Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Compact, easy to carry - important if you engage in outdoor activites such as walking or mountain biking. Excellent picture quality for the size of the camera. Works reasonably well in lower light situations. I'm still learning how to use it to get the best out of the camera in various conditions. There are lots of scene modes, and sometimes in real situations it is not always clear which one will be best.
Bad points:
No really bad points, but you may need to change your usual method of holding the camera to avoid the pop up flash. Once you get used to this there is no problem.

Confirmed purchaser Experienced amateur

Score 7.0/10
Good points:
size is great for a purse or pocket
clarity of pictures for a small camera is pretty good
large viewing monitor is great
automatic backlight is fantastic so one doesn't have the flash giving reflections off glass

movie function is fast and easy if taking pictures of an accident in progress, there is a choice between photo or movie with just a push of a button
Bad points:
flash pops up right where one's finger is for holding
can't always find the function you want in a hurry for a "quick shot"
Battery life is not as long as expected
pictures have a fish-eye effect and trees on the edge curve in and houses lean
no opportunity to view subject any other way than through monitor which is difficult in bright daylight

Gee, London Point & shoot

Score 7.0/10
Good points:
It is good to hold and takes good pictures
Bad points:
Like most cameras nowadays, it does not have a viewfinder, and using the screen is difficult in bright conditions

The flash shutter is placed where you naturally put your finger to hold the camera, so initially you have to get used to holding the camera so you don't obstrucy the flash when it opens

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Quick response that captures fleeting moments, offering blur-free, beautiful photos
High-performance, stylish models offering 10x and 7x zoom, each the world’s thinnest in their class

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of two stylish new S-series models, the COOLPIX S8000 and S6000, both of which are equipped with high-power zoom NIKKOR lenses. These cameras have a refined design that makes them the thinnest in their class1 yet continue to offer quick response that captures fleeting moments, support for high sensitivities and a number of functions that reduce noise for blur compensation that results in beautiful images.

The COOLPIX S8000 and S6000 will completely satisfy users with their ability to capture the moment with beautiful, sharp images. With a new image processing engine and four advanced image stabilization features that prevent or reduce blur in photos—lens-shift vibration reduction, support for high sensitivities with low noise levels, refined motion detection, a new flash control system—blur and noise are reduced, enabling users to capture the images they intended under circumstances that frequently result in blurred images, such as with super-telephoto shooting, indoor scenes captured under dim lighting, and difficult backlit scenes. In addition, the high-power zoom NIKKOR lenses built into these cameras support shooting of a wide variety of scenes, from wide-angle to telephoto. Basic camera performance has also been refined with optimized image processing engines based on EXPEED, Nikon’s own image processing concept, faster power-up and shooting response, smart portrait mode and the ability to record high-definition movies.

Development background

According to Nikon surveys of compact digital camera users, the primary complaint is the inability to take satisfactory photos that capture the moment or the ambience of a location. Specifically, 1. the inability to capture sharp, clear images under dim lighting, 2. troubles shooting at night, and 3. unnatural results when the flash is used. The COOLPIX S8000 and S6000 will eliminate such complaints, as well as prevent noticeable blur in photos taken with telephoto shooting.

The COOLPIX S8000 offers an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels and is equipped with a 10x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths, beginning at the wide-angle 30mm (35mm format equivalent). The refined design makes it the thinnest camera in its class1 with a depth of approximately 27.3 mm. The camera is also equipped with a creative slider function for adjusting the brightness, vividness and hue of pictures to be taken to suit individual preferences, as well as a 3-in., 921k-dot, wide viewing angle clear color panel TFT LCD monitor for crisp, vivid display. This stylish, high-power zoom camera will allow users to capture the moment and make the most of their individual creativity.

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the Nikon Coolpix S8000

  1. Hi There, I am getting confuse between Panasonic Lumix FS30 and Nikon S8000. Kindly suggest which one to buy. I heard that the Panasonic cameras in general are not so good however not heard any specific bad comment yet. Price on Dixon are comparative for both the cameras which is under GBP 120 or low.

    Appreciate your guidance on this.

    Cheers!!

  2. Is is it worth buying for me where it has great image quality on photos and video and has good features
    Ben asked on
    1. I would highly recommend the camera. Its build quality is pure Nikon ie faultless, robust. Superb pictures and HD video. I paid £149 for mine. Superb value
      David replied on

    2. Yes for the price you coldn't get better - great features but shop around you can get some good deals. Black £160 on amazon

  3. when you buy it does it come with the battery ? also the cables
    annamary asked on
    1. Yes it comes with battery & cables - but no HDMI cable
      paul replied on

    2. That's correct, the USB/charging cable and video/audio cable to connect to a TV come with it. It doesn't come with an SD card though!
I thought it a bit strange that the TV cable is mono sound only, when the camera obviously records in stereo, although I shouldn't think that the stereo is too great with the microphones that close together on top of the camera!
      Dave replied on

  4. previous reviews stated this camera could not be set to take black &white photos, this is what you do ,go to the slider then to vividness adjust to black &white, press ok . Hope this information helps.

    BRIAN asked on
    1. Confirmed! What it won't do is take sepia or otherwise tinted pictures. Personally I'd rather take a standard picture and do all that sort of thing on the computer later. If you take a picture in black and white you can't make it colour again later!
      Dave replied on

  5. can you shoot in raw mode
    tony asked on
    1. No, the camera doesn't support Raw format. I think few if any compact cameras do, you need a digital SLR for that.
      Dave replied on

    2. No, just Jpegs
