Manufacturer's Description

LG digital TV recorder with DVD recorder

Receive up to 40 digital channels and record 21 hours worth at the touch of a button; LG makes it simple and easy.

Freeview
All LG TVs come with built-in Digital Freeview making sure you’re ready for the digital switch-over. With LG TVs you’ll have access to over 40 Freeview TV and radio channels, 8 day on-screen guide and access to digital interactive services.

Super-Multi Read and Write
Unlike many optical drives that read and write in two formats, LG Super-Multi Drives read and write in all three DVD formats (DVD+R, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM), giving you the freedom to choose the format that works best for your needs.

DivX
DivX is a file format that allows movies to be compressed and fit onto a CD, as a DivX movie is about 8 to 12 time smaller than a DVD. DivX playback on LGs video and audio products allow you to download DivX movies from the Internet onto a CD or USB stick, to then enjoy in the comfort of your living room.

1080p Full HD Picture Quality
LG’s Home Cinema produce the highest quality picture for any HD-Ready or HD-Ready 1080p TV. This is the next generation of home entertainment for HD-Ready TVs, delivering high-definition pictures that are far superior to standard DVDs, and boasting superior HD sound.

MP3 CD-R/RW
Supports playback of MP3 files recorded to CD-R/RW.

Progressive Scan
All LG AV Systems support Progressive Scan technology, which helps to relieve the eyes from fatigue when viewing over a long period of time. Progressive Scan projects all the colours onto the screen instantly, without any break between odd and even scanning lines, resulting in a flicker free and high density image. The picture quality is improved even more with DVFX TrueScan pro.

Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the LG DRT389H

  1. i recorded a programme, neither my laptop or my old dvd player could replay the dvd. Why? I used the "SP" option when I recorded it.
    Brigitte asked on
    1. Although this DVD recorder can use most types of DVD discs, not all are "finished" in the same way after recording. Some are finalised automatically, others need to be finalised on the recorder before playback.
If they have not been finalised they may not playback. If it was a +R or -R you used, did you follow a prompt to finalise the disc at the end of recording ? I always use +RW's which automatically finalise on completion of recording and allow editing.
What type of disc did you use ???

  2. If I buy this product it will be used mainly to transfer programmes I've already recorded on my V+ box to DVDS. Can anybody tell me if this is possible and how easy is it to set up, as a common complaint in reviws is the lack of good instructions for this product.
    Helen asked on
    1. Sorry not got the V Box facility to try it but the DVD does a good job and allows for recording from a variety of input sources.Rob

  3. I have a 'Sky' box, and don't want or need Freeview, will I still be able to use this DVD recorder? Any tips on how to connect it?
    June asked on
    1. Connection depends on your TV. If your TV has HDMI input then connect your Sky box to the DVD recorder using SCART connection and then connect the DVD recorder to your TV using an HDMI cable. You can then watch Sky through your DVD recorder by switching the TV to HDMI. Using this configuration you can watch Sky through your DVD recorder and also record what your watching. If you have Sky+ you can play a pre-recorded programme and record it. If your TV hasn't a HDMI connection then you can connect Sky box to DVD recorder using SCART then connect from DVD recorder to TV using the 2nd SCART connection on the DVD recorder. This will also allow you to watch TV via the recorder as well as allowing you to record what you are watching.
      Hope this helps.

  5. Please can someone tell me how to connect this to a V+ box as I cannot work it out. It won't work with the direct connection but I have read other reviews where people have worked it out. I am not very good with these things but know it must be possible!! Thanks
    Liza asked on
    1. Hi, just in case it's 'urgent' I'm answering this from memory as I'm at work. You have to connect the LG to the V+ via the scart as V+ only has 1 HDMI socket unless you have a doubler then your on your own). The scart must go from the LG AV1 to the scart on the V+ then another scart lead has to attach from the V+ to the TV (it should say which one is TV). If I remember the main freeview/standard aerial lead goes into the LG as the V+ is fed by it's own aerial. I think you may need another aerial lead to go to the TV as well. If you connect the HDMI to the TV as well you can switch between HDMI and scart for recording purposes as this way you can record onto disc via scart and watch TV via HDMI. On the LG you have to press the TV/DVD button on the remote to switch from DVD mode to watch the V+ and record. On the V+ you need to switch the settings to scart composite so that it will allow you to record onto the LG. The LG does occasionally not show a picture but it's usually cause I've forgotten to press a button or something. Once you get used to switching between the two it's as easy as 1,2,3.

