Good points:
Bought it for my daughter to study photograhy at school. She finds it easy to use and the image quality is great. The VR function is a bonus; a big step on from my D40. Worth the extra over a bridge camera.
Bad points:
Probably the weight if anything compared to an ordinary point and shoot, but not a detriment.

Good points:
Excellent little SLR Camera, so easy to use and navigate around the features and the quality of pictures for the price is outstanding. I bought the kit and a fixed lens, changing them is easy. I bought this as my Nikon D40 was 5 years old and starting to become unreliable and I don''t regret it
Bad points:
Due to its compact size for an SLR camera it can feel a little unbalanced when you put larger lens on it. However I will be purchasing a battery grip to counteract this minor niggle

Good points:
Loads of features, this camera has point and shoot capabilities, for those times when you need to just switch it on and snap away but also has all the manual settings for experimenting with different photo techniques.
Bad points:
The bundled lens is not the best, so you are best to get a different one for getting the best from the camera.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Being a keen amateur I bought the camera as a present for someone who wanted to take up photography. I wanted a camera that would encourage and evelop photographic interest. It was ordered and arrived in good time and well packed. In my opinion this is now a competitivley priced entry level DSLR camera with lots of features. The help menu guides the beginner from point and shoot through to developing alternative photographic options. For the more advanced camera user there are plenty of creative opportunities with this camera. The integral flash is useful for fill in flash techniques. The supplied zoom lens is useful. With the discounts offered on this camera in my opinion it is a good buy.
Bad points:
Being Nikon additional bolt on goodies such as a speedlite flash are a bit more expensive than rivals.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Nikon D3100
The Nikon D3100 is a 14.2 Megapixel DSLR camera with high sensitivity CMOS sensor, Live View, Full HD Movies and helpful Guide Mode.

14 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
The CMOS sensor housed within the Nikon D3100 has 14.2 effective megapixels for outstandingly sharp images. The high sensitivity of the sensor means that up to ISO 3200 values are within the normal range and can even be extended to ISO 12,800 in HI 2 Mode. The EXPEED 2 Engine keeps noise to a minimum and allows for fast response times.

Guide Mode
The improved Guide Mode on the D3100 is full of helpful navigational tools and graphic illustrations of camera settings known as “Assist Images” – for example showing the effect of wider apertures on depth of field and overall sharpness.

Full HD D-Movie
Record full 1080 HD movies with the D3100 with the option also to record in standard definition. The AF-F (Full Time Servo AF) enables continuous focusing in Live View while recording movies. This removes the need to keep the shutter release half pressed to allow the camera to focus. Movie editing is also possible on-camera.

Scene Auto Selector
When Auto mode or Auto (no flash) mode is selected, the Scene Auto Selector chooses from Portrait, Landscape, Closeup and Night Portrait modes automatically.

Additional Features

Face Detection for up to 35 faces in a frame
Independent Movie Record Button and Release Mode Selector
CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) for HDMI connection – allows remote controlled playback of images and movies when connected to a HD TV.
Improved Exposure Compensation algorithm
View NX2 Software included
11 Point AF
3.0” LCD Monitor
3fps Continuous Shooting

  3. Do you think this camera is suitable for a first time DSLR user.
    Loraine asked on
    1. I'm a 1st time user myself and yes I would recommend it. It's very straight forward to use and has auto mode for first shots that won't dissapoint you and progressively learn how to use manual functions
      Mariola replied on

    2. its my first dslr,I used a canon G9 for three years.
the 3100 is very easy to use .In auto it is just like a point n shoot.
using the modes: portrait scene macro etc easy to use.
I have had mine a few weeks now and love it.
      Steve replied on

  4. Hi there I want to know which slr to go for, as this is my first slr.I dont mind any slr camera as far as its easy to use and v v v v good picture quality
    john asked on
    1. this is a very open question, some people like Levi jeans some like Wranglers its what suits you.
All I can say is I read all the revues in all the mags and all of them rated the 3100 very highly.
Since I have got my camera I have been amazed by the picture quality
the ease of use,you can fire away in auto and get instant lovely results.
You can use the macro portrait panorama modes ,same thing lovely results
you can boost colours from the menu's in the camera if you wish as opposed to using external software.
low light photography not using the flash gives very good results
would I buy this camera again YES
      Steve replied on

    2. Friends of mine having canons different models but they where shock of the picture quality, that was my very good choice and I would highly recommend this slr!!

