- Good points:
- Excellent little SLR Camera, so easy to use and navigate around the features and the quality of pictures for the price is outstanding. I bought the kit and a fixed lens, changing them is easy. I bought this as my Nikon D40 was 5 years old and starting to become unreliable and I don''t regret it
- Bad points:
- Due to its compact size for an SLR camera it can feel a little unbalanced when you put larger lens on it. However I will be purchasing a battery grip to counteract this minor niggle

- Good points:
- Loads of features, this camera has point and shoot capabilities, for those times when you need to just switch it on and snap away but also has all the manual settings for experimenting with different photo techniques.
- Bad points:
- The bundled lens is not the best, so you are best to get a different one for getting the best from the camera.

- Good points:
- Being a keen amateur I bought the camera as a present for someone who wanted to take up photography. I wanted a camera that would encourage and evelop photographic interest. It was ordered and arrived in good time and well packed. In my opinion this is now a competitivley priced entry level DSLR camera with lots of features. The help menu guides the beginner from point and shoot through to developing alternative photographic options. For the more advanced camera user there are plenty of creative opportunities with this camera. The integral flash is useful for fill in flash techniques. The supplied zoom lens is useful. With the discounts offered on this camera in my opinion it is a good buy.
- Bad points:
- Being Nikon additional bolt on goodies such as a speedlite flash are a bit more expensive than rivals.

Digital Cameras Buyers' GuideManufacturer's Description
Nikon D3100
The Nikon D3100 is a 14.2 Megapixel DSLR camera with high sensitivity CMOS sensor, Live View, Full HD Movies and helpful Guide Mode.
14 Megapixel CMOS Sensor
The CMOS sensor housed within the Nikon D3100 has 14.2 effective megapixels for outstandingly sharp images. The high sensitivity of the sensor means that up to ISO 3200 values are within the normal range and can even be extended to ISO 12,800 in HI 2 Mode. The EXPEED 2 Engine keeps noise to a minimum and allows for fast response times.
Guide Mode
The improved Guide Mode on the D3100 is full of helpful navigational tools and graphic illustrations of camera settings known as “Assist Images” – for example showing the effect of wider apertures on depth of field and overall sharpness.
Full HD D-Movie
Record full 1080 HD movies with the D3100 with the option also to record in standard definition. The AF-F (Full Time Servo AF) enables continuous focusing in Live View while recording movies. This removes the need to keep the shutter release half pressed to allow the camera to focus. Movie editing is also possible on-camera.
Scene Auto Selector
When Auto mode or Auto (no flash) mode is selected, the Scene Auto Selector chooses from Portrait, Landscape, Closeup and Night Portrait modes automatically.
Additional Features
Face Detection for up to 35 faces in a frame
Independent Movie Record Button and Release Mode Selector
CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) for HDMI connection – allows remote controlled playback of images and movies when connected to a HD TV.
Improved Exposure Compensation algorithm
View NX2 Software included
11 Point AF
3.0” LCD Monitor
3fps Continuous Shooting

Hi, can you please let me know what accessories comes with in the box? Does it come with a neck strap? Thanks
-
It comes with a neck strap, charger, lense cap, basically everything you need comes with it.
-
-
Do you think this camera is suitable for a first time DSLR user.
-
I'm a 1st time user myself and yes I would recommend it. It's very straight forward to use and has auto mode for first shots that won't dissapoint you and progressively learn how to use manual functions
-
its my first dslr,I used a canon G9 for three years.
the 3100 is very easy to use .In auto it is just like a point n shoot.
using the modes: portrait scene macro etc easy to use.
I have had mine a few weeks now and love it.
-
-
Hi there I want to know which slr to go for, as this is my first slr.I dont mind any slr camera as far as its easy to use and v v v v good picture quality
-
this is a very open question, some people like Levi jeans some like Wranglers its what suits you.
All I can say is I read all the revues in all the mags and all of them rated the 3100 very highly.
Since I have got my camera I have been amazed by the picture quality
the ease of use,you can fire away in auto and get instant lovely results.
You can use the macro portrait panorama modes ,same thing lovely results
you can boost colours from the menu's in the camera if you wish as opposed to using external software.
low light photography not using the flash gives very good results
would I buy this camera again YES -
Friends of mine having canons different models but they where shock of the picture quality, that was my very good choice and I would highly recommend this slr!!
-
-
does it come with a battery, or do u have to buy that seperately???
-
Battery included
-
It comes with battery and charger.
-
-
i have been using an old SLR pentax camera were i have to pay to develop photos and i am looking for an SLR that gives results instantly without loosing the quality as well as being lightweight as I am never without my camera. will the Nixon D3100 do the job ?? or
-
I have, this evening, taken a lovely sunset shot, & without editing it, sent it to the local newspaper. I was really pleased with the picture, much better than my old camera, which was a Fujufilm S9600, looking like a DSLR but in fact was a compact. The Nikon D3100 is lighter than the Fujifilm, & although I haven't taken many photos yet (weather been rubbish!) I am very pleased with those I have taken. Use a USB lead & you can put the pictures straight onto your computer, then do what you want with them. Print those you want to frame, give someone etc, & keep the rest for whatever!
-
Pentax is absolutely rubish compare to D3100, I'm so happy I bought this camera, quality of the picture is just unbelievable and like me u r not gonna be disappointed.
-
-
If you wanted a professional quality sharp picture of a piece of furniture, taken in poorish lighting, would this be the camera to get it for you?-
The camera seems to work well in low light conditions, and the images are of good quality. I'd be reluctant to call them "professional" as they are not as high quality as much more expensive cameras such as the D3X etc. This is an example from the camera shot in very low light:

Hope this helps.