If the above is unclear or wrong then leave another message and I'll have a look for the link which I got the info from as it has pictures :) Good luck it'll be worth it.

    simon
    simon asked on
    1. The best way for me is to record the whole thing and forward through the adverts when playing back.
      Neil replied on

    2. Yes you could pause recording whilst the adverts are on. Editing them out later is quite time consuming and you have to split the film into many separate files so I don't bother. Editing also depends on the type of disc you're using - I think it has to be a DVD +RW.

  7. Could anyone please tell me if there is a DVI and/or HDMI input on this unit?

    Trevor asked on
    1. YES ! Looking at the rear of your recorder and to far right, plug in your HDMI cable from TV into HDMI jack socket. When you use HD connection you may need to check picture is perfect by pressing repeatedly the resolution (RES) button on front display of recorder (to right of record button) to perfect picture. While using the RES button this can occasionally cause slight malfunction. If so turn off both TV & Recorder. Then turn on TV for 30 secs followed by recorder.

  8. can anyone explain the difference beetween rw+ or- and which is best dvd to record onto? Can you use the same dvd again or just record onto it once?
    David asked on
    1. The LG is capable of using both media and as far as recording video I haven't noticed any difference. The LG offers different editing facilities depending on whether you use +RW or -RW, both formats allow at least 1000 overwrites on the one disc. There are similar differences when editing -R and +R discs, it should be noted that until finalised these discs can be used to record multiple programmes on the same disc up to the limit of the disc which is 4.7Gb, however these discs can only be used once. Finalising the disc means you can use it in other DVD devices. 4.7Gb gives about 2hrs video recording on standard quality, which is very good quality video playback.

  10. How do you transfer stuff from the Hard Drive to a DVD? Can't find it in the manual and I don't find the menus intuative. I feel a right fool for not being able to work it out.
    Thanks in advance.
    A shopper asked on
    1. Hi, the manual is confusing and doesn't actually tell you how. I'm doing this from memory as not home right now. I have a V+ box and it's linked this way: V+ VCR scart to the LG AV1 scart, V+ TV scart to TV. My V+ box is also linked to the TV by HDMI and the LG is linked to the TV via the other scart (can also use A/V sockets). I can't remember how the aerial links but think its V+ to LG then TV you might need to experiment. On the V+ home menu change the settings (home, 8 then 4) to widescreen/4:3 etc and composite and the TV to scart. The screen should be black when on scart and only audio playing. To get the picture just press TV/DVD on the LG remote. If the above is not clear then follow the instructions given here (If the link doesn't show then go to amazon.co.uk and search for 'copy from vcr' under the LG reviews and it's the 3rd one down) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/forum/cd/discussion.html/ref=cm_cd_fp_ef_tft_tp?ie=UTF8&cdForum=Fx23QEZRWQ8L281&asin=B0018BTP7O&cdThread=Tx1AJK11J0Q1MN9.

  11. will this machine copy programmes from sky+ to dvd disc?, or can you reccommend one that will?
    gareth asked on
    1. Hi Gareth,
Sorry but I cannot answer that question. I have a V+ box from Virgin and I am able to transfer recorded programmes on the V+ box to DVD. I have a V+ box menu "copy to DVD/VCR" which I use to copy via the LG to the disk. The quality is excellent.
The instruction manual was little help in setting it up to record from the V+ box. I experimented for many hours and now have a system that works. The connections work for a VCR and the LG DVD recorder. It is a bit of a fiddle as I have to use the V+ box control to select the programme to transfer, then the TV controller to switch from HDMI to AV1, this gives me the image programme to be transfer, then I start recording with the LG control. At the end of the session I stop the record and then go back to HDMI to end the V+ box session, or start the next transfer.
I have transfered about 45 hours of programmes since January without a single failure and am pleased with the results.
Before and after purchasing the recorder I search for info on transfer to the V+box and found many articles that said it was not possible, the ones that said it was had problems, the most common being loss of sound.
I can give details of my wiring if required.

