Most helpful reviewsJohn, Woking Normal!
- Good points:
- The ability to put an Ipod Touch inside the unit is great. Good sound quality and the remote enables ease of operation.
- Bad points:
- Replacing the face is fiddly. The enter function on the volume control knob is not without mishap!

john, dymchurch customer service matters
- Good points:
- The head unit does what it is supposed to do and does it very well.
- Bad points:
- The unit comes with a software package called "sensme ". I cannot get the software to work with my I-pod nano and after calling Sony customer service TWICE at my expense and being promised a call back TWICE, I still have not been contacted and still cannot use the sensme function on the head unit which is very very annoying as I feel as though I have just been brushed aside by a careless corporation. This is the first time I have bought a Sony product and am thinking that it will now be the last.

- Good points:
- Lots of features and easy to set up. it has very intuitive interface. For me both the caller ID and album, track, artist search are invaluable. The Sense Me feature is witchcraft but really clever. it picks a selection of songs depending on your mood or what you are doing (night driving, going out etc)
- Bad points:
-
The jog wheel is awful, probably the worst one I have ever used. clicking select is virtually impossible without accidentally clicking Left, Right, Up or Down. It has annoyed me so much I now have to use the remote control to click select.
Both tested IPODS (5g 30gb and touch 8gb) tended to freeze requiring a soft reboot to get them working again. lots of different USB devices show up as ' no device or device error' however they work in a Kenwood system.

John, Washington, Tyne and Wear Just an average guy.
- Good points:

Using an iPod, you can have your entire audio collection available for play in your car. This is by far its best selling point, as is the fact that your iPod is out of sight.
It works very well with a thumb drive, just as good as an iPod at a fraction of the price.
Using bluetooth it links faultlessly with my iPhone 3GS.
The display is good and clear, if a little on the small side, and carries a lot of information about the track being played.
The audio stage can be tuned to the finest degree to suit just about anyone, and the sound is very good. In fact, some of the adjustments possible are quite complex. You will need to spend some time to get this right (if you're that bothered).
I was told it proved easy to install due to the fact that it was replacing an already non-standard audio unit (a Kenwood minidisc player). - Bad points:
-
It may be just me failing to get to grips with its finer points, but it does not display radio text (if I'm wrong on this, someone please tell me). It gives you the station but that's all. I'd have thought something of this standard would at least have given you programme information.
The SensMe facility is very gimmicky and can, in fact, be a nuisance until you learn how to cancel it. For me it serves no useful purpose. I don't listen to randomly chosen tracks even if they are all supposed to be in the same 'mood'.
The manual is not the best I've seen.

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony DSX-S300BTX
-
is this unit compatible with CD changers? ie does it have a cd changer input or similar? I have a 52 plate Clio 172 that has the changer built in under the seat.
-
I don't think it is compatible. It doesn't seem to have cd changer connectors, unless you can make the cd changer look like a USB disk. My iPod holds considerably more music than a cd changer, so I don't need CDs in the car any more.

When using the true tray feature with Iphone inside will phone signal be lost at all and can you make phone calls using the actual head unit itself with the iphone in the true tray.
-
It's not recommended to put the phone in the tray as it can lose the signal. I have a separate 12V charger for my phone from before, so I tend to plug the phone into that in the car, and use the iPhone audio over bluetooth. The phone will work over bluetooth too.
The phone will work inside the unit, but the signal is much reduced.

does the uk spec come with s-mosfet?
-
I don't think it does. See http://www.sony.co.uk/product/mfi-ipod-car-audio/dsx-s300btx/tab/technicalspecs for the technical specs, and that says no S-MOSFET
-
Nope, no s-mosfet.. Sorry