Hi looking to buy my first DSLR camera. So far all feedback postive, regarding picture quality. Is it easy to use, & how is the quality of HD video, as no one has mentioned this so far
Thanks-
I haven't had my camera long, & not used the video much, but what I have taken is very good. The camera is very easy to use. It has an on-screen guide if you forget how to set it at the time you need to take a picture.
-
-
Is this a good camera to buy if you only use it occasionally and for videoing stuff? My Canon IXUS 55 has recently broken, and im not sure if upgrading to a camera like this is a good idea?
-
I think is good idea cos is very good camera and if u even use it occasionally u still need as good quality as u can and if can buy it just buy it I'm very happy
-
-
Does the Nikon D3100 Come with a USB ? Or do i have to purchase it seperate.
-
No lead I'm afraid
-
-
Does the Nikon D3100 have a sports mode? Since I am often asked to photo football matches for my school. I also have to photo other events such as sports day and musical events, will this camera support this?
-
Yes Sports mode,I use it for photographing low light rock gigs with fantastic results
Sport mode very good
-
-
After looking at all the previously asked questions and their responses I have gathered that the picture quality is very good. Can someone please let me know more about the quality and ease of use of the HD video.
Thanks-
The quality of HD video is very good but its quite hard to focus on the subject in bright sunshine as you are using the screen as opposed to the viewfinder
-
-
did the camera come with flash anf cover
-
Yes the camera has a built in Flash but no cover
-
Yes, there is a pop-up flash built in (just above the Nikon logo). It charges instantaneously so in auto mode it kicks in immediately whenever needed.
The camera doesn't come with a case though....
-
-
which is the best bag to carry d3100 plus telephoto lens 55 300
-
I currently don't have a suitable bag for carrying the camera plus extras. The bag that came as part of the kit I bought is pretty useless as it is tiny. Hope someone else can help as I am looking for something similar to yourself, that can also hold filters etc.
-
-
what is the charge time for the battery and how long does the charge last when taking normal non-flash photo's
-
first charge takes a little bit longer. the battery will last long enough for a full wedding with flash.
-
-
how long does the battery last ?
-
I shot 369 pic and still got about 20 % left
-
-
what memory cards can be used for the d3100?
-
The SD type (SD, SDHC & SDXC). The differences in the types are capacity and speed. The faster the card the faster pictures can be saved to the card and therefore the ultimate shooting rate. The faster cards are available at low prices, so don't be ripped off thinking you have to pay a lot for a fast top brand card!
-
-
I wish to buy Nikon D3100 and am a first time buyer of SLR. How good is the picture quality in complete darkness outdoor? Do I need an extra flash gun or the built in flash is powerful and will do the job?
-
I havnt taken any pictures in total darkness sorry
I have taken lots of pictures in low light situations and got great results.
Again nothing in total darkness -
i would say go for a pricer model. picture quality very soft
-
-
I am planning to buy Nikon D3100 SLR. How good is the zoom lens 18-55 mm? Do I need to buy an additional lens? I am not a professional photographer and will be using it for domestic reasons.
-
The zoom is just what it is,neither a superzoom or telephoto.I think it is about 3x magnification. If you want more zoom you will have to buy another lense or get closer to what you are photographing.
Hope that helps.most of the below shot with d3100
http://dogslow.smugmug.com/Pictureexperiments/Camera-Experiments/15373843_k9CfC#1150435177_R8b5u -
The supplied lens is fine, but I've bought an additional Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC, lens for extra range. The lens was quite expensive (£200) but worth it. Having said that, the supplied lens is better for close-up zooming!
-
-
which one is best nikon 3100 or nikon d-90 ?
-
i think the d90,i find the 3100 has very soft pictures
-
thats up to you
-
-
How is the battery life on the d3100?
-
Pretty good, compared to others I've used. Also, the battery doesn't take too long to charge.
-
-
Can you connect an external flash gun (non dedicated) ? I have a mamiya flash with sync lead\ hotshoe.
-
not sure about this one but a old sb18 nikon works fine
-
-
Hi, i am complete novice but want a decent easy to use camera to take pics of my daughter showjumping. Will this do the job?
-
It certainly will! Very easy to use and great quality pictures. Auto mode will do all you require but if you want to use the other manual features they are described very well in the on screen guides.
-
-
Does it have a live view?
-
yes
-
Yes. There is an option to operate it that way, but you lose the therough-lens spot focus information which is really useful. Only in video mode is this automatically the operation mode (of course). I find this camera incredibly quick to use in normal SLR mode and haven't found a situation yet where the live view is useful. It is simple point and shoot with no startup or delay to take picture.
-
-
Can you please list all the accessories that come with this deal?I am having a little trouble confirming all the the accessories and just need someone to confirm these as I wish to order this ASAP.
-
there are no accesories you get body, lense, strap, software cd ,usb cable, Lense cap
you do not get memory card.It takes fantastic pictures.I Have not been able to get good results from video with the kit lense -
rechargeable battery, strap,dvd, warrenty.
-
-
How fast can it take photo's? i.e. Has it got to autofocus first then after a while it finally takes the photo like my current digital camera?
-
You can switch autofocus off if you want to do it manually. However, the autofocus is very fast. Under normal lighting when you depress the button autofocus is practically instantaneous (done withing the time you can say the word "one"). There is a beep and in the viewfinder one or more of the various red spots flash to show on which object the focus was made. You then continue to press the shutter to take the photo. If you have the camera in hand you can flick the power on, zoom, focus and take a photo withing 1 sec when you get slick at it!
-
-
For a first time slr user is the lense versitile enough for general alround use. Also is it interchangeable, does it have to be a nikon lens or any.
-
The Lens is great. You can change it but it has to be a particular sort of lens.
This camera can only use lenses with an af motor built inside of the lens its self. This is not very common with other Nikons and could be classed as a slight disadvantage, however there is a good range of lenses with af motors built in.
Hope this helps :)