    2. I also Have a Virgin V+ box and is connected via scart leds to the DVD recorder. Programs that have previously been recorded on the V+ can be transfered to DVD. Under the V+Extras select copy to VCR/DVD . Play the program and set the DVDrecorder to record. This may work with Sky+ as they are similar machines . Brian

  12. No experience of DVD recorders, so, can this be connected to an ordinary VHS tape machine and copy my tapes to DVD (reasonably easily ?)
    Colin asked on
    1. Hi Colin
According to the manual you can, and there is a special plug hole for it on the machine, although I haven't tried. You can also record from Camcorder.
      Martina
      Daft Punk replied on

    2. I do not know about Camcorders. but the tape to dvd is excellent. No problems except the time left on discs is not quite accurate sometimes. if you don't mind this and allow e.g. 50 mins. left on clock might be 45- 48 mins. I record most things on LP. 4 hrs per dvd + r. Pictures and sound not bad. Then take videos to charity shops etc.. Make sure you finalize and intialize correctly to required format. and bingo. Have tried my recordings on many other dvd players and found no problems on playback.
I hope this helps. Also make sure your tape recorder is compatible with a dvd player on at the same time, as old systems will not work together. Check to see if you have 2 scarts on the back of video player etc...

  13. Can anyone help, How do I record from a miniDV camcorder to DVDr on the DVD Recorder?
    Emran asked on
    1. On the front of your DVD Recorder, on the bottom right (Lift panel cover), there are 5 input sockets. Choose the 2nd one along. This is the DV In socket which connects your Digital Camcorder to the Recorder. Hope this solves your problem
      Ian
      Ian replied on

    2. It depends which connection you will be using.
DV in is very specific to certain cameras but the AV3 is the more common interface which uses red and white pins for sound and yellow for vision. Whichever you choose to utilise you must select that input on the recorder using the remote control AV button. It sounds a bit involved but iis actually quite simple to do.

Purchased a HDMI cable to see if that helped - but no difference. Have swapped just about every lead/cable around! Some say it is simple - but not for us! Are we missing something? So grateful if anyone can guide us through it! Thanks

    1. The DVD recorder I purchased has been most successful in doing what I wanted - namely to record and play back programmes. The instructions were very simple and easy to follow. However, I 'm afraid I know absolutely nothing about SKY+ and am very sorry not be able to help you. I hope someone else can be of more use to you. Good luck

  20. I have a Sony VHS/DVD Player Model SLV - D983P G1and wish to convert VHS tapes to DVD will the DRT 389H do tjhis without to much of a problem ?
    Peter asked on
    1. The DRT 389H is a DVD recorder, and doesn't have a built-in VHS player. If you've got a VHS player with a SCART output, you could certainly plug it into the 389H, then press play on the VHS player and record onto the 389H. You would need a separate VHS player, though. We use the SCART input to record from our Sky+ box onto DVDs on the 389H, so I know this works.

    1. Dave,
Your Sky box should auto-tune without you needing to do anything manually apart from activating the auto-tune on the DVD player by accessing through settings (OK the menu choice before movies, I think)

  24. if i copied something onto a blanck disc, would i be able to play it without changing the disc's format.
    anton asked on
    1. Presumably you mean if you record it on this DVD, if so, it will have formatted it anyway without you even knowing it, from the beginning before you started recording. If you are asking about playing it on another machine, that machine must be capable of playing DVD Ram discs. If you are using +R or -R discs, they are already formatted anyway. If you record onto these then
they will only replay in a DVD recorder machine. If you wish them to be played back on a normal DVD player they will need to be formalised (creates a directory for the player to access the files in the correct sequence) first.
      Marian replied on

    2. Ditto, as Marian said - but the word "finalized" is usually used (i.e. to finish off a recorded DVD so as to make it compatible for playback on another machine).
      Christian replied on