  5. does it come with a battery, or do u have to buy that seperately???

    1. Battery included
      Steve replied on

    2. It comes with battery and charger.
      Robert replied on

  6. i have been using an old SLR pentax camera were i have to pay to develop photos and i am looking for an SLR that gives results instantly without loosing the quality as well as being lightweight as I am never without my camera. will the Nixon D3100 do the job ?? or
    Hannh asked on
    1. I have, this evening, taken a lovely sunset shot, & without editing it, sent it to the local newspaper. I was really pleased with the picture, much better than my old camera, which was a Fujufilm S9600, looking like a DSLR but in fact was a compact. The Nikon D3100 is lighter than the Fujifilm, & although I haven't taken many photos yet (weather been rubbish!) I am very pleased with those I have taken. Use a USB lead & you can put the pictures straight onto your computer, then do what you want with them. Print those you want to frame, give someone etc, & keep the rest for whatever!
      Margaret replied on

    2. Pentax is absolutely rubish compare to D3100, I'm so happy I bought this camera, quality of the picture is just unbelievable and like me u r not gonna be disappointed.
      Robert replied on

  7. If you wanted a professional quality sharp picture of a piece of furniture, taken in poorish lighting, would this be the camera to get it for you?
    Debbie asked on
    1. The camera seems to work well in low light conditions, and the images are of good quality. I'd be reluctant to call them "professional" as they are not as high quality as much more expensive cameras such as the D3X etc. This is an example from the camera shot in very low light:

      Hope this helps.

    1. never had the 5000 can recommend the D3100

      Steve replied on

  9. Hi looking to buy my first DSLR camera. So far all feedback postive, regarding picture quality. Is it easy to use, & how is the quality of HD video, as no one has mentioned this so far

    Thanks
    Neil asked on
    1. I haven't had my camera long, & not used the video much, but what I have taken is very good. The camera is very easy to use. It has an on-screen guide if you forget how to set it at the time you need to take a picture.
      Margaret replied on

  10. Is this a good camera to buy if you only use it occasionally and for videoing stuff? My Canon IXUS 55 has recently broken, and im not sure if upgrading to a camera like this is a good idea?
    Natalie asked on
    1. I think is good idea cos is very good camera and if u even use it occasionally u still need as good quality as u can and if can buy it just buy it I'm very happy
      Robert replied on

  11. Does the Nikon D3100 Come with a USB ? Or do i have to purchase it seperate.
    Clo asked on
    1. No lead I'm afraid
      A verified owner replied on

  12. Does the Nikon D3100 have a sports mode? Since I am often asked to photo football matches for my school. I also have to photo other events such as sports day and musical events, will this camera support this?
    Lewis asked on
    1. Yes Sports mode,I use it for photographing low light rock gigs with fantastic results
      Sport mode very good
      Steve replied on

  13. After looking at all the previously asked questions and their responses I have gathered that the picture quality is very good. Can someone please let me know more about the quality and ease of use of the HD video.
    Thanks
    Gabrielle asked on
    1. The quality of HD video is very good but its quite hard to focus on the subject in bright sunshine as you are using the screen as opposed to the viewfinder
      paul replied on

  14. did the camera come with flash anf cover
    kamaljit asked on
    1. Yes the camera has a built in Flash but no cover
      Steve replied on

