Good points:
Small, feels robust, with good spec. Quick start-up and takes picture instantly, which is great for action shots. Variable rapid shoot is very useful too. Great camera.
Bad points:
Laquer came off front cover within a few uses, and went everywhere. Still looks ok, but logo now feels a bit sharp to the touch.
Touch screen function buttons close to edge of screen, so easy to accidentally press.
Lens close to corner too, so fingers sometimes cover the picture. Need to get used to the best holding position, I guess.

Good points:
Easy use, great underwater photos, slim line profile, Looks great at the pool side and out in the evening (other waterproof cameras do look big, bulky and even childish). Nice Touch screen once you get used to it.
Fantastic HD video recording. Look at YouTube for videos of this camera, helped me pick it and I AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT
Bad points:
easy to get tip of finger in picture, worth getting second battery (small battery but it is a thin camera so that's only fair). Mono sound recording on movie. Picture quality is v.good even at 10 mega pixel (remember you only need 3-5 to print out a normal 6"X4" photo) I have seen better but NOT from a thin waterproof, drop proof camera that looks this sexy !!

Shock proof, waterproof. build quality, ease of use. twilight mode gave good lowlight pics
Bad points:
Images a little washed out, 1/3 of screen not used for image so equal to 2.5 inch screen, though waterproof can't be used near sand due to sliding front cover.

Sony Cyber-shot reviews and deals

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX5

  1. how do you download your pictures to your computer,do you connect the camera directly to the computer via a lead or can you only get to the pictures via the memory card?
    Michael asked on
    1. Can do through a mini usb -> usb link. Do not have to use a memery card can use an SD card as well

      Jane replied on

  2. can you make your pictures black and white or serpia? and how?
    Dale asked on
    1. In short: NO... unfortunately thebiggest limit as well as the tunnel effect is it s lack of features for you to play around with. Like a cell phone, you can edit your pictures on the phone and draw on them but I was in fron of a beautiful tree that would've looked awesome in B&W and... nothing...

NONETHELESS, do not let it stop you from getting it, it is truly amazing as long as you dont put peoples faces in the corners...
      Javier replied on

  3. does this camera have an image stabilizer.. coz m last sony camera photos were always blurred..
    hina asked on
    1. It does indeed, one click to the "mode" touchscreen button, and there is a feature called "anti motion blur". It takes like 10 pix in 1 second and they come out awesome. If you send me an email I can send tops 3 pix of anything you want except ppl (e.g. underwater, panorama, handheld tiwlight, anti motion blur, etc...)
      Javier replied on

    2. Not sure if it has, think so as all pictures have been very clear and no blurring including when taking pictures from a varity of transports
      Jane replied on

  4. how many minutes can the camera can stay under the water
    pat asked on
    1. as far as im aware indef up to the stated depth
      David replied on

    2. Actually it says 1 hour on the leaflet thing... but I havent experienced any trouble having it in my pocket at the beach all day... Only thing is paint on the front left completely after salt water touched it... maybe just my experience though! :)
      Javier replied on

  5. hi , i've got this camera , and when a take a photo with flash there are sometimes white spots, is it ok?
    Raphik asked on
    1. No it's not but it happens to me too... I think it's because it is a waterproof camera it has a little cover screen in front of the lens so the flash light reflects off of it! Just a theory though... Hope that helped if not, Im here :)
      Javier replied on

  6. I've just discovered that the problem was caused because of the dust floating on air
    Raphik asked on
    1. ok awesome! as long as it works fine :)
      Javier replied on

  7. when u print the pictures does the date in which the photo was taken appear on the printed version of the photo????
can u do effects like black and white, mirror etc
    poppy asked on
    1. no effects that i know of and so sorry but never printed a picture ut I guess that depends on what you tell it to do
      Javier replied on

  8. Can you use the zoom during the video operation
    rod asked on
    1. yes but the focus is a bit slow to catch up to the zoom so it might be a bit blurry for a sec.
      Javier replied on

  9. How many mega pixels does it have?
    Charlie asked on
    1. 10.2 million effective megapixels resolution
      David replied on