    Mitchell asked on
    1. Yes it can record any channel on normal TV, it's the satellite channels I cannot record. It may be possible to record satellite but I cannot find the correct programme and the manual does not explain how to do it.
      Joanie replied on

    2. Yes it can record any channel on freeview tv, but if you want to watch a different channel to what is recording you need to have a separate freeview box.
      susan replied on

  27. No but i mean can it record like a dvd player or ps3 or xbox just out of interest
    Mitch asked on
    1. The LG DRT389H has a number of connections that it can record from, however all of the inputs are analogue so your recordings can only ever be in real time. So if your PS3 or XBox has an analogue out the recorder will record whatever is on the analoge signal.
      Hope this helps.

We want a dvd recorder that allows us to record the programmes on to disc, Hoping someone out there has an answer!!!
    Jean asked on
    1. The machine records the Freeview channels - that are inbuilt into the dvd player. Plays other dvds. However it does not record other inputs eg. VHS so I imagine it would not do what you require. Nevertheless for the price it is very good.
      Neil replied on

    2. Yes you can! I've done it several times. I have a Virgin HD box and I record onto it then transfer it onto disc. If you have the old style you can record directly to disc unless the programme has been encoded. The only thing is that you need to do it via the Virgin & recorders scart sockets. It's a tiny bit fiddly to set up at first but once you have done it, it works well. HTH

  33. Used to work fine, although now any disc I use (always +RW) will only record between 30 and 54 secs at a time, either when trying to direct record or timer record, it's driving me mad!! Tried restoring factory settings etc, also turn off/on, unplug etc., but to no avail....
    Billie asked on
    1. I have never had any problems like that, have you tried -RW or single used discs
      Kevin replied on

  34. When you have already finalised a part full DVD -rw disc can you later unfinalise it to add more to the dvd (eg more camcorder footage filmed after disc 1st created) before re finalising it again?
    Paul asked on
    1. As far as i known this is not possible. I think to be able to re-record on the disk you have to delete whats on there. if the disk is not full I would suggest not finalizing it till its full, you will still be able to watch the disk but only on your LG machine until its finalized. I hope this helps.
      Kris replied on

    2. I agree with above, especially as it is a -RW disc.
I would also add that you may find that using DVD +RW discs are far more flexible, in that editing is possible, allowing you to record, leave space for later recording (without finalising manually) and to watch at will, including being able to edit what you've recorded and label each separate bit with a title and date etc.

  36. Im considering buying this dvd recorder but not sure what 'region 2' is?
    Mandy asked on
    1. All Dvds have a region on the back so Region 1 is USA, Region 2 is Europe inc UK. Dvd players will either play a single region or 'All'. So if you buy a region 2 dvd player it will only play dvds with Region 2 on the back. If you look on the back of a dvd there is usually a globe symbol with a number on it, thats the region. If you're the type of person who travels and may buy dvds abroad then it's better to get a multi-region player.

  37. i have recorded some cam corder footage onto a +rw disc, but unable to watch on another dvd player,i assume the disc is finalised before i start recording, can i finalise after recording by putting disc back in machine and doing it manually?
    dave asked on
    1. I always finalise after recording.

  38. i assume +rw discs finalise automatically after recording? i put disc in after to do manually but couldnt , what are the best +rw discs that will let me record and are compatible with other machines?
    dave asked on
    1. Sorry I can't help, I have only ever used -RW and -R discs. Using these and finalising them I've never had any problems playing the discs in any other player.
It doesn't seem to matter what discs I use, Sony, Memorex or Tesco.
Page 21 of the user manual confirms your first point.

  39. I have just purchased this as a replacement for my old recordable dvd player which died. However, it will not allow me to record virgin cable tv. I can record from the in-built freeview no problem, but when linked to the virgin digi box, using scarts, we have picture but no sound. On looking in the smallprint in the manual, it says something about cable tv being a different frequency and that this can't be recorded using this player. Isn't recording tv the whole point of a dvd recorder! Is there a way around this?
    A shopper asked on
    1. Sorry I do not know the answer to this as we only record via the built in Freeview.

