- Good points:
- Well thought out, fast, easy to use, nice to handle. Anti shake system works very well. The menu system is very clear and the joystick control is excellent. The viewfinder screen gives a high quality picture and the comprehensive information is particularly well presented. Picture quality is very good and movie quality is perfectly ok for my purposes. Fun to use and I have yet to make use of all it has to offer.
- Bad points:
- No optical viewfinder, in line with it's competitors.

- Good points:
- Fantastic monitor. Good zoom range. Paper manual.
- Bad points:
- Disapointing performance in auto mode compared to Canon IXUS 870. Feels clunky and hard-edged compared to the Canon. Doesn't fit as comfortably in the hand. Autofocus frequently struggles for no apparent reason. Annoying limitations on flash controls in auto mode. Cover for a-v socket is desperately flimsy.

. This is the compact camera that comes closest to rendering the SLR obsolete. The one limitation is that the screen is hard to see in bright sunlight but this featuure is shared with all compacts that lack a view finder. The flexibility and the range of features is better than any other compact on the market. 28-300 is an impressive range for optical zoom. The 300 lens combined with the macro facility allows good photos of very tiny things -e.g. insects.
The worst feature is that the mode dial on the top is frequently accidentally rotated in putting away/taking out the camera. This problem is shared with the predecessor, the Ricoh R8, but was not a problem with the R7. It would be relatively simple to strengthen the locking here by e.g. requiring the dial to be pushed in or raised in order to switch mode. - Bad points:
- See above 2nd para.

- Good points:
- Wanted to use this for digiscoping so needed a camera with a cable release. Works well and gives excellent images that can be further enlarged.
- Bad points:
- Control buttons small and fiddly, but all compacts are pretty much the same