    2. Yes, there is a pop-up flash built in (just above the Nikon logo). It charges instantaneously so in auto mode it kicks in immediately whenever needed.
The camera doesn't come with a case though....
      Antony replied on

  15. which is the best bag to carry d3100 plus telephoto lens 55 300
    angela asked on
    1. I currently don't have a suitable bag for carrying the camera plus extras. The bag that came as part of the kit I bought is pretty useless as it is tiny. Hope someone else can help as I am looking for something similar to yourself, that can also hold filters etc.
      Tash replied on

  16. what is the charge time for the battery and how long does the charge last when taking normal non-flash photo's
    Brian asked on
    1. first charge takes a little bit longer. the battery will last long enough for a full wedding with flash.
      james replied on

  17. how long does the battery last ?
    tony asked on
    1. I shot 369 pic and still got about 20 % left
      Robert replied on

  18. what memory cards can be used for the d3100?
    Melissa asked on
    1. The SD type (SD, SDHC & SDXC). The differences in the types are capacity and speed. The faster the card the faster pictures can be saved to the card and therefore the ultimate shooting rate. The faster cards are available at low prices, so don't be ripped off thinking you have to pay a lot for a fast top brand card!
      Antony replied on

  19. I wish to buy Nikon D3100 and am a first time buyer of SLR. How good is the picture quality in complete darkness outdoor? Do I need an extra flash gun or the built in flash is powerful and will do the job?
    Jawad asked on
    1. I havnt taken any pictures in total darkness sorry
I have taken lots of pictures in low light situations and got great results.
      Again nothing in total darkness
      Steve replied on

    2. i would say go for a pricer model. picture quality very soft
      james replied on

  20. I am planning to buy Nikon D3100 SLR. How good is the zoom lens 18-55 mm? Do I need to buy an additional lens? I am not a professional photographer and will be using it for domestic reasons.
    Jawad asked on
    1. The zoom is just what it is,neither a superzoom or telephoto.I think it is about 3x magnification. If you want more zoom you will have to buy another lense or get closer to what you are photographing.
Hope that helps.most of the below shot with d3100
      http://dogslow.smugmug.com/Pictureexperiments/Camera-Experiments/15373843_k9CfC#1150435177_R8b5u
      Steve replied on

    2. The supplied lens is fine, but I've bought an additional Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC, lens for extra range. The lens was quite expensive (£200) but worth it. Having said that, the supplied lens is better for close-up zooming!

      Margaret replied on

  21. which one is best nikon 3100 or nikon d-90 ?
    vijay asked on
    1. i think the d90,i find the 3100 has very soft pictures
      james replied on

    2. thats up to you
      Steve replied on

  22. How is the battery life on the d3100?
    Emily asked on
    1. Pretty good, compared to others I've used. Also, the battery doesn't take too long to charge.
      Margaret replied on

  23. Can you connect an external flash gun (non dedicated) ? I have a mamiya flash with sync lead\ hotshoe.
    Jim asked on
    1. not sure about this one but a old sb18 nikon works fine
      james replied on

  24. Hi, i am complete novice but want a decent easy to use camera to take pics of my daughter showjumping. Will this do the job?
    gaye asked on
    1. It certainly will! Very easy to use and great quality pictures. Auto mode will do all you require but if you want to use the other manual features they are described very well in the on screen guides.
      paul replied on

  25. Does it have a live view?
    Sitara asked on
    1. yes
      A verified owner replied on

    2. Yes. There is an option to operate it that way, but you lose the therough-lens spot focus information which is really useful. Only in video mode is this automatically the operation mode (of course). I find this camera incredibly quick to use in normal SLR mode and haven't found a situation yet where the live view is useful. It is simple point and shoot with no startup or delay to take picture.
      Antony replied on