  40. Hi, I want to buy this DVD for my Dad who is not technically minded at all! He wants to be able to watch a programme while recording another. From what I gather you need a separate freeview box to make this possible. He has just purchased a new flat scree with freeview in built and has Sky, but not Sky + would these two allow him to do the above with out buying another freeview box on top?
    Julia asked on
    1. Hi If you have got a tv with built in freeview then that's all you need - you don't need a separate box. However as we don't have Sky I can't answer the second part of your question. Sorry can't help more.
      Carol replied on

    2. i think u need sky+ to watch and record another programme
      Kenneth replied on

    3. Hi Julia
I assume your new tv has 2 scart connections (AV1 & AV2) at the rear.

Connect the scart lead into the Sky box (marked dvd /recorder) the other end into the LG recorder top scart connection, then connect a scart lead from the lower scart connection of the recorder and connect to the tv in AV1 connection (the sky scart connection should be in AV2).

On the LG remote press the AV button to select AV2 you will see this on the LG display this will then set up a recording connection between the sky box and the recorder which you then can set up a timed or manual recording but remember to set the sky box on the channel you need to record.

You can then watch a freeveiw channel on your tv or watch sky when recording from freeveiw on the LG.

Hope I hav'nt made it to complecated.

      Cheers Dave

    1. I have not played any cd players on it yet, but when i played DivX it wouldnt play. Rang up customer services and they said that i needed to use certain brand named dvd's which is a load of bull.
I dont think that the manufacturers tested out the model . It should play cd's without any gliches

  42. can anyone tell me please how to use USB in this DVD I didnt get any USB cable port

    JACK
    JACK asked on
    1. Jack
The port is behind the front drop down flap, below the 4 buttons on the right hand side. I have not used the port. The instruction book only refers to a flash drive.

  43. I have a dvd with a hard drive.
Would I be able to transfer from this dvd with the hard drive to the LG to free up some space .
Some recordings, ie Harry potter, and some football matches, I would like to save on disc.
    Peter asked on
    1. Hi Peter..Let me first say that I'm no expert on recording equipment.
What I can tell you is that the LG DRT389H can record from an
external source; the instruction book mentions input from a camcorder or VCR connected to any of the LG's external inputs. My hard drive Humax HDR-FOX T2 is not capable of transferring data, but other hard drive devices may have this facility. Your hard drive instruction book should help you.
I hope this information is of some help.
      Best wishes, Walter

    2. I often record boxing from Sky to disc by connecting Sky box to LG recorder with a Scart lead. This comes through via AV2 on the LG recorder. Presumably the same could be done with the equipment you have.

  44. I have a non-digital recorder that can record in EP (DVD-RW) giving 8 hours play. Will this recorder do the same? Or better? Can I still use (and play) DVD-RWs? Can I record one programme and watch another?

    Mary asked on
    1. I have done SP 2hrs/DVD) and LP (4HRS /DVD) but havn't tried the others yet (EP and XP). Have been using -RWs ok but you need to finalise them sfter recording if you want to play on a another DVD player.Havn't tried your last question, I use it for V+ (Virgin)
      Allen replied on

    2. HI. When setting your programmes to be recorded, it automatically sets it at EP (6 hours) If , when you put in an entry, it shows 'lack of space' then change it to MLP. This gives you 21 hours recording. The only slight drawback is that the picture isn't of such a high quality as it is on LP or EP.
XP gives 1 hour recording. Fantastic picture quality but only useful for the one programme
      SP gives you 2 hours
      LP gives you 4 hours
EP gives you 6 hours and MLP gives you 21 hours.
I do hope this helps. Good luck
      Kay replied on

    3. The others have pretty much covered it. I recorded over 6 hrs of stuff on MLP to free up space on the sky+ box. To be fair it's a bit blocky and that was a BBC program. Std Sky 1 would be unwatchable as it's poor def to start with but HD might be ok.
      Simon replied on

  45. will it allow you to watch channels in HD live as well as it upscaling the recording?
    Jacob asked on
    1. as long as your signal is HD.