which is the best memory card for D3100
-
SDHC class 10 are common and cheap now. A lower class would probably be too slow for rapid shooting. I use a class 10 card without any trouble.
-
-
hi can you tell me where i can find the cheapest "bundle" for the nikond3100, most include memory card and carrying case and tripod?
-
Jessops are doing good deals with twelve months interest free credit
-
amazon
-
-
i was wondering what the picture quality was like ?, is it worth the money, and does it take very high standard pictures ?, photographer worthy
-
Trust me. Yes and yes!
OK, here's the background... when I were a lad I used SLRs with film... great quality etc... When digital cameras came around, quality was sacrificed for being able to take loads of pictures for no cost. Now, digital SLR is affordable.....
This Nikon had a great lens. Compared to a compact digital, the sharpness, colour clarity is superb. You have to compare the two to appreciate that it can be THAT much better than compact cameras.
Not only that, there are lots of "hidden" features. First, the lens is an "anti-shake" technology...Second, it is FAST.. from power up to take a picture... less than 1 sec.. (once you get slick with the right index finger).. that includes the full autofocus procedure... Third, dynamic range... you take a picture with a bright element - say a room with bright window in the background.. there is so much dynamic range compared to a compact that you can bring up the room and it is there....
I was in St. Petersburg (russia) a couple of weeks ago and someone took it off me and was doing a right David Bailey!
In summary, it is very easy to use, but gives you professional pictures... and I don't work for Nikon!
-
-
what and how many accessories are coming in that?
Is battery rechargeable and charger is also include ?
If I want to buy an extra lens with that , than which lens you will recommend to me ??
I am intersted in 70-300mm lens. and what is price??-
yes the battery is rechargeable ,yes a charger is included.I do not know enough about Lenses to recommend any lenses.
speak to a camera shop like Jessops for good advice, not Comet or PC World -
I got mine from Dixons i got the 200 zoom lens it was much cheeper than Joesps however they got me a macro cheeper than Dixons so you should look around and check prices.
-
-
hey im going to be getting this camera and i cant wait!! but what lens does pc world offer with the D3100 is it the better model with VR? because jeesops sell it for same price with the VR lens.
-
PC World supply the 18-55mm VR lens.
-
i bought the camera from dixons,it was 35 pounds cheaper. it had the vr lens.
-
-
Maybe silly asking Nikon owners - but Nikon D3100 or Canon EOS 550D - why would you recommend one over the other?
-
I believe the D3100 to be a nicer camera package to
use, its just peoples choice.
-
-
Have you bought this camera with £40 cashback from Nikon? I'm curious as to whether this means actual cash or Nikon voucher, either would be great.
-
Sorry, no I actually purchased it with Tesco vouchers
-
I wanted to buy the camera using tesco voucher and it was advertised with £40 cash-back but the Tesco site said it was out of stock, i used the facility they have of emailing me when it became available i am still getting weekly emails to say it is still not in-stock. However the week after i had requested they email when they have stock i noticed the same camera and lens was now available but without the £40 cash-back, i bought it as my Tesco voucher value had been doubled and the date for use was due to expire. I was unable to find the camera any cheaper at the time but you can now exchange your Tesco vouchers to spend at Jessops and still get the £40 cash-back and it comes from NIKON in the form of a cheque.

First DSLR, general use but keen to learn.
D3100, EOS 1100D or Sony a390? Confused by the differences so any help appreciated-
Hi Derek,
Personally IMHO there is only one way to find out which is best - reviews. The more the merrier. If you know your main area of photography i.e. portraiture, landscapes, sport, macro etc., then look for the model that gives the best results in that specific field. If you go to someone like Jessops (other stockists are available!), you SHOULD find that they will be able to demonstrate, and even set you up with a good package. My Nikon D3100 gives me a decent return for my money, and allows me to have more control than a basic point-and-shoot. (Having said that, with digital photography, good software packages will give as good results as pictures taken with expensive digital cameras in the majority of cases.) If you have any friends or relations with any of the models you are considering, just ask them if you can have a look at what they have produced - most photographers are only too keen to show off what they can do! REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW. HTH -
Hi Derek
My son purchased his Nikon D3100 from Jessops and was given very good advice from staff on hand. He was so delighted with his purchase and raved about it, that when we visited I tried it out. I have wanted a good camera for some time but like yourself was unsure what to get as there are so many on the market. I was delighted at the ease of use of this camera and the great quality of the photos. I had a few ideas of what I wanted from a camera, and a "must have" for me was that the camera had a view finder to look through as well as a screen, as with my old digital camera which was screen only, the object was not visible if the sun was very bright. I also wanted to be able to take instant photos, ie with a moving object you didn't actually get the shot you were planning on taking because of the time difference in the click and the actual picture being taken. Because this camera has the option to take continuous pictures you don't miss out when the object moves - ie animals, children etc. I haven't had chance to have a real play with my camera yet, but the times I have used it I have been totally impressed with this one. Happy Hunting!

-
Hello is it good for astrophotography, used with a telescope that is
-
have nvere tried sorry
-
-
I need to take macro / close-up (very close-up) photos of jewelry. Do you thin think that D3100 is a good option for such photography. What lenses should I find?
-
You'll just about manage it. I take close-ups of small objects. The autofocus will struggle, so you're best manually focusing when you get really close. Use external lighting or a mini lighting booth rather than the internal flash.
-
-
What exactly comes with it. Like does it come with a strap ect ect :) And are there any other better deals like this anywhere else????
-
you get Nickon strap lense cap front n back Nikon software USB lead.
-
-
What is the f stop on the lens that comes with this camera?
-
There are two lens that came with the package i bought - 18-55mm (f/3.5-5.6) and a 70-300mm (f/4-5.6). I could be wrong with the f stops as im a newbie to SLRs.
Some deals dont come with a lens and i had to be careful as some had made this mistake. -
The f-number is the focal length divided by the "effective" aperture diameter. It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, an important concept in photography.