  26. Can you please list all the accessories that come with this deal?I am having a little trouble confirming all the the accessories and just need someone to confirm these as I wish to order this ASAP.
    Syed asked on
    1. there are no accesories you get body, lense, strap, software cd ,usb cable, Lense cap
you do not get memory card.It takes fantastic pictures.I Have not been able to get good results from video with the kit lense
      Steve replied on

    2. rechargeable battery, strap,dvd, warrenty.
      james replied on

  27. How fast can it take photo's? i.e. Has it got to autofocus first then after a while it finally takes the photo like my current digital camera?
    Joe asked on
    1. You can switch autofocus off if you want to do it manually. However, the autofocus is very fast. Under normal lighting when you depress the button autofocus is practically instantaneous (done withing the time you can say the word "one"). There is a beep and in the viewfinder one or more of the various red spots flash to show on which object the focus was made. You then continue to press the shutter to take the photo. If you have the camera in hand you can flick the power on, zoom, focus and take a photo withing 1 sec when you get slick at it!
      Antony replied on

  28. For a first time slr user is the lense versitile enough for general alround use. Also is it interchangeable, does it have to be a nikon lens or any.

    Alex asked on
    1. The Lens is great. You can change it but it has to be a particular sort of lens.
This camera can only use lenses with an af motor built inside of the lens its self. This is not very common with other Nikons and could be classed as a slight disadvantage, however there is a good range of lenses with af motors built in.

      Hope this helps :)
      Robert replied on

  29. which is the best memory card for D3100
    joan asked on
    1. SDHC class 10 are common and cheap now. A lower class would probably be too slow for rapid shooting. I use a class 10 card without any trouble.
      Antony replied on

  30. hi can you tell me where i can find the cheapest "bundle" for the nikond3100, most include memory card and carrying case and tripod?
    jude asked on
    1. Jessops are doing good deals with twelve months interest free credit
      Steve replied on

    2. amazon
      james replied on

  31. i was wondering what the picture quality was like ?, is it worth the money, and does it take very high standard pictures ?, photographer worthy
    jemina asked on
    1. Trust me. Yes and yes!
OK, here's the background... when I were a lad I used SLRs with film... great quality etc... When digital cameras came around, quality was sacrificed for being able to take loads of pictures for no cost. Now, digital SLR is affordable.....
This Nikon had a great lens. Compared to a compact digital, the sharpness, colour clarity is superb. You have to compare the two to appreciate that it can be THAT much better than compact cameras.
Not only that, there are lots of "hidden" features. First, the lens is an "anti-shake" technology...Second, it is FAST.. from power up to take a picture... less than 1 sec.. (once you get slick with the right index finger).. that includes the full autofocus procedure... Third, dynamic range... you take a picture with a bright element - say a room with bright window in the background.. there is so much dynamic range compared to a compact that you can bring up the room and it is there....
I was in St. Petersburg (russia) a couple of weeks ago and someone took it off me and was doing a right David Bailey!
In summary, it is very easy to use, but gives you professional pictures... and I don't work for Nikon!

      Antony replied on

  32. what and how many accessories are coming in that?
Is battery rechargeable and charger is also include ?
If I want to buy an extra lens with that , than which lens you will recommend to me ??
I am intersted in 70-300mm lens. and what is price??
    Kartik asked on
    1. yes the battery is rechargeable ,yes a charger is included.I do not know enough about Lenses to recommend any lenses.
speak to a camera shop like Jessops for good advice, not Comet or PC World
      Steve replied on

    2. I got mine from Dixons i got the 200 zoom lens it was much cheeper than Joesps however they got me a macro cheeper than Dixons so you should look around and check prices.
      Cath replied on

  33. hey im going to be getting this camera and i cant wait!! but what lens does pc world offer with the D3100 is it the better model with VR? because jeesops sell it for same price with the VR lens.
    robertia asked on
    1. PC World supply the 18-55mm VR lens.
      Margaret replied on

    2. i bought the camera from dixons,it was 35 pounds cheaper. it had the vr lens.
      james replied on

