Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony CMT-MX550i

  1. Has this got a headphone Socket
    Martin asked on
    1. No it hasnt got a headphone socket.
      Barry replied on

    2. Sadly no it hasn't, its the only let down.
      Gavin replied on

  2. does the speakers unplug from the base unit in order to pass cable through a hi fi unit or are they fitted in at the base unit and the speaker?
    sharon asked on
    1. The speaker cables detach at both ends. At the back of the unit they are on plugs and into the back of the speakers it is the normal speaker connection (bare wire ends into clamps) so you can pass the cables through a hi fi unit, no problem. I have had my Sony for a few months now and i cannot fault it, i mostly play from a memory stick in MP3 format or from my ipod, its all so easy to do and it sounds really good. I'm glad i got this one as i had looked at afew before settling on the Sony. No regrets. Enjoy!
      Barry replied on

    2. The speakers are connected as Barry has detailed in his response, it is a plug at one and bare wires at the other. My wife loves it as she can play from her IPod and charge up her IPhone as well. Best buy for me in 2011 so far...
      Peter replied on

  3. Hi there, can you play music from your laptop wirelessly through the system. Many Thanks
    karen asked on
    1. There is no Wireless feature on the CMT-550i as far as I am aware. You may be able to connect wirelessly using the USB Port and a Wireless adaptor. Sorry I could not be more helpful.
      Peter replied on

    2. sorry i am not sure.it is not wireless.
      ivan replied on

  4. Is this the version with the ipod 'door' at the front or does it sit on top?
    Rebekah asked on
    1. This is the version with the iPod door, it's on the front left and is easy to use! It has a little s switch inside that has to be "flicked" in order to close the door, though it's easy to use. Hope this helps you make your choice.
      Darren replied on

    2. Exactly as Darren has said !!
      David replied on

  5. Is this compatible with the Iphone 4?
    alex asked on
    1. It has the standard ipod multi pin plug. I'm afraid i dont have an iphone so i dont know what connection is on the iphone 4, but if it is the normal apple plug it will fit.
      Barry replied on

  6. How long are the speaker wires as i've heard they are quite short?
Are they more than say 2 meters?
    Ian asked on
    1. The speaker wires are quite short certainly less than 2m. You can easily add some cable .
I did this to arrange the speakers on top of my kitchen cabinets, easy job !
      David replied on

    2. The speaker cables are about 1.5 metres
      Peter replied on

  7. hey i am wonting to buy some new ipoad docking sytem would you recomend buying this product and do you like this one apreared from the higher priced one thanks

    henry asked on
    1. Yes it looks great, sounds great too. If pushed for critisism then I would say that the remote control could do with a display so you know what ipod song you wish to select, however I just go over to the stereo. Also, make sure you get a good dab aerial to go with it. The one supplied isn't adequate.

      Thanks.
      Karen replied on

    2. Don't hesitate, you won't regret buying this product. It has great sound quality and for the money represents good value. Yes it doesn't have a headphone output, so if that's your intention go for the next machine up. Also a DAB aerial will be required. Not too pricy, though to be honest we are managing quite nicely! Hope this helps you make your choice.
      Darren replied on

    3. yeah i would definitely suggest this product, the more expensive model won;t be worth the extra money for the extra features you get on it. I disagree on the ariel mine works fine but it all depends on where you are in the country for dab signal. But overall highly recommend, i have had no problems with itand don't even have small complaints about the system.

  8. On My Existing old Sony System the CD Changer has died. Does this one have a plug in place for attaching a Sony Turntable Add on. It is a small jack plug on it.(I know I still have vinyl)
    Maureen asked on
    1. Funny....same thing happened to my old sony, this one does have a usb, but when i put my turntable in, it came up on lcd display that it wasn't compatible so am a bit fed up, but i can still use turntable through my lap top so not a major prob. I love my new system otherwise.
      emma replied on

    2. There is an audio 'in' jack point and a USB point which are both on the front.

      Hope that helps.
      Maureen replied on

  9. Hi there
Could you tell me please whether there is a facility to put the docking station sound through my existing wall speakers, ie could I purchase the cable to do this or is it not possible? Many thanks indeed.
    Jo asked on
    1. Hi Jo, i assume you mean the ipod dock. It is integral in the unit and does not have a seperate feed that you can "break" in to. I would expect that instead of using the spaekers that come with the unit you could plug your wall speakers in instead, assuming the impedance was the same. Hope this helps.
      Barry replied on