    2. 10.2.... look at ANY website...
      Javier replied on

  10. Can you do audio dubbing or voice memos on snap shots?
    Tom asked on
    1. not that I know of... so no... also not too sure what you mean, so no. :)
      Javier replied on

  11. My screen has little scratched lines...and how to avoid that?
    Uvi asked on
    1. dn't scratch it...buy a screen protector... get a case... but remember its supposed to be an adventure proof camera so the idea is that it won't be as pretty as a DLR... also mine has no more paint in the front so welcome to the club :)
      Javier replied on

  12. hi,can i introduce music to mi sony tx5
    charles asked on
    1. Sorry I am not sure
      Jane replied on

    2. well yes, u can like any usb portable device can transport information from place to place... if u are asking me if you ll be able to listen to music... it s not an mp3 player
      Javier replied on

  13. hi,
i was wondering if you could shoot movies on this camera???
    tabby asked on
    1. Yes very good HD movies can be shot by the camera, very good for home movies
      Jane replied on

    2. yes, in HD, look at an website
      Javier replied on

  14. Is it possible to set the ISO/ASA speed or will the camera always decide what's best ?
    Hope you can help
    Richard asked on
    1. you can decide to a certain extent but it s not a DLR.
      Javier replied on

  15. Does this camera have a light trail setting? Party nights out always look more atmospheric when the photograph has light trails...
    mia asked on
    1. not that I know of... to be honest it does limit you quite a bit in tat sense and remember that the tunnel effect will make all your night out portraits of more than 2 people VERY distorted!
      Javier replied on

  16. As per question no1 on this page. what is a mini usb, how much are they and where do i buy them and where do they fit in my camera?
    thank you
    Stacey asked on
    1. Not sure of price as came with camera, fit into base of camera and very useful for downloading pctures
      Jane replied on

  17. IS THERE ANY VIDEO RECORDING FACILITY IN SONY CYBER SHOT?

    BINU asked on
    1. yes... and I think u spent more time asking me this than looking it up yourself. I am not a salesman, I am here for you to ask me my opinion on the camera... not if can take pictures...
      Javier replied on

  18. does it have a viewfinder as well as a screen. I find in bright sunlight you need a viewfinder.
    Jan asked on
    1. No, just screen
      Zygmunt replied on

    2. Unfortunately I lost my TX5 very soon after getting it, so I'm not able to tell you about it's use in all situations. However I took it to Egypt and I had no difficulty, even in full sunlight, in using the screen to set up shots and view the results. There is no viewfinder but I did not miss it.
I have a small bridge camera (a Pentax x-90) and while I had it, I far preferred to use the TX5 instead of the X-90. It fits in your pocket easily and is quick to get out and get a shot - the shutter is fast to fire.
Just don't - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - depend on the wrist strap to keep hold of the TX5 !!!!! -especially if you are in the sea.
      David replied on

  19. when using the slide show can we add /download extra music other than the 4 samples the camera comes with?
    NP asked on
    1. Might be able to but I never tried it.. to be honest do not let that deter you away from buying the camera if it does not, the screen is way too small compared to any screen where you would enjoy the pictures more, and the music does make for some laughs :)
      Javier replied on

  20. Which is the best capacity and type of card to buy with the camera?
eg, Sony Mem stick 8GB, SD card 8GB, 16GB etc.
    Alistair asked on
    1. at the moment i use a Sony memory stick, which gives good results but iam thinking of going for a H,Definition card group 10 for quicker response and longivity-Regards Dave
      David replied on

    2. I use memory sticks because have had a son for ages would use 8gb, I actually have a 4gb memory card and find no problem at all
      Jane replied on

    3. Any SD card with any capacity will do, I went on a trip for 2 weeks with a 4gb over 600 pix and 3-4 minute videos at maximum quality without deleting anything until the end. Really the bigger the better, I was afraid 4 gigs was too small but it was more than fine so if you're going for 8 gigs SD you ll be happy for sure!!!! :)
      Javier replied on

  21. Hello, I'm thinking about getting this camera, but don't want to but it then realise it's no use for everything I want.
My main use for my camera at the moment is mainly for nights out with my friends, pretty simple just shoot and go, holidays, hill walking. The waterproof and shock proof appeal to me for holidays and hill walking although I'm a bit concerned about photos on nights out from what I've seen here. I often take pictures of big groups of friends. Can anyone let me know if the camera is any use for evening, indoor bars / clubs and group shots?
    Cheers :-)
    Sarah asked on
    1. Like all modern cameras it gas settings for all occasions
      David replied on

    2. I have used the camera when going out with friends for the evening and the shots have been fine.

I haven't taken any where it is very dark.