  34. Maybe silly asking Nikon owners - but Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D - why would you recommend one over the other?
    Peter asked on
    1. I believe the D3100 to be a nicer camera package to
      use, its just peoples choice.
      Carl replied on

  35. Have you bought this camera with £40 cashback from Nikon? I'm curious as to whether this means actual cash or Nikon voucher, either would be great.
    Rochelle asked on
    1. Sorry, no I actually purchased it with Tesco vouchers
      Dave replied on

    2. I wanted to buy the camera using tesco voucher and it was advertised with £40 cash-back but the Tesco site said it was out of stock, i used the facility they have of emailing me when it became available i am still getting weekly emails to say it is still not in-stock. However the week after i had requested they email when they have stock i noticed the same camera and lens was now available but without the £40 cash-back, i bought it as my Tesco voucher value had been doubled and the date for use was due to expire. I was unable to find the camera any cheaper at the time but you can now exchange your Tesco vouchers to spend at Jessops and still get the £40 cash-back and it comes from NIKON in the form of a cheque.

    Derek asked on
    1. Hi Derek,
Personally IMHO there is only one way to find out which is best - reviews. The more the merrier. If you know your main area of photography i.e. portraiture, landscapes, sport, macro etc., then look for the model that gives the best results in that specific field. If you go to someone like Jessops (other stockists are available!), you SHOULD find that they will be able to demonstrate, and even set you up with a good package. My Nikon D3100 gives me a decent return for my money, and allows me to have more control than a basic point-and-shoot. (Having said that, with digital photography, good software packages will give as good results as pictures taken with expensive digital cameras in the majority of cases.) If you have any friends or relations with any of the models you are considering, just ask them if you can have a look at what they have produced - most photographers are only too keen to show off what they can do! 2. Hi Derek
My son purchased his Nikon D3100 from Jessops and was given very good advice from staff on hand. He was so delighted with his purchase and raved about it, that when we visited I tried it out. I have wanted a good camera for some time but like yourself was unsure what to get as there are so many on the market. I was delighted at the ease of use of this camera and the great quality of the photos. I had a few ideas of what I wanted from a camera, and a "must have" for me was that the camera had a view finder to look through as well as a screen, as with my old digital camera which was screen only, the object was not visible if the sun was very bright. I also wanted to be able to take instant photos, ie with a moving object you didn't actually get the shot you were planning on taking because of the time difference in the click and the actual picture being taken. Because this camera has the option to take continuous pictures you don't miss out when the object moves - ie animals, children etc. I haven't had chance to have a real play with my camera yet, but the times I have used it I have been totally impressed with this one. Happy Hunting!

    1. You'll just about manage it. I take close-ups of small objects. The autofocus will struggle, so you're best manually focusing when you get really close. Use external lighting or a mini lighting booth rather than the internal flash.

    Ilana asked on
    1. There are two lens that came with the package i bought - 18-55mm (f/3.5-5.6) and a 70-300mm (f/4-5.6). I could be wrong with the f stops as im a newbie to SLRs.

Some deals dont come with a lens and i had to be careful as some had made this mistake.
      Scott replied on

    2. The f-number is the focal length divided by the "effective" aperture diameter. It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, an important concept in photography.

    1. Hi Nick, The D3100 has may of the features that you are looking for, selftimer as with the D5000 that you mention. the camera has also a self help menu built into the camera that will assist with the operation. I have been using the camera and I feel that this is the best that you will find for the money spent unless you go up to the profesional standard cameras.

    1. hi, VR stands for Vibration Reduction when taking a shot. if you use a tripod its best to turn this off because it can in sometimes Add a small amount of blur to your image.

    2. Hi, Karen......
VR means Vibration Reduction, enables more flexible hand-held shooting and lets you use shutter speeds.
If you take picture using zoom hand shake may not give a clear image so VR system will help to take clear images....

