never owned a camcorder before however since the birth of our son who is 4 months old we thought it would be a good time to invest. I saw this model in Currys the other day and was impressed by the picture when recording so have been looking at this model and reviews seem to be good. This is going to sound really stupid but, if i buy a memory stick, ive read that i can record up to 2 hours on this, does this mean the memory stick will only hold 2 hours of video then i have to upload onto my computer and re-record over the memory stick when i next want to record? If so what happens when i take the camcorder on holiday, each day if i record for 2 hours does that mean every night i have to upload onto a computer and onto disc before i can use the memory card to record over it again? I thought these memory cards these days can store loads? Im confused i hope that makes sense? Also again im not great with Laptops, is it easy to upload onto laptop and put onto disc? Any advice for me and help is welcomed. Thank you.
-
Hi - Congratulations on your son.
I bought a Sony HDR-CX115 only two months ago so have not used it much yet, but it is my fourth Sony camcorder since 1987 and the HD picture quality is very good. 2 hours of video is a long time! I bought 3 memory cards – they are quite cheap on the web – and my intention is to download them through me laptop to an external 1TB hard drive and then reuse them. A programme is supplied with the camera.
The biggest drawback I have found with the camera is the lack of a viewfinder. I find the screen difficult to see outside if it is bright. It makes filming more distant objects very hit & miss but, if you only wish to film your son, it should give excellent results. Good luck.
-
i would agree that there is a lot of video in 2 hours, but as said before you should buy a couple of memory sticks and then put on your computer at your convenience plus back them up onto a seperate hard drive as with photo's etc. you could on holiday bring your memory card to a photo shop and they will be able to put it onto a dvd so you could write over your memory stick again if you wanted to do it that way.
if you thiunk of it the memory sticks are probably as cheap as it was to buy tapes when i first had a camcorder so buy a few.
it is fairly easy to upload onto your pc as it will be recognised by most programs and will do most of the work for you. there is also a button on this that allows you to put it onto a dvd directly but i have not used this feature. all round this is a great camera and if you think about it for children you will be recording a lot indoors and this is one of the best cameras for indoor recording i have seen. -
Your assumptions are correct. When the memory stick is full you must either copy the contents to a PC or make a DVD copy. The previous answer is correct 2hours is a very long time. In practice and of more concern is battery power. You should consider an extra battery. It is most annoying if the battery runs out. I have been taking videos since my son was 4 - he is now 30. You will find that you will want to edit your footage eventually. This is a whole new ballgame and I suspect the software in the package is quite basic. I now edit on a MacBook pro. It takes more time than the original filming!
Good luck

I have never purchased or used a camcorder before but since the birth of my first child i thought i would invest in one! This model looks good to me, however how easy is it to transfer videos onto your computer and onto disc? What do i need to buy to enable me to biew my videos back on my TV or does something come with this product to allow me to do this? How long does a full battery last for? Also i understand there is no memory built into this camcorder and i need buy a memory stick, which one is the best one to buy for this camcorder to allow me to record the max. Also how many hours can i record onto a memory stick before i have to put it onto disc and wipe the memory card and record over it again? Look forward to hearing from someone to offer me some help!x
-
Hi Claudia
I'll try and answer some of your questions!
You can view the video directly on tv by connecting it via a cable. If you want it in high definition you will have to buy an hdmi lead which is expensive in the shops but cheap on ebay - I got one for about £4.
You will need a memory card (not a stick) and the one I use is a 32 gig one which was quite expensive but will hold many hours of video depending on the settings that you record at. Smaller cards will obviously hold prortionately less. The battery is pretty good and lasts 3 hours ish.
Ideally you will need software to edit the movies and this is an art in itself but not insurmountable. Sony Vegas is quite cheap and is user friendly.
I have been very pleased with my Sony camcorder and did a lot of research before I purchased. The picture quality is excellent.
Hope this helps

Hey
I was thinking about buying this camera for my Youtube videos. How is the video quality on it? thats all i want to now really since thats all i will be really using it for.-
Video quality is great, there are loads of skydive videographers using cx110s and 115s and posting to YouTube... having said that, if YouTube is your only medium (ie., you're not making DVDs for customers to take home), you might also think about some of the lightweight, small-format sports cams like the GoPro and Drift? They are popular and with good reason.
-
Hi Andrew. I don't think you could do better, especially at the prices asked for this model. I was astounded at the 1080 quality through my Sony Bravia television. if you want to make AVCHD disks, the software supplied (PMB) is unsophisticated, but it works well. Altogether amazing!
-
The picture quality is fantastic. I would definately recommend it.