Does anyone know if it is easy and simple to fit?
-
Speaking personally, my Golf TDi had already had a Kenwood minidisc player fitted, having exchanged it for the factory fitted CD player. The bloke who installed it took less than 20 minutes to fit my Sony. I imagined it went straight into the wiring left behind by the Kenwood and I ended up feeling as if I could have fitted my self! Prior to the installation he told me that he may need to get another piece of cabling but he wouldn't know that until he removed the Kenwood. In the event, all the cabling he needed was there.
-
Yes, very easy, the wiring loom is a good standard connection and should plug straight in to your car, if you do need an adaptor they are freely available at little cost, fit of the DSX to the standard car is as straight forward. A brilliant player with blue tooth and everything you will need though as I say, I wish it would play lossless. Advice when writing music for playing on the DSX is to go for the highest bit rate it will play which is 320kbs, there are various software programmes available to do this including Roxio Creator, Best of luck.

Does anyone know if an iPhone 4s will work via Bluetooth to make calls and play music with this unit?
-
My previous iPhone 3GS and my present iPhone 4S work perfectly with this unit via bluetooth. Simply follow the instructions in the manual to link the two together.
-
-
Does anyone know if this unit will work with an iPhone 4s via bluetooth to make/receive calls and also play music? Cheers
-
Not sure about the iPhone 4s, but my iPhone 4 with iOS 5 works fine with bluetooth for music and making calls. I don't see why a 4s doesn't work.
-
yes, it definitely does... just leave the bluetooth setting on the head unit and your phone and it will connect automatically when you sit in your car. and even though the microphone is behind the flipdown facia, it can be left up and is just as clear.
-
Yes, the Iphone is fully functional with the DSX, Sony built in more immediate compatability with the Ipod music player than they did with their own Walkman music player. The DSX comes complete with a USB to Iphone/Ipod adapter, the USB to Walkman is not available in the UK and is possibly only sourced from the US. Bluetooth IPhone connectivity is good and fast.

Does this headunit come with a remote as standard?
I am expecting it to come with a card remote, based on what I have read across a number of websites.
Additionally will this unit take an external sony microphone?
Many thanks...-
Yes it comes with a wireless remote. It does accept a Sony external microphone to use for making voice calls, though to date, I've found the built in microphone is good enough.
-
The unit comes with its own remote control in the form of a small card type unit. In fact, this is vitally important in several respects, but mainly concerning the fact that the very poor design of the so-called 'Multi-way encoder' makes it almost impossible to select anything that involves a straight, downward push of the control. This can usually only be achieved by using the central 'Enter' button on the remote control. Trying to do this while driving is potentially very dangerous.
With regard to an external microphone. The recommended unit is the XA-MC10. According to the instruction manual, there are two recommended installation sites: i) sunroof; ii) the dashboard. However, once an external microphone is installed you cannot use the built-in microphone (see page 38 of the manual).

Having trouble with my unit in that it only seeks on tuner FM at 0.2 kHz increments and so completely misses out radio 1 on auto tune and manual tune will not lock on fully so although signal will be audible, there will be static and no rds info, anyone no why this is? any way round it?
-
Where did you buy the unit? My unit can tune in to radio 1 fine, but I have previously had another (alpine) unit that was bought in Canada. That had the same problem, and only tuned to .1, .3, .5, .7 & .9 frequencies when you need .2,.4,.6,.8&.0 for the uk
North American specification units often have a different FM tuning setup to cope with the slightly different frequency allocations

-
will it work with nokia n8
-
Sorry, Megan. I have no experience with Nokia mobiles. All I can tell you for certain is that it works faultlessly with the iPhones 3GS and 4S. Let's hope someone else has the information you need. John
-
hi megan, i use a htc desire hd and after spending days trying to get answers from sony without success i just use the bluetooth option to play my music from handset to headset. if your trying to use the sensme software then that only works with sony mp3 players. i managed to get get quite a bit of info from sony about the dsx so if you have any more questions i will be happy to try and answer them. all the best, john. ( not the same one as before) :)
-
hi megen, sorry i have a samsung galaxy s but i do now that the bluetooth works very well and i must say a lot better than PARROT dose so i think you will have no problems