    1. The lens that comes as standard is good enough for close ups, I recomend a polariser filter if you are taking shots outside.

      Steven replied on

    2. No not really. Its a good all round lens but, and it depends what you mean by close ups, it is limited to either macro (very close) or in a room type distance. You wont 'fill the frame' with a sports shot from the other side of the field. You will need something like a Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 di lens which will cost you about £132.00 Hope this helps. Ian

    Any ideas?
    Zahra asked on
    1. I'm really not the best person to ask. But my advice would be to learn on a film camera that would give your best grounding in photography. But if you already have that then the D3100 is a great camera, but it does lack on pro features. Some of the more advanced features are hidden in the menu or missing. A great quote i read recently 'the body serves the photographer and the lens serves the photograph' i couldn't agree more. Go to your nearest independent camera shop play with some, get what works for you and spend your money on lenses.

Hope that helps. But get better advice from a local independent retailer, go in and speak to them. You'll get honest and unbiased advice. [and I don't mean your local Jessops or Curry's ;)]

    Thanks!
    Matt asked on
    1. Hi
Yes I had the same confusion. But I have done some research after that. But in the end I decided to go for 3100. Remember 3000 is outdated version and 3100is the updated version and is the entry level from Nikon. It is 14.1 megapixel and captures HD quality videos. I would recommend you choose 3100. Bug you need to buy it quick because the cashback offer runs out on 31st July which you may be aware of. Also if you are buying online sign up for quidco.com and get cashback from there as well which I didn't know when I bought (I missed out a few quid). Also when I bought the camera from Tesco there was an offer for free camera bag. I don't know they still do it.
Best of luck with your purchase and let me know how you got on if you don't mind.

You can control both aperture and shutter speed individually or you can do both at the same time, using the mode dial on the camera. Most lenses also have a manual or auto focus option. 1. Well, the D5100 is technically better, but more expensive, so it depends upon budget and ultimately how critical or demanding you will be. The D3100 is damn good in its own right, so that may well be as far as you need to go for your type of photography. I've taken some great professional photos with the D3100 which would not be any better with the D5100. But the D5100 does have higher rapid frame fire rate and better battery life, so... tricky....

    1. Michelle,
I am not a beginner and formerly used a Nikon SLR with a 300mm lens. Obviously if you are really concerned and shooting semi professionally you might notice a difference. To me I get perfectly good photographs with both the VR & non VR even with the camera moving so I would not be concerned.

  67. I had an Olympus E-420 which has now died after only a year (if that) of service. The processing chip has packed-up and I am now looking for an SLR that is better and far more reliable than my Olympus was.

It always developed noise in certain apertures, lighting, and shutter speeds, etc. It also refused to focus on the subject at hand, but the background instead, and the colours came out either very tepid or over-bright and tacky. It was always over-exposing or under-exposing and by the end of the first year was just about ready to burn the damn thing!

I photograph horses and animals, always fast-moving, so I need a camera with reliable shutter speeds that don't induce noise all the time and actually work like they're supposed to. I also like taking scenery shots, using very slow shutter speeds, and capturing waterscapes.

Are Nikon as good as they claim?

There is an Auto option and Guide option which will take you step by step so that you can learn the better options and of course there is the manual set up where you can do your own preferred settings. I am new to the SLR and still learning but this camera is brilliant. Crystal clear and does everything you need it to.. There was no memory card with mine and the lens is the 18-55mm which is ok but the zoom doesnt really zoom that far.. The The camera give you edit options to trim so the photo can be closer or change filter options etc etc.. 2. the camera is great.... The only downfall for me personally is the 18-55mm lens.. Whilst it is brilliant for close work, portrait photos, landscape etc - for me personally the zoom doesn't stretch that far but thats where the option of buying the additional lens (55-200mm) which is more flexiable apparently?? I will find out once I can afford one unless lucky to get one for xmas!! But over-all - this camera is excellent - photos very sharp, most photos in Auto but if you go into the option Guide on the camera it will give you hints and tips on what settings for what effects etc.. I am new to the SLR world, love taking photographs but this camera is definately the best I was advised to by a lot of people.. Go for it! you wont be disapointed and checked out examples of photos on Flickr or Amazon.. Good luck.. and hope this helped.