Hi
I'm sorry but I'm a total novice when it comes to specification explanations. Can anyone tell me what it means when in the product description is says "16gb internal memory" As I see that you need a memory card with this. I assumed it perhaps meant it had internal memory so no memory card was neceeary. Novice like I say
Thanks
Lynne-
It has an internal hard disk containing memory, but I believe you still also need a memory card - I too am a total novice!
-
Where did you get this information? There is no internal recording memory in this camera, it requires a flash memory device such as an SD card. If you saw the information on the Sony website then it is an error, if you saw it on a website other than on the official Sony website, ie a dealer site, then the information cannot be trusted in the first place as the internet is riddled with flawed information about technical specifications such as this. I can't see anywhere in the product description on the Sony site to say it has any kind of internal memory at all. Are you sure you havent confused it with the CX155?
-
-
I have owned the CX115 for almost one yr and have only used occasionally. Rcently I get a 'data error' message after a period of recording - could be few minutes to under minute of recording. I thought this was a SDHC card issue so bought a new card but the problem persists. I'm using SDHC Class 4 16Gb cards and as said had no issue until recently. Has anyone seen this before? My warranty up in 3 weeks so want to decide what to do.
-
I have not seen this error before. I suggest you return the camera asap for repair. I use my camera every day and have had no problems.
-
I have never had this error message Philip, but if it's a hardware problem, maybe Sony can throw some light on it. The card sounds ample enough memory. I think Sony is your best bet before your warranty runs out.

