Good points:
Great LCD and images.Autofocus quick and accurate.Write times to card good, but program selection via pushbuttons and rear screen sometimes slow in bright sunlight, even with the latest firmware installed,I think a selection wheel would be better.
I have fitted a fold down screen shade which does help, and I recommend it for the Nex-5
So I tend to leave the camera in"Intelligent Auto",which does a great job 99% of the time.Build quality is excellent.Flash a little slow to recycle, but no worse than other similar cameras. All in all,a great camera for taking out, when a DSLR is just too much of burden, but when you still want good, sharp, photographs.
A top quality product from Sony, who are producing some excellent cameras these days, and lead the market now in some areas.
Bad points:
A great all rounder, but menu system is a bit slow to use sometimes, but it does feel a great piece of kit!

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Sony Alpha NEX-5K with 18-55mm lens

  1. When shooting in raw, can you import files directly into Photoshop CS4?
    David asked on
    1. I'm afraid I don't have Photoshop CS4 or any other version of Photoshop. You can import files directly into Lightroom and Photoshop Elements so I would guess you can in CS4.
      Chris replied on

    2. i have not used the RAW format as yet but i think that it is possible to do so
      john replied on

  2. I already have a Sony A350 but find it a bit bulky to transport around - I've already invested in a number of lenses and wondered whether they can be used on this camera? Also what is the quality of pics like compared to the A350? Many thanks
    Abi asked on
    1. Yes, you can use all your lens but will have to buy the lens adaptor. I have the first Alpha not the 350 but am pleased with the photographs. I also found it bulky to carry the Alpha. The Nex weighs a lot less as well.
      Isabel replied on

    2. you can use other lenses, but you need an adapter that allows you to connecting.
cost of this adapter is £ 150 to £ 200 it depends
      SEBASTIAN replied on

  3. knowing that the battery is very poor for the NEX 5... using it casually, can it last exactly 330 photo snaps while changing the settings or would it die in minutes?

another thing? would it be super wise/smart to buy a 1500mAh battery as a spare? cause the one that comes with the NEX5 is a 1080mAh battery :(
    Jonny asked on
    1. Q1: A1: I have had no problems with battery life in general use as yet.

Q2: A2: I would say yes, I larger battery is going to be better, as a spare or regular use. If expence is no problem.
      Tony replied on

  4. Hi, I'm thinking of investing in this camera, I already have a Nikon D300 but want something a little smaller and lighter to go everywhere with me. Is this camera suitable for this and can I use my Nikon lenses with it?
    Reve asked on
    1. you will need an adapter for your nikon lens.search google and you will find the correct adapter .For a go everywhere camera the 16 mm lens would be your best option due to the size of the 18-55
      Simon replied on

  5. I've never really used proper cameras like this before, normally it's just a digital camera from my local super-market. So I don't know anything about lenses and was therefore wondering whether I should really bother investing in the 18-55mm lens or will the 16mm pancake lens be good enough for me as I have never used a camera like this before? Thanks!
    Charlotte asked on
    1. Well this everything roll into one very easy to use you will want to part with ever this worth investing in I give this camera 10 out 10
      James replied on

  6. How does the screen hold up in bright sunlight - I'm not sure about the lack of a viewfinder?
    sue asked on
    1. It is better than most LCD screens in bright light and I have not found the lack of a viewfinder to be a problem even though I was adamant that I would never buy a camera without one! This is the best camera I have ever owned in almost 60 years of amateur photography.
      David replied on

    2. the LCD is very very good but with the pancake len auto focus is good but with the zoom len make sure nothing else is in the shot otherwise it will focus on that. in bright sun it is pretty good, use the tilt option for best viewing.
      charles replied on

  7. i just ordered the camera soney nex 5 from jessops, but i didnt claim the £50 cash back, do u know how to claim the £50 cash back??
    Gajendra asked on
    1. No, sorry. I didn't order it from them. I suggest you contact Jessops.
      Callum replied on

    2. I suugest that you contact Jessops and ask them how to go about making the claim. It is some time since I made my claim so I don't remember the detail but I do know that it was straightforward.
      David replied on

  8. i am thinking of buying the above to take a short film. Anyone have any comments on the results when downloaded onto a lap top and the final on a larger screen say a tv
    jackie asked on
    1. Yes, I also use the camera for the same thing and I personally think that the results are excellent. The Full HD really is good, although I would suggest that you try to keep the camera as stable as possible. The results are probably as good as a decent camcorder though can't compete with a good one. I have a 42inch LG LCD and the picture shows very well on there.
      Daniel replied on

  9. How well does the camera work in low light, without flash?

    Angela asked on
    1. I have found it works excellent in low light even without the use of a tripod. If you have a steady hand its even better
      Tanya replied on

    2. I have found it works excellent in low light even without the use of a tripod. If you have a steady hand its better than any other camera I have used or owned and I have had numerous makes and models.