I think it is an excellent camera.
      Eric replied on

    3. I have used my camera in bars and outside at night with and without the flash and have not had any problems.

I rate the camera very highly.
      Jane replied on

  22. Can this camera record in stereo?
    Tony asked on
    1. No sorry it is really a camera not a video recorder
      Zygmunt replied on

    2. No it doesn't sorry
      Jon replied on

  23. Whats the shutter speed like? Is there much delay when taking photographs or starting to record a movie?
    Kyle asked on
    1. not at all it s actually really quick! u can film, switch from underwater to regular mode, film to shooting really quick, it s all touch screen and quite responsive! but again, tunnel effect...
      Javier replied on

    2. I find it fine.My hobbies include photographing steam trains and video them as well. For the money its hard to beat.
      David replied on

  24. Hi! I would like to ask 2 things
First is how is the quality of the images and the general performance of the camera underwater, does anyone had any problem with the underwater usage?
and how much time the camera can operate with a full charge and a reasonable usage (taking pics and record some videos)
    Nickolas asked on
    1. The camera is brilliant underwater and we took some beautiful pictures snorkelling in the Maldives earlier this year. What surprised me though was that it is very noisy underwater when you video. I expect there is something in the settings that can sort that out though!
haven't managed to run out of battery although I make sure I charge it if I have used the camera a lot during the day.

      Hope this helps
      Jane replied on

  25. 2 questions from me...

I know its waterproof but has anyone had any experience dropping it? Wondering if its pretty durable in general considering its waterproof etc.

I was also wondering if anyone knew where to get it cheapest, I have a £50 amazon voucher that I'd like to use but can only find it there for £250! Is £179 here at Jessops the best deal?

    Thanks for your feedback.
    Tom asked on
    1. Seems to be quite hardy but have not tested it to distruction
      Zygmunt replied on

    2. like most people I know it is water proof but i have not tested it. I live by the sea and go out in the rain to take photos and it is fine with sand and surf and rain. but I have never submerged my camera
      Jon replied on

    3. I would not use this camera as a dedicated underwater camera, even though you can. I would use it as a point and shoot and if it gets wet then hey, no problem
      Jon replied on

  26. Can you charge it via USB?
    Joe asked on
    1. I have been looking at the instruction book and it tells you to the charger provided.Obviously it is a transformer from240v to3.6v but there is no mention of usb charging.Hope this helps.Dave
      David replied on

    2. I echo David: No.
      Javier replied on

  27. is it made in Japan or China?
    Yas asked on
    1. china
      Eric replied on

    2. Lucky Eric knows as I have no idea!
      Jane replied on

    3. Made in japan
      colin replied on

  28. hi, going on holiday and have never used the camera underwater, in fact never got it wet, despite it being waterproof i am somewhat apprehensive, i will be snorkelling so not going beyond 2m, will my tx5 survive?
    James asked on
    1. Hi,
I've used mine for whitewater kayaking, so it's had some high pressure splashes. I've not used it underwater for any long periods, but if its washed correctly before closing the shutter as recommended, I would expect it should be ok.
Unfortunately, there's only really one way to find out!!
      Cheers
      Ian replied on

    2. Hi,
I have never used my camera under water, so can not really answer you question. However, I have dropped it into water, (a sink of soapy water, 6 inches deep). And no problems.
      Jon replied on

  29. As it has a waterproof feature you will.be using it in water but how does the touch screen cope being in water???
    Michael asked on
    1. Hi, I never used it in water I just wanted an all weather camera. I have read a review stating the touch screen is very unresponsive when in water. also remember not to get sand onto it ...jams up the sliding front