  10. hi
we have this system but as the dock is for the iphone 3g, we have a iphone 4 and for some reason it doesnt fit into the docking station on the hifi,, is there a converter we could buy so we can play our iphone 4 on this system?
    michelle asked on
    1. Hi
I use my i Phone 4 on the system and have had no problems so far . I did notice that my phone does not ring through the system over music . Did you not receive a little pack of plastic docking sleeves in the box ?
      David replied on

    2. You should have a set of docking adapters which are supplied with the unit. They provide a docking guide for iPhones and iPods.
      Peter replied on

  11. Dose the cd player play mp3 cd-r
    David asked on
    1. I'm not sure, i've never tried, I don't have any mp3 cd-rs. It plays normal cd-r's but to be honest, i've always got my ipod on so I can't say.

      Sorry.
      Karen replied on

    2. I'm not sure also! Generally speaking it's a bit hit/miss. I've not tried it with this as we play Album CD's and ipod.
Suggest you go into the store with your disc and check it out. This is the only true way you'll find out.
      Darren replied on

  12. Hi,

Is this system (ipod dock) compatible to earlier generations of the ipod (first Nano and Ipod video)?

    Gus asked on
    1. I'm sorry I can't help on this occasion because I have not used the ipod dock as yet. It was one of the features we thought would be useful though for our Iphone.

Sorry I can't be of any real assistance.
      Maureen replied on

  13. DAB radio.Do i need ariel putting on the roof space. No signal with wire provided.Got no ipod may treat myself.Pleased with it so far? Thanks.
    ray asked on
    1. You may have to if you cant get a signal with the wire ariel that comes with the unit. Mine works fine with this wire but i do live in an elevated spot so no obstructions to the signal. i think that Argos sell a DAB ariel which is like a "set top" one but for the best reception then one in the loft or on the roof would give the best reception. i am really pleased with mine, so much so that i am thinking of getting another one to put in my spare room which i use as an office. The ipod connection is good but i find that i use a memory stick more than anything else because i get most of my music in MP3 format.
      Barry replied on

  14. I have a 4th generation iTouch, does anyone know if this will work on the dock?
    Elle asked on
    1. yes
      dave replied on

    2. It takes an iphone 4 so am assuming connection is the same too.
      David replied on

  15. can you please send me manual. I had no service, but i sorted it somehow. need a manual. do not understand why it is not included. thanks.
    olga asked on
    1. You can obtain the manual online at the following address.

      http://www.sony.co.uk/search/nsearch.action?sectiontype=Search&query=CMT-MX550i&site=odw_en_GB&wepQuery=CMT-MX550i
      Peter replied on

    2. Have you looked Online? Put the Model and Serial Number in the Search Engine and the Manual should be there for you to view/download? Failing that, contact Sony Direct....This is a customer review!!

  16. does the Nano 6G fit in the dock - there are so many different systems that say they work fine with nanos, but not the 6G! Ipod dock is all I've been able to find out lol - any answers appreciated guys :)
    Karen asked on
    1. Sorry, cannot confirm this as i have an older generation nano.
      Barry replied on

    2. Sorry can't help haven't a clue what a Nao 6G is!
      Maureen replied on

  17. Does this unit have the facility to attach an 'old school' turntable with two pin (red and white) connectors?
    Mick asked on
    1. MICK...Just doubled checked and no there is not. only 1 jack plug on the front for line in ...regards..
      robert replied on

  18. Hi
Can you plug different speakers in to system or do you have to use the speakers supplied?
    Katie asked on
    1. I used the supplied speakers and found them to be ideal for the kitchen area. My only negative comment is the length of cable that's supplied , way too short but adding extra is not really difficult
      David replied on

    2. Any compatible speakers will work.
      Peter replied on

  19. Did u find it easy to buy a dab ariel as recommended I live in a strong signal area but the flimsy one supplied it not very good
    Craig asked on
    1. i have not bought one, even though its flimsy i have had no problem with the arials supplied, my signal is near enough perfect. Sorry for the lack of help
      Thomas replied on

