- Good points:
- Very easy to set up with straight-forward and clear menus. Very good 2D SD TV pictures from antenna, absolutely stunning 2D HD pictures from Blu-ray. 3D is good, with a good sense of depth, but there is noticeable cross-talk at times - however it varied from noticeable to invisible depending on the nature of the scene and I can happily accept this at the price this set is now available for. In addition, the LG 3D glasses are by far the most comfortable I've tried (especially as I have to wear them over my own glasses) which was a real plus point when watching a full-length 3D movie. The look of the TV is gorgeous (the web images do not do it justice), the edges of the screen frame fade from black to dark blue to transparent at the outside edge and the LG logo lights up in a nicely understated manner when the TV is on (the logo automatically switches off for 3D viewing). As an LED/LCD unit this is very thin (not much over an inch) which (although not a technical point) looks very 'cool' sat in the corner of our living room:-)
- Bad points:
- Only one, but it was extremely annoying. The audio from the optical digital output suffers a noticeable delay compared to the image on the screen ('lip sync error') when plugged into an external surround sound amplifier (a Yamaha RV-X667 in my case). There is no delay when using the TV's internal speakers, but their sound is pretty thin and I wanted proper multi-speaker Pro-Logic II sound for TV viewing. Blu-ray and Freeview SD fed in via the amplifier's HDMI output do not suffer any problem, so the issue is definitely with the TV. The UK LG support team were not particularly helpful and after 3 or 4 calls I ended up being told that there "must be a compatibility problem with the amplifier" and there was nothing they could do about it. The Yamaha support engineer was much more helpful (he actually seemed to know the technical side of HDMI connections etc) and said that although all new TVs and amps are supposed to talk to each other via HDMI to avoid 'lip sync' errors they have discovered that quite a number of TVs do not do so (even though they're meant to). I eventually worked around the problem by taking an analogue audio feed from the LG TV's SCART socket (the only other 'audio out' option on the TV and which required a SCART to twin RCA plug adaptor) and running it into one of the Yamaha's analogue AV inputs. The Yamaha engineer suggested using the Yamaha's L & R 'multi-channel in' inputs as these used the very minimum audio processing, hence minimising the chance of audio delays. Note that the LG does not support the HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) facility, so it is not possible to take an audio feed from the TV back through the HDMI lead used to send the picture to the TV.