-
what the meaning of non-VR, and what the different between Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm II which the price is 399.00
-
Non VR means that the lens it's supplied with doesn't have vibration reduction. But as the lens is fairly lightwieght it's not an issue unless you have shaky hands. No idea about the other camera.
-
-
is the zoom good on it?
-
The zoom is fine for landscapes and portrait, I have not really tried it for for other subjects as yet.
I hope this helps. -
Yes it's good...i can send you a pic of various things i pictured from some distance away and you can see for yourself..just let me have your e mail address ...Ken

Hi, i currently have a D3000 and looking to upgrade to one that has HD video, is there any extras minus the video and mp compared to the D3000?
Also has it got self timer shutter [ Eg set it to how long u want your exposer and it takes pictures every 30 seconds or so with out having to touch the shutter button like the d5000 and higher cameras have]?
Many Thanks Nick-
Hi Nick, The D3100 has may of the features that you are looking for, selftimer as with the D5000 that you mention. the camera has also a self help menu built into the camera that will assist with the operation. I have been using the camera and I feel that this is the best that you will find for the money spent unless you go up to the profesional standard cameras.
I hope this helps in your choice.
Many thanks Carl

-
Is this a good SLR? I'm doing photography in collage and I was wondering if this camera was really good for using?
-
It is very good and excellent for beginners learning the art of photography. If your already competent and advanced you might not need this type of camera.
-
The D3100 is a good camera for someone beginning photography, it is also ideal for intermediate use. It will take you a long way through your college course.
-
-
Hi I'm a newbie and interested in purchasing my first DSLR camera and came across this term VR and was wondering. What does VR lens stand for and is there any difference between a non VR lens camera?
-
hi, VR stands for Vibration Reduction when taking a shot. if you use a tripod its best to turn this off because it can in sometimes Add a small amount of blur to your image.
I also am a newbie and the Nikon D3100 is a great starter dslr. check out froknowsphoto.com for beginner help
thanks -
Hi, Karen......
VR means Vibration Reduction, enables more flexible hand-held shooting and lets you use shutter speeds.
If you take picture using zoom hand shake may not give a clear image so VR system will help to take clear images....
Thanks

-
how come the nikon remote dosnt work with this camra but does with the d40
-
I havn't tried remote, but D3100 is having a self-shoot mode which helps in taking own pics. hope it would help...
-
-
is this lens good enough to get good close ups from other side of sports field ?
-
The lens that comes as standard is good enough for close ups, I recomend a polariser filter if you are taking shots outside.
-
No not really. Its a good all round lens but, and it depends what you mean by close ups, it is limited to either macro (very close) or in a room type distance. You wont 'fill the frame' with a sports shot from the other side of the field. You will need something like a Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 di lens which will cost you about £132.00 Hope this helps. Ian

-
I'm starting my course in Photography in September and not sure which camera would be the best choice. I want a good camera so I don't have to upgrade when I start doing professional shoots but I also don't want to spend too much money on my first camera.
Any ideas?-
I'm really not the best person to ask. But my advice would be to learn on a film camera that would give your best grounding in photography. But if you already have that then the D3100 is a great camera, but it does lack on pro features. Some of the more advanced features are hidden in the menu or missing. A great quote i read recently 'the body serves the photographer and the lens serves the photograph' i couldn't agree more. Go to your nearest independent camera shop play with some, get what works for you and spend your money on lenses.
Hope that helps. But get better advice from a local independent retailer, go in and speak to them. You'll get honest and unbiased advice. [and I don't mean your local Jessops or Curry's ;)]

Hey
Looking at buying my first SLR camera and I'm currently stuck debating between the Nikon D3000 and the D3100. There is a bit of a price difference and I was wondering is it worth while splashing out that bit extra for the D3100?
Thanks!-
Hi
Yes I had the same confusion. But I have done some research after that. But in the end I decided to go for 3100. Remember 3000 is outdated version and 3100is the updated version and is the entry level from Nikon. It is 14.1 megapixel and captures HD quality videos. I would recommend you choose 3100. Bug you need to buy it quick because the cashback offer runs out on 31st July which you may be aware of. Also if you are buying online sign up for quidco.com and get cashback from there as well which I didn't know when I bought (I missed out a few quid). Also when I bought the camera from Tesco there was an offer for free camera bag. I don't know they still do it.
Best of luck with your purchase and let me know how you got on if you don't mind.
Anil -
The technology of the D3100 is cutting edge when compared with the D3000. I got the £40 cash back from Nikon & a frre bagwhen bought at Tesco

-
does this camrea have manual focus on video mode and picture mode?
-
Hi Ben, this camera definitely has auto and manual focus options. You can control both aperture and shutter speed individually or you can do both at the same time, using the mode dial on the camera. Most lenses also have a manual or auto focus option. Videos can be controlled manually but when this option was tried it was difficult to do, but I am a beginner.
-
-
Is the Nikon D3100 worth the additional money over a Nikon D3000 if you don't really care if it has a video mode? Many people say if you don't want a video recorder then the extra money is not worth it as the D3100 is not any better than the earlier and cheaper D 3ooo model. I only want it for photographs as I have a camcorder.
-
Hi, I am not able to say as i have only just got the D3100 this year from having a fuji. I have not used the video on mine but its there. I love my camera i would recommend it to anyone but there is extra costs involved when buying lenses so be awere.
The D3100 has a self teaching screen which is good.
Sorry i have not been much help, it all depends on what you want to acheive with your camera.
Good luck -
You may have answered your own question - with the D3100 you can switch from stills to movie at the press of a button - you may rue the day of not having this facility immediately at hand - but it is your choice!
-
-
how many lens are avaible for nikon d3100 ?
-
All Nikor lenses prefix AF-S and AF-1 will work with autofocus Also G or D AF Nikor, PC-E nikor AI-P Nikor all other AF Nikor (except lenses for NikonF3AF). But apart from the AF-S and AF-1 lenses the rest will only work with manual focus

could u please help me actually i never use slr cameras before but i research on internet about slr cameras according to my knowledge which got from my research nikon d3100 is best slr for beginer and its cheaper than other slr cameras so plz kindly help me about this cuz im planing to buy nikon d3100 .......can i use nikon d3100 as a telephotography?thankxxxx
-
Telephotography. Presumably you mean to us attached to a suitable telescope. As D3100 will attach to any Nikor lens any telecope with a Nikon adapter would be suitable. Depending on what you photograph I would think no exposure problems under the 30 second the camera can cope with but if using for astronomy some experimentation would be required. Hope this helps.