-
hii i would like to know how long the battry would last and what is the best thuing about the camera in your opinion??
-
Hi,
Only just bought this camera so not a 100% sure about how long the battery would last but we have only charged it once since buying it a few weeks ago. I think the standard battery will last around 5 hours of recording time at standard high def recording. Dont have a best thing but very happy with what we bought. It only cost £250 for the camera and we thought that was a bargain. -
Hello I think the battery time depends on using hd or not but certainly the battery life would be a minimum 5-6 hours, the best thing about the camera is the zoom and simplicity of use.
-
-
Hi, I am contemplating about getting this camera, but the reviews are holding me back and make me think that this camcorder could be a little flimsy!
Also, does it come with a handle/strap, and is that flimsy?-
No I have not found it flimsy. I have in fact dropped it from waist hight onto tarmac and it still works (I will try not to make a habit of it though!). It comes with a strap through which you put your right hand if you want to film with the camera at eye level which, like all modern camcorders, is not very practical as there is no viewfinder just a screen. I tend to operate it at waist level with the screen angled up to enable me to see it. I can then support my right arm on my waist thus steadying the camera which I am holding in the palm of my right hand with my left hand holding the screen. Instead of operating it with the "mechanical" button designed to be under your right thumb if operated at eye-level, I use the "electronic" button on the bottom left of the screen. This works well. I don't have a neck strap for the camera but have attached a wrist strap to the hand strap attachment points so I have this around my right wrist as a safety precaution in case I drop it (again!). I like this camera it does all I want it to do it's HD and will give acceptable DVDs via Windows7 Movie Maker for distribution to friends & family. It seems well put together. Go for it!
-
Mine came with a hand strap but to be honest I don't use it I find it gets in the way because your hand becomes less flexible, I like to use my camcorder at different hights (i.e overhead shots looking down or waist shots looking up) but I do like the idea of using a wrist strap just incase it;s dropped or knocked out of your hand. As to it looking flimsy I can see what you mean but no it's not flimsy just very very light weight and compact I carry mine around in my pocket. Up until I brought this (Sony) I had a DV camcorder which is about 5 times bigger, 10 times heavier and very awkward when carrying it because you had to put it down before you could do any thing with both hands making it easier to rob or loose, with the sony I just put it in my pocket.
The hinge on the screen is robust and you can feel that when you open and close it.
I have to admit I had a few doubts before I brought mine, Flimsy looking, picture quality and the use of a SD card but I can honestly say hand on heart It's not flimsy just very light weight and compact,The picture quality is second to none and the SD card is simplicity it's self.
-
-
Does this camcorder have a place to attach a tripod as I use one a lot?
-
Yes indeed, in the base of the handycam
Enjoy
-
-
Is it compatable with iMac? Does --Movie work with it?
-
I don't know much about iMacs, but as the Handicam records each scene on an SDHC card, which I'm sure a Mac can read into iMovie, I don't think you'd have any problems with it. The Handicam creates a standard form of video file.
-
-
I'm thinking of buying this camcorder but I'm also torn between the Sony DSC-WX7 16.2 pixel and the PANASONIC TZ20 14.9 pixel, both are digital camera's with full HD movie, if I get the Sony camcorder what are the still shots like compared to a still camera. would it be better getting a camcorder that can take pics or a camera that can take HD video ?
-
Hi Gary, in my opinion a camera shoots pictures better and lacks in shooting video. A camcorder shoots video better and lacks in shooting pictures. Of course this depends on the money you'll spend. In my case, I bought the cx115 at a very reasonable price (430 euro including a 16GB flash card) and I'm extremely satisfied with the video quality and satisfied with the picture quality. If shooting pictures during the day the quality is very good. During the night the quality is not good. Of course, I have a good quality camera. The CX115 picture taking comes in handy during the day for a "quick" picture. I can send you samples if you want.
-
I have a Sony camcorder just to take HD movies which is great. I find it much better to have a separate digital camera for still shots. Both will give excellent pictures on a 40 in plasma screen. Unless you are prepared to spend mega bucks - stick to two cameras. I find the Sony movie camera is great for moves and good for stills.
-
It's all down to personal preference Gary. I'd like to echo what Grahame has said. This camera is great for video, good for pictures. If you want high quality pics, buying a stills camera that's fit for the job is your best bet, but this little camera is great is you're more interested in taking excellent quality videos without forking out a ridiculous amount of money.

HI
I have bought CX115 camcorder yesterday. Quality of videos seems to be the same as SD when i record in HD mode. There is no difference between SD & HD. Video quality seems to be very poor when i view this in LAPTOP
Any help much appreciated.-
I have the CX115E HD mode camcorder as a replacement to a 9 year-old panasonic camcorder, so cannot compare it with an SD mode.
However I find that I get excellent clarity of video and photos from my sony and am very happy with everything about it. -
Haven't used it on a laptop yet but is your computer HD? If not it will only reproduce in standard quality.
Have you tried on an HD ready TV? Ours is superb viewing. Hope this helps. -
The picture Quality on my laptop is amazing from my Sony but the guys in my local camera shop went through the settings with me first i have to admit.
I would suggest a quick trip to any Sony camera shop who would be more than willing to help you on this & should get it sorted for you so you can start enjoying your camera.

Hi there.... I need to know does this camera support UHS-I SDHC Cards?
Such as:
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/sandisk-extreme-pro-uhs-i-sdhc-memory-card-32gb-10404681-pdt.html
The info only says class 4 or higher. Obviously I need class 10 for good HD but am wondering if it support the UHS-I cards like the Sandisk extreme pro 32gb for example?
Thanks :)-
Hi, Im not certain about UHS-I but certainly SDHC. I used an 8gb Fuiji card and a 16gb Remember when inserting a new card to format it. I thought I had done it and filmed a good part of my first cruise. Sadly I cannot view my holiday now. Apparently I can download some software to rescue the files. Its a great camera easy to use and has some great little extras which are not advertised.
Hope this helps