  20. When you connect an mp3 player via the usb socket does the unit charge the mp3 players battery.
    Keith asked on
    1. I haven't yet used the USB socket, but the unit does charge my ipod when it is connected. so i'm sure it will.
      emma replied on

  21. Thinking seriously of buying the CMT-MX550i.
Could I put all my CD's onto a portable external drive and play them back via the USB connection. Can they be categorised into "music type files" along with the artist and then selected as required.
    Jim asked on
    1. Hi Jim, not sure that you can because when you select the USB function it reads all of what is plugged in and then you are able to select by folder (each CD) and then by track. When i have used a 16 gig pen drive it takes ages to read it before you can actually play anything so i have split things up into 4 gig drives instead and they load in about 10 seconds and then you are away. Your idea would work but it would want to load all of whatever you plug in so a 500 gig portable drive would take forever to load. Perhaps you could have your categories onto to seperate pen drives instead, using something like an 8 gig which would work fine. Its a really good system and i have had mine almost a year now so with a bit of compromise on how you store your music i dont think that you would be disapointed with it. I have just seen one on offer for £155 so i was thinking of getting another one for my spare room. Hope this helps.
      Barry replied on

  22. I was trying to set up the alarm following the manual, but couldn't do that properly. When the system was turning on in the morning, it didn't play the CD, but switched straight to DAB, and I couldn't change it.
Also, was trying to set up FM, but it appears to not working without antenna.. Can u give me an advice regarding the alarm, at least?
    Vitaly asked on
    1. im sorry i wish i could my system is in the kitchen there for i dont use the alarm. what dose the paper work say, with regards to the radio i put in the antenna which
came with it and the DAB tuned in perfect. hope this helps you
      robert replied on

  23. Does the cmt mx550i now have a headphone socket as currys seems to be selling this hi fi with headphones as part of a package?
    kelly asked on
    1. yes mine does

      emma replied on

    2. There is no headphone socket on my system.
      Peter replied on

  24. music from my cd,s and apple nano i pod only comes through one speaker is this normal as the radio comes through on both speakers cheers jim
    jim asked on
    1. Hi Jim, that isnt normal, there must be something wrong. have a look through the manual and see if you have accidentally altered a setting. If you havent then you need to take it back as it would appear to be faulty.
      Barry replied on

  25. Hi I have just purchased this system and I can't get my new iPod touch to play when docked! Can anyone help.
    Lorraine asked on
    1. Hi There,
I can't answer your question at the moment (I don't have an ipod yet) but have you selected "ipod" on your function button, that should work. If it doesn't, contact the Sony help people.
      Barry replied on

  26. can you add more speakers to the sound hifi eg buying more speakers to make it have subs and surround sounds
    cal asked on
    1. with this model there is no provision for extra speakers
      robert replied on

    2. No i dont think so. Only additional input is an audio in channel.
The sound is decent enough for my living room and quality of sound nice enough.
May not be loud enough for people who want to blow their ears off.
      David replied on

    3. No
      Dave replied on

  27. hello, is the box no the speakers the main unit the same as the cmt mx 750 modle ? im thinking of buliding a big hifi
    cal asked on
    1. no
      robert replied on

  28. hi ya ,i ve got a mixer and a turntable ,
is there a AUX port ,so that could connect my mixer and turntable
    to this system ?
    thanx
    maxine asked on
    1. I'm sorry to say it does not have AUX port.
      Annette replied on

  29. Why does the cd player skip!! I've had two units both exchanged after being bought I got fed up with the third one and just kept it and just use the ipod dock
    Eamon asked on
    1. I have not had any cd player problems on my machine, it is worth sending a email to Sony Techincal support and ask for their view.
      Peter replied on

    2. To be fair I have had no problems with my unit other than my I phone not recognising the dock
      David replied on

  30. Hello, does anyone know if I can connect and Ipad to this system to play music. Do you need and adapter?? Thanks.
    Carol asked on
    1. The iPod port will only fit a normal size iPod and guess you would have to get an extension adaptor works with iPhone 4s original iPod and iPod nano no problem.
      justin replied on

  31. Does it play normal CD's?
    Deane asked on
    1. Yes, it plays normal CD's but for a better performance I connected my old speakers to it.
      Barry replied on

    2. Yes it does. It also plays MP3 compilation discs.