-
hiya i have got d50 and wonder if d3100 better than d50,i use d50 for wedding.and wanting to get another nikon,i do like this d3100.plus can i use d3100 lenses on my d50.i like this due to be good price
-
I can't compare to D50 as my previous digital ones were point and shoot and only used film SLR's before but there is plenty info on Google. The D3100 lenses are AF-S and AF-I and have the auto focus motor in the lens and I'm unsure about the D50 set up. I find the D3100 a breeze to use in any mode so suggest you get down a camera shop and get your hands on one
-
-
ive never used a digital slr, but i love photography and want to get started, is it good for someone like me? or shall i start off with a didgital camera instead
-
This is a great camera for anyone. Superb quality images. easy to use yet has all the features for when you become more advanced.
Hope that helps. -
I agree with what Graham said, the camera has an automatic mode so you could use that to start with, after you've read through the manual though I'm sure you'll start to use the other modes on there :) it's a brilliant camera, so easy to use and actually i think you'll learn a lot about it very quickly just by reading the manual!
-
-
I have got a fuji HS 10 is it worth changing it for a nikon D3100 will i get any better photos i like taking wildlife, birds, flowers the photos i take are good but the birds i can never seem to be near enough and they dont crop in very well.
-
Would recommend the Nikon D3100 have taken some excellent shots of wildlife its a good camera simple to use
-
-
Does it have self timer
-
Yes it does - a 10 second one: and 2 secs before the shutter is fired- the self timer light flashes.
Hope this helps.
-
-
Nikon D3100 or NIKON D5100 ? Thanks!
-
Well, the D5100 is technically better, but more expensive, so it depends upon budget and ultimately how critical or demanding you will be. The D3100 is damn good in its own right, so that may well be as far as you need to go for your type of photography. I've taken some great professional photos with the D3100 which would not be any better with the D5100. But the D5100 does have higher rapid frame fire rate and better battery life, so... tricky....
-
-
How is it in macro mode
-
It's great. I really like close up photography, and you can make amazing pictures with this camera when it's in macro mode.
-
-
is it worth buying a flash gun ? and does it come with a protective filter thankyou.?
-
yes a flash is always a good buy,no filter
-

As a beginner is it a big deal that the 55-200mm is non VR?? I am trying to make sure that I get the correct equipment and ultimately best price. I found a deal quoting the twin lens with VR on both lenses - it was described in full as AF-S DX 18-55mm and 55-200mm. I assume this is the standard format?
I was almost ready to purchase the d3100 twin lens bundle package but a friend pointed out the non VR on the second lens and has placed some doubt in my mind...
Some advice would be appreciated.-
Michelle,
I am not a beginner and formerly used a Nikon SLR with a 300mm lens. Obviously if you are really concerned and shooting semi professionally you might notice a difference. To me I get perfectly good photographs with both the VR & non VR even with the camera moving so I would not be concerned.
-
Michelle,
I purchased the Nikon D3100 knowing the kit that came with included the 18-55mm VR and the non-VR 55-200mm. I have no real problem using the non Vr lens, I just feel that it would have been a better package with the 55-200mm VR included. The Nikon D3100 is a great camera, so don't be put off.
-
-
can you take photos of yourself with friends without a tripod at arm length and it will still auto focus?
-
yes
-
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? no
-
-
Hi, I currently have a Nikon SLR and I'm planing to upgrade to a D3100. Will the lens I'm using on my SLR interchange between the D3100 and my current Nikon FM SLR? The lens I have is a Nikon AF Nikkor.
-
Don't know sorry
-
-
is this a good camera for a 13 year old?
-
It's a great camera for any age, at your age you will have no problem with it at all, enjoy
-
-
am i getting the most out of my money, or is there another camera for a similer price but with better features and functions?
-
I'm very happy with the 3100, however, the reviews on the Sony Alpha 35 seem to suggest that the 3100 has a serious rival. Check out the reviews!
-
I got D3100 because my wife had the D5ooo thats why i purchased that one what i like about it is its got the guide mode which helps you with the setting until you get used to using a DSLR and i must admit i cant fault it
Im sure you can get better but may cost abit more but i just love and i'm sure i will have hours of fun
Hope this helps -
this is by far the best camera in its price range and unless you prefer
"canon" and would like a 500D this is the one for you. the D5100 Nikon is more expensive and a bit better due to its flip out screen but if its image quality you want there is little to nothing different between d5100 and d3100. I would strongly recommend Nikon!!
Hope this Helps.

-
I'm 13 and am going to Kenya so I would like a great pro cam 4 my holidays. Would this be ideal and do you know any other great cams up 2 300 pounds
-
Hi Will
I have only just got this camera, so not that experienced yet, but it seems great so far. Just be aware that it does not have much of a zoom which might be a problem on your trip - you would need a 70-300mm lens for that
Enjoy your holiday
James -
yes this would be a great camera although i would upgrade to the 55-200mm or above lens because this would have a better zoom if you intend on taking pictures of animals from far away. when using manual focus a green light in the viewfinder will appear to show you when it is in focus, also the movie feature is great for HD video up to 10mins at a time. an 8 gig memory card is ideal aswell also try www.froknowsphoto.com for photo tips
-
For the price this is a great camera. I would invest in an extra battery if you are going to Kenya. Just in case one went flat whilst you were away.
-
-
I had an Olympus E-420 which has now died after only a year (if that) of service. The processing chip has packed-up and I am now looking for an SLR that is better and far more reliable than my Olympus was.
It always developed noise in certain apertures, lighting, and shutter speeds, etc. It also refused to focus on the subject at hand, but the background instead, and the colours came out either very tepid or over-bright and tacky. It was always over-exposing or under-exposing and by the end of the first year was just about ready to burn the damn thing!
I photograph horses and animals, always fast-moving, so I need a camera with reliable shutter speeds that don't induce noise all the time and actually work like they're supposed to. I also like taking scenery shots, using very slow shutter speeds, and capturing waterscapes.
Are Nikon as good as they claim?
P.S Excuse the stupid e-mail address, it was the only one I was allowed. Sigh.-
Emma,
I have had my D3100 since May this year and have found it to be an excellant choice. It will do all that you you have mentioned in your email and more. it is ideal for beginners and intermediate photographers.
There are a couple of books on the camera which I purchased from amazon which may be of interest to you before you actually make a final decission.
Good luck.