Hi everyone, i wonder if you can help me. Im looking at this camera to buy now we have our first child. I know nothing about using a camcorder and will only be using it for simple things like holidays etc. The reviews of this camera seem to be quite good so i think im going to purchase this weekend. Now as a complete idiot i dont have a clue what i need. Basically with this camera i would like to record footage and then transfer to a CD so i can keep as a DVD. Now knowing what ive just said can someone list all the things i need to buy to go with this camera (I welcome any tips on where to buy the things to go with it aswell as i know some places are more expensive than others!) Hope someone can help! Many Thanks
-
I love this camera. It's so easy to use and does the job if you're wanting to capture family events etc. and not necessarily head into film-making. I use this camera with a mac so I can play about with the footage a lot as well. I had to buy a memory card with the camera and the guy in the shop suggested a 16gb one as it would give me a fair amount of filming time before the card became full. I also bought a carrying case but you can shop around for a cheap one. Finally, it was suggested by the website I bought the camera from that I buy a spare battery but I haven't bothered; the battery life is great. Enjoy!
-
Hello . First of all im a pro video user I have many cameras but this is the camcorder that I use for recording family holidays etc, the picture sound and quality etc is amazing you will not be disappointed.
The only thing required to buy for this video camera is a memory card, SD or SDHC cards will work the video is recoreded to this rather than tape I use an 8gb one from sony which gives me over two hours of crisp HD video. You get everything you need with the camera to transfer your video to DVD. The camera comes with a connection kit that will connect it to any DVD recorder or TV. Secondly it comes with a USB connection so this camera plus straight into the computer also and is read like an external disc. Being digital once the camera is plugged into the PC you can simply take the digital HD video from it and put it on your desktop. You can simply drag the the video onto programmes such as windows dvd maker and it will burn it to disc for you.
The camera is amazing in quality for a smaller model and the only thing you need to buy with it is a memory card hope this helps you!. -
I was a professional (film)video-maker for 35 years and have been fortunate in that I was able to make videos of my children for the whole of their lives. These videos get more interesting as they get older and are amongst my most treasured posessions. This camera is the perfect tool for those recordings. Tips: Record ordinary things like play... mealtimes...reading stories... getting dressed. The sound brings it to life especially 30yrs afterwards. My advice would be to get a small tripod so you can leave the camera running and be in shot. also because there is sound it doesn't matter if your children move in and out of frame. The one criticism I would have of this camera as an ex professional is that it is almost too light to hold steadily and therefore a tripod is useful when you want nice steady pictures. If you want really good sound, keep the camera about a metre away from the source of the sound and worry about the pictures that go with it later. The software disc that comes with the camera allows you to trim clips from shots and allows you to reassemble them in any order but does not allow proper editing. PCs and Macs come with a basic edit programme but you have to convert the beautiful HD files to less good quality WMV(PC) files or (I think) .MOV files(Mac). The software included allows you to do this but I would say to Mr Sony :come on guys, it would take very little extra effort to come up with a proper basic edit package to show off the really excellent quality of this camera!

Dose it include Chinese Language ? I want to buy one for my Mum who dose not understand English.
-
I am not familiar with what the chinese language looks like so can't really help....although there are two language options which look to me like chinese or japanese i.e. symbols...perhaps the best option is to ask on the Sony website.
-
Hi my wife is Chinese and she has checked mine and yes you can change it to Chinese, but i cannot find a Chinese manual on the Sony site, so i do not know how simple this will be for your mum, but this Camcorder is the best i have ever had and would recommend this, if you go to a good camera shop like say Jessops and take a look at it and let your mother try it in the Chinese settings and see how she goes on , but if you buy i would buy on line it will be cheaper , or check on line how much then go back to Jessops they may match the price for you , hope i have helped a little for you best wishes john

Hi again i bought mine from John Lewis on line it was about nearly 100 pound cheaper hope this will help you too best wishes john

We bought ours from Marks and Spencer for 249 pounds and they give 2 years warranty!