  87. can you change the time it takes to take a photo - as in make it record everything it sees for like 30 seconds so you capture the blur on screen (like drawing a pic in sparklers, the blur of a car going past etc)?
I am torn between this and the Sony A35 for christmas, is the image quality good for this camera?
    Rachel asked on
    1. Of course you can change the shutter speed in manuel & S mode. To make moving stuffs blur, set a low shutter speed corresponding to the aperture. Nikon is like a bit pro, expensive but make its job what it's ment for. Sony is totaly consumer base.

    Good Quality?
    Harvey asked on
    1. Hi,

The video is very good quality considering it is a stills camera!
It is dependent on what you require the video for!
I took a few videos of family etc over Xmas and when watching them back on a 15.4" laptop screen the quality was actually quite surprising! It is full 1080p in my opinion!

You can record up to 10 minute video at a time!

I would advise looking to buy a couple of the San Disk extreme or extreme pro SDHC cards! 4gb is about 60 min pure video (in 10 min max sections) and costs you about £10. They do the larger cards too!

      I highly recommend this camera!

      Hope that helped!

Im doing some travelling from April onwards to Thailand etc and want a DSLR to take with me. Im a beginner at photography and just wondered if this camera would be any good to take with me just for basic shots and easy to carry around with me?

    Any advice would be great!
    Hayley asked on
    1. Hi Hayley, we bought this camera for our 15 year old daughter for Christmas. She has had a few basic lessons in phtography but is still a beginner. It's really easy to get started and to operate. It takes fantastic photos and unless you want to go into photography as a career i can't see any reason to buy anything more expensive. Two things I would say, Get the camera a few weeks early and get to know it (There's a inbuilt guide in it). We also bought the Tamron 70-300mm lens, something you might want to think about for those slightly further away shots you're bound to come across on your travels.
      Have a great time

    1. My daughter is doing Photography A Level and thinks it is excellent. Her brother has a Nikon D40 which we thought was good. The D3100 is better. It costs a bit more, I think we paid £399, but it takes good pictures and is worth the extra. Picture quality is good and when flattening images on photoshop the quality remains. My daughter recommends it!

  104. I was just wondering, not many people have mentioned the video on this and, as I want to use this instead of my rubbish compact camera, I wondered how good the video actually is (e.g quality of picture, sound quality etc.). Also is this camera good for "point and shoot" picures as well as well thought out shots? I want to know for definite how good this camera is before I buy it as it is quite expensive, especially for a 15 year old.

    Thank you!
    Ellie asked on
    1. Hi, the D3100 has a good video capability and will record in full HD (1080p), switching to video mode is just a case of engaging live view (1 switch) and then pressing the record button so it takes a couple of seconds. Having said that there are limitations, the in-built microphone is mono and there is no option to add an additional microphone. The internal mic also captures some of the cameras 'internal' noises in quiet scenes, e.g. focusing, etc. Also, as it uses the MOV file type for movies the file size is kimited to 4GB or about 10 mins of HD shooting.

It is excellent for point and shoot photos and has a 3 frames per second 'auto' mode allowing continuous auto shooting, this came in especially handy at Seaworld in Florida as I was able to take multiple shots of the killer whales 'in action' and then choose the frames I wanted.

Read a Digital Photography review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3100/15 this also has some movie samples to view, hope this helps

    1. Not sure how to post photos on a review, however the wide angle setting on the camera is 18mm, which is a good wide angle lens, i have just had a look at my kitchen with the lens on 18mm and you can see loads, i really dont think you need to worry, get the camera, you will happy with it.