-
Hi there im looking to get the d3100 and ive noticed in a previous question that it does not come with a usb . are they easy to get or only online and what sorts of prices ?
-
There is no USB cable with the pack but you can buy one.I had one from a fuji camera that fitted and it works fine. If you look at the online manual, on the numbered sketch of the camera the USB port is no. 24.
-
-
Hi this is more of a suggestion rather that a question, pleople are saying they wish the D3100 had a flip out LCD screen, well you can get a Flipbac 3" Angle Viewfinder which may assist and do the same job for less. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001QA4UKO/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk
-
Quite happy without the flip out screen.
-
-
Hi I currently have a Fujifilm Finepix s2800hd bridge camera and Im thinking of upgrading to a D3100. The bridge camera has a 18x Optical Zoom. What kind of lense would i need to get to achieve the same sort of zoom range.
-
I'm sorry I'm unsure.
Hope you find the answer -
I'm sorry I'm unsure.
Hope you find the answer -
Hi D3100 comes in two flavours when you first buy it from Jessops. One with 18-55 and another with 55-200 x lenses, both are good in their own perspectives, but I will strongly recommend 55-200 x lense set which is much more higher than the one which you currently own and also it's best in result in terms of quality of picture. Hope it would help otherwise resend your new query.

-
I am an enthuastic but very amateur photographer who wants to take photos on my cruise excursions eg Athens. Will this camera take clear shots of scenery & ancient monuments etc.from a distance.? If not can you recommend? (I am a pensioner so can,t go mad on price)
-
Hi. This camera will take as good a photo as you or I can generate. I suggest you buy a book by Lee Frost called Teach Yourself Photgraphy. You can buy 2nd hand on ebay. The camera will certainly take good scenery shots but has a limited zoom function (requires another lense) for long shots up close. Whilst the camera has a full auto mode I stronglt suggest you get to grips with using it in Aperature mode before you go on your trip. Enjoy & good luck. Ian
-
-
What is a difference between nikon d3100 and d5100??Is it worth spending £300 more?Thank you
-
Not much I would suggest. If you can afford to invest a further £300 I would suggest buying the D3100 and buying a couple of lenses. The lenses make the camera. I would recommend a Nikon 50mm F1.8 DAF £109 (portrait) & a Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6 di £132.99 (zoom) but neither are essential first off. A good book is Teach Yourself photography by Lee Evans. Enjoy! Ian
-
-
does this camera have single movement panoramic mode ?
-
Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that one yet as I am still exploring the many functions it has.
-
Nope
-
-
What is the fastest and slowest shutter speed for this camera? And does it come with a memory card? This might not make sense, I'm a complete beginner. Thanks very much.
-
Hi Kitty, so am I and, having looked up the user's manual I don't know re. the shutter speed as there are a number of choices you can make to slow/speed up the shutter speed. All I am doing at the moment is choosing 'easy' pointing and clicking - great pictures.
My purchase through the Tesco website included a memory card, carrying case and small tripod but I don't know if that would be the case if you purchased elsewhere. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful re. the shutter speed. -
Hiya... I dont know reference the shutter speed but you have so many options on the camera that whatever speed you need the camera to operate on I am sure you will find it.. There is an Auto option and Guide option which will take you step by step so that you can learn the better options and of course there is the manual set up where you can do your own preferred settings. I am new to the SLR and still learning but this camera is brilliant. Crystal clear and does everything you need it to.. There was no memory card with mine and the lens is the 18-55mm which is ok but the zoom doesnt really zoom that far.. The The camera give you edit options to trim so the photo can be closer or change filter options etc etc.. I did alot of research before buying the camera and found Amazon helpful although word of mouth too.. This camera is a great camera and dont think you would be dissapointed. Hope this helps?
-
-
im planning to buy a DSLR cameram to start of do professional photography. is this a good camera.
-
hi,i had before canon 350D,and i can tell it is much better.it is easy to use ,and very good quality photos.i'am happy with Nikon, and by the way it is not the camera who is doing the photos ;))) good luck,i did help a bit.
-
the camera is great.... The only downfall for me personally is the 18-55mm lens.. Whilst it is brilliant for close work, portrait photos, landscape etc - for me personally the zoom doesn't stretch that far but thats where the option of buying the additional lens (55-200mm) which is more flexiable apparently?? I will find out once I can afford one unless lucky to get one for xmas!! But over-all - this camera is excellent - photos very sharp, most photos in Auto but if you go into the option Guide on the camera it will give you hints and tips on what settings for what effects etc.. I am new to the SLR world, love taking photographs but this camera is definately the best I was advised to by a lot of people.. Go for it! you wont be disapointed and checked out examples of photos on Flickr or Amazon.. Good luck.. and hope this helped.
-
Hiya! I know very little about dslr cameras but the nikon d3100 is gooood! The HD video recording is very good too, includes sound which i was suprised at. But overall I'd recommend this camera. It has a guide setting aswell, easy to use etc etc. Do it! :D
-
-
im looking to buy my first DSLR camera and planning on using it at sports events eg. Formula 1 and Football matches, ill probably take it to a party every now and then as well. i was just wondering if this would be a good camera for a beginner and and these events?
Any help would be much appreciated.-
My honest opinion is yes this is a great first time DSLR camera. I haven't taken pictures at a sport event on snapping the kids. Perfect pictures even in low light.
-
This is my first DSLR too and I am loving learning about all the different features. I can't see why it wouldn't be good at any event and as Tony says you get good results in all light settings.
-
-
Hi there
I recently bought an DS3100 and i have it set on Auto and i'm taking great photos i'm a total beginner but i was wondering how do i set my shutter speed i seem to be only able to press the button the once how can i set it to a faster shutter speed can someone let me know as i have started to take a photograph and the subject moves and i have lost the shot-
I recommend that you read the camera manual, especially the manual contained on the disc, this has far more detail than the booklet version - it's all there and very easy to follow - happy shooting.
-
-
hello, looking to buy for hubby for xmas, is this a good enthusiastic beginners camera to buy ?
-
Yes I would say so. I am a beginner myself and the camera has a very useful built in beginners guide
-
Yes indeed. All the settings are easy to use, the pictures are excellent. It`s also over £100 cheaper than the Canon with the same spec. Go for it. He will love it.
-
-
What memory card would you advise with this camera
Thank you-
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/49191/show.html
ScanDisk 4GB Extreme HD
This is what I use, the camera has excellent video potential so this will optimize that potential.
-
Well i use a SDHC with mine, anything above a 8GB, depends how many photos you want your memory card to hold really! Not entirely sure but i think the SDHC are the ones Nikon recommends you use with it as well :)
-
I have used the SanDisk 8GB Extreme Pro in my camera. Its great for movies
-
Bog standard 4 GB -