I am interested in putrchasing this model. What are the options for downloading recorded movies in HD?
what quality can be viewed on a non-HD laptop/desktop?
IS a blue ray burner/disc needed to get HD recordings on to disc?
Can one burn to hard disk drive recorder (non-HD) ? IS a special cable required?-
the first video I recorded I did in HD which we played on HDTV via the camera and HDMI lead (purchased separately) this was absolutely superb.....next I downloaded to PC by putting the SDHC card in the slot on laptop and the option came up to download in Standard format which I did....then edited it and burnt to normal disc to play on DVD player connected to HDTV by HDMI cable this was excellent ...obviously not quite as good as direct from camera but much much better than our mini dv tape video camera ever produced!!
I understand a blue ray burner/disc IS needed to get HD recordings onto a disc to then play on a blue ray player......we have decided not to go down this route yet... The only cable we bought was the mini HDMI to HDMI that I got off the internet (making sure it was compatible to the Sony HANDYCAM. Hope this helps!!

I've heard it that whenever you pause while recording, it makes a new clip rather than keep continuing the recording from pause state. it's annoying if it's so. answer please.
-
Hi Nick, there is no pause only record on/off. But I don't see it as a problem because the supplied software can seamlessly stitch the clips together as a single film very easily. The on/off time is about 1½ seconds.

Please can you help? I'm thinking of buying the Sony HDRCX115EB High Definition Handycam Camcorder to replace a mini-DV camcorder. My PC is old, so I know I won't be able to do any editing until I update it.
My question is this:- assuming I'm able to transfer the footage from the camcorder to my external HD drive (via the creaking PC), will it retain its HD quality, so I can bring it back onto my PC when I get a new one?
Many thanks.-
HD quality will depend on your settings, ie higher quality means larger file sizes. If you have a steam powered PC its spec will limit its ability to process the recordings. Suggest until you upgrade your PC buy a decent size memory card say 16GB (about £22) which would give you about 4 hours recording at full HD quality. Transfer direct to your new PC when available.
-
Have read your reply from Michael, also you will need quite a lot of space to use PMB software so suggest the same or I have got an external drive so I dont take up too much room on my PC and slow it down
-
-
would this camcordser be any good for my school? as we need it to have good editing software and easy to use?
and is it good at taking pictures?
would you think this would be suitable?-
Dear Rosie,
I am very pleased with the movie camera. The picture quality is very good and the controls well placed and simple. I also like its compact size which is a benefit for my life style. As is often the case, the still picture quality is not as good as a dedicated digital camera. Can't comment on the editing software as I tend to use MS vista standard editing which is basic but enough for my requirements
-
-
does this camcorder has a thred to fit a fisheye lense to it ?
-
there certainly appears to be a thread to the lens although I have not used it. It measures 30mm and if you call up the model on the Sony website they sell a teleconverter lens to fit which has a 30mm thread. Wide angle attatchment has been discontinued.
-
I just have a polariser filter fitted to mine for filming through car window...helps to cut out reflections from dashboard etc...especially when it's sunny.
-
-
does this camcorder has a thred to fit a fisheye lense to it ?
-
It does have a thread, which measures 30mm in diameter, not to sure if it will fit a fisheye lens!
You will need to ask someone more professional than me.
Regards
Richard -
yes it does have threads thats why my son wanted this camera for and the fisheye is great on it.

I have purchased the CX115 and produced some absolutely fabulous video on a family holiday in Disney Florida, but have just been to mexico and although it was as good in the day, at night it was hopeless, there is no flash for the photos, and the videos in the dull restaurants I have deleted as you couldn't see anything, am I doing something wrong or is this as good as it gets?
-
Can't say really. My experience in dimly lit restaurant was pretty good.I honestly haven't used mine much in adverse conditions so far. Sorry not much help!!
-
Same here, I haven't used it in anything but good light. I'll make a point of doing some videoing in poor light and see if I get the same result. However if you go to Menu...Scene Selection..You get a choice of different conditions that you can select.
-
-
does this model have a touch screen? I am interested in buying this model but I couldn't find out from the description. I'll be thankful if someone could help me.