-
hello, looking to buy this nikon D3100,i wonder if this DSLR shooting good pic in night? thx for any answer
-
Havent took many night shots at the moment. Did take some pictures on Fireworks night of the fireworks and worked brilliantly with some great photos :-) Hope that helps!
-
-
How do you charge the battery of D3100? I belive there is no charger in the box?
-
No, there is a charger included in the box. The battery lasts for a long time and also charges very quickly. I would highly recomend this camera, I have been very pleased.
Recently, my lense became faulty, the Nikno support service was first class and I was so impressed with how quickly and professionaly my lense was repaired.
Well worth buying.
-
-
New to DSLR. Thinking of moving from point and shoot to DSLR. Can't decide between Nikon D3100 or Canon 1100D. More into photographs than video. May do the odd video, more photographs of landscapes, buildings, wildlife, perhaps aircraft. Would like to do some creative work with HDR and applicable software.
Thanks...-
Hi,
I can't comment re the Canon 1100D, all I can say is that I'm pleased with my D3100. Like you I mainly use it for photographs, and it has proven adaptable and quite intuitive to use. I mainly shoot landscape and aircraft.
Hope this helps.
-
-
would you recommend this camera over the pentax kr?
-
Yes l think it is a great camera for an S L R learner
Which I am.
Everyone as an opinion bit ultimately its up to you
I am doing night school course the tutor recommends Nikon to.
Half the class have either Canons & Nikons.
-
I am really an SLR novice and would not like to recommend my Nikon camera over another make. All I can say is that it is a great camera, easy to use and has many brilliant features.
-
-
i am considering buying this camera i am going skiing and want to take some night time photos up the mountain of the stars and mountains in the background so that there will be no light pollution up there whats the longest exposure time i can set it to
-
sorry,i have sold this camera, just was not happy with quality
-
-
Is the D3100 DSLR remote release compatible?? If so can you provide me with a brand name and model number please??
-
Don't know!
-
-
I am wondering what would be best for me, Nikon P500 or the D3100.
I am a very basic holiday type photographer and want a simple easy to use camera that will be robust and do the job for quality. Any advice appreciated.-
i am very pleased with my d3100 takes great photos i can not comment on the p500 beceause i have not used one
-
I also can't comment on the P500 having never used it however the Nikon D3100 is a great camera it takes amazing high quality photos, But is simple to use. If your looking for a camera that may last you longer and take higher quality photos like a professional then spend a bit more and buy the D3100.
-
-
can you change the time it takes to take a photo - as in make it record everything it sees for like 30 seconds so you capture the blur on screen (like drawing a pic in sparklers, the blur of a car going past etc)?
I am torn between this and the Sony A35 for christmas, is the image quality good for this camera?-
Of course you can change the shutter speed in manuel & S mode. To make moving stuffs blur, set a low shutter speed corresponding to the aperture. Nikon is like a bit pro, expensive but make its job what it's ment for. Sony is totaly consumer base.
-
-
is it easy to use as this will be my first SLR camera
-
My first SLR also, and I think so.
-
-
I am thinking of buying this for my son who wants to start wedding photography. Would this be a suitable camera for this type of photography?
-
Absolutely, just tell him there is good video tutorial on the Nikon website and on "You tube"
-
Its a great dslr camara, the lense would need upgrading for weddings i would recommend. YOU TUBE NIKON D3100 loads of stuff to help you
-
-
I am thinking of buying this for my son who wants to start wedding photography. Would this be a suitable camera for this type of photography?
-
I have had my D3100 for a year, It is an ideal camera for beginners and intermediate photographers alike. The results I have achieved have been extremely good and I am very pleased with it.It has a good battery life although I did purchase a spare.
-
I have only had the D3100 for 4 months but I am very happy with it and with the 18-55 lens supplied I think it would be a good choice for wedding photography.
-
-
whats the zoom like
-
Good for a starter but i am about to upgrade my lens as i enjoy F1 and go to Silverstone.
-
lens is ok but if you can afford it go for the next size up in the package. 55-200mm is good for zoom
-
-
Is it worth it for the money, or might you as well get a more compact, cheaper one??
-
To be honest it really depends on you. It's a great camera and great value for money but if you just want to click an shoot then you can get a good point and shoot for alot less. If you want to learn how to take great photos and spend a bit of time experimenting then don't hesitate and grab this dslr....and a good beginners manual too!
-
Well.. totally agree with Adam.. its upto you, if you are just a point and shoot photographer then I will recommend a compact cheap one and if you really want to hand on experience with some ultra skills of photography then must go for this one.. also i will suggest that if you are going for this one then find another deal with better lens as the lens coming with this deal is not that high.. hope it would help you...
-
-
Is the video recording any good? For like short 3-4 minute video's.
Good Quality?-
Hi,
The video is very good quality considering it is a stills camera!
It is dependent on what you require the video for!
I took a few videos of family etc over Xmas and when watching them back on a 15.4" laptop screen the quality was actually quite surprising! It is full 1080p in my opinion!
You can record up to 10 minute video at a time!
I would advise looking to buy a couple of the San Disk extreme or extreme pro SDHC cards! 4gb is about 60 min pure video (in 10 min max sections) and costs you about £10. They do the larger cards too!
I highly recommend this camera!
Hope that helped!
Huw -
Harvey, i have to agree with 'Huw' as i've only given the camera a test run eveyone says buy high end SDHC cards. I purchased the D3100 for it's video capabilty for our safari to Kenya later this year, i was going to get a small hand held dvd camera to use as well as my old Nikon but decided to upgrade to the D3100 instead, i think you will be impressed, good luck. Hi
Im doing some travelling from April onwards to Thailand etc and want a DSLR to take with me. Im a beginner at photography and just wondered if this camera would be any good to take with me just for basic shots and easy to carry around with me?
Any advice would be great!-
Hi Hayley, we bought this camera for our 15 year old daughter for Christmas. She has had a few basic lessons in phtography but is still a beginner. It's really easy to get started and to operate. It takes fantastic photos and unless you want to go into photography as a career i can't see any reason to buy anything more expensive. Two things I would say, Get the camera a few weeks early and get to know it (There's a inbuilt guide in it). We also bought the Tamron 70-300mm lens, something you might want to think about for those slightly further away shots you're bound to come across on your travels.
Have a great time
Regards
Mary -
I just agree with everything Mary said, a really great camera, love it. Fantastic pictures and easy to use. Try to use the manual or semi automatic modes - even better once you get the hang of it, but even in auto mode its brilliant.
Regards
Marek

hi im studying imedia level 3 at college and wanted to get a camera to take good quality photos thats easy to use since the point and shoot sony camera i have now is not massively great. i have used this canera at college and it seemed alright but is it worth the money and does it take good photos. please could you let me know thanks :)
-
My daughter is doing Photography A Level and thinks it is excellent. Her brother has a Nikon D40 which we thought was good. The D3100 is better. It costs a bit more, I think we paid £399, but it takes good pictures and is worth the extra. Picture quality is good and when flattening images on photoshop the quality remains. My daughter recommends it!
-
-
I currently have a fujifilm finepix and wanting to upgrade to something a bit better. Need an SLR thats good at letting in light with high shutter speeds. As i am photographing mountain bike racing and is a very fast sport, which my fujifilm cannot cope with - especially in low light (such as woods). Heard about the EOS 1100D also but also heard about this..
-
Well, it's my teenage daughters camera so, you can imagine it's not been used for sporting pictures. But I'll go out on my road bike at the weekend and see how it copes to give you a true answer.
-
-
Would this be a good camera for filming skateboarding or other fast sports?
-
Yes! I actually film and take photos of my patner skateboarding. The camera films in HD so you get a really lovely clear image and the sound is perfect.
-
-
Hi, is the image stabilisation on the d3100 in the body or the lens, please
-
It's on the lens
-
-
looking to buy a SLR camera for my daughter, shes's a beginner in photography, do you recommend? Thanks
-
Great camera for ease to use , she will be very pleased & you can buy a book from book shops for that model which gives you some great info and ways to take the best pictures.
-
-
does it come with the lens kit, and if so would it be suitable for a beginner? many thanks.
-
It comes with 18mm to 55mm which is ok for taking standard pictures but if you want to zoom then you will need 55mm to 200mm or 55mm to 300mm if you can afford it. as for the camera I really like mine and it has a guide on the camera to help you get started.
-
-
does this camera have an anti shake built in
-
Yes, it has, but it is not as good as using a tripod
-
Also one of the kit lenses has VR - vibration reduction built into it. Not made a comparison so couldn't say how effective it is, but a brief google search suggests it is quite good. Also the high ISO 3200 is pretty usable, so that could also help.
-
-
Hi! I would like to know if i could change de 18-55 lens with the 18-200. And how much would that be?
Thank u!
-
I hope this link helps, the options would be 18-55, 55-200, and of course there is also 70-300 - just depends what you'd photograph mainly.

-
-
What comes in the box?
Is a charger, USB cable, battery, memory card and neck strap included?-
There is a charger memory card and strap. But did not come with the usb cable to connect it to a computer. Hope this helps you.

All of above except a memory card, you'll need to buy one of those.

I was just wondering, not many people have mentioned the video on this and, as I want to use this instead of my rubbish compact camera, I wondered how good the video actually is (e.g quality of picture, sound quality etc.). Also is this camera good for "point and shoot" picures as well as well thought out shots? I want to know for definite how good this camera is before I buy it as it is quite expensive, especially for a 15 year old.
Thank you!-
Hi, the D3100 has a good video capability and will record in full HD (1080p), switching to video mode is just a case of engaging live view (1 switch) and then pressing the record button so it takes a couple of seconds. Having said that there are limitations, the in-built microphone is mono and there is no option to add an additional microphone. The internal mic also captures some of the cameras 'internal' noises in quiet scenes, e.g. focusing, etc. Also, as it uses the MOV file type for movies the file size is kimited to 4GB or about 10 mins of HD shooting.
It is excellent for point and shoot photos and has a 3 frames per second 'auto' mode allowing continuous auto shooting, this came in especially handy at Seaworld in Florida as I was able to take multiple shots of the killer whales 'in action' and then choose the frames I wanted.
Read a Digital Photography review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3100/15 this also has some movie samples to view, hope this helps

I am thinking of buying the nikon d3100 but need more information on the wide angle as i take a lot of pictures of property (internal and external) so it is important for me to get a lot of detail into one room. (examples of a normal camera and the d3100 would be highly appreciated)

Not sure how to post photos on a review, however the wide angle setting on the camera is 18mm, which is a good wide angle lens, i have just had a look at my kitchen with the lens on 18mm and you can see loads, i really dont think you need to worry, get the camera, you will happy with it. P.s, i think years ago, 28 mm was thought to be wide angle

This might sound very silly. Does this camera include a lens? Can I buy and crack on using it? I have very limited knowledge about cameras.
-
Yes
But you need to make sure before you place the order that it's got lens as well. Lens can be easily fitted. -
Mine came with the lens, and you can buy other lenses depending what you are wanting to use it for. Both my son & I have this camera and we are both delighted with it. We are both novice users. Hope this helps.
-
When buying it should tell you it is the 18-55mm lens kit and this will include the standard kit. The kit is easily fitted and the camera is very easy to use.
