Here’s a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the HTC Desire S S510E

  1. My learn more app is not in english, i think it is spanish, any ideas how to correct this?
    Darren asked on
    1. Mine does the same but anything I need help with I just go on the htc website where you can find the full user guide:
      http://www.htc.com/www/userguide.aspx?p_id=391

      L replied on

  2. Do you think its a good phone? whats its weekness and strengths? Have you got one and if you do are you glad you brougth one? Also what contract would you advice me to get if you have it on contract...?
I would be very great full if you reply xx
    Joy asked on
    1. I think it is a very good phone, one of the best around.
Strength wise, it has lots, its fast, easy to use, easy to customise, texting is good, camera is good, music player is good, apps are good, you get a big memory card with it, 8gb i think or maybe 16. Its tough and thin , the buttons are just what you want, home, menu, back and search (phone or google) and yer its just an awesome phone.
Weaknesses wise i cant really think of any to be honest. The battery doesnt last that long but compared to other smartphones i think its still quite good, it all depends on usage. But yer i cant think of any other weaknesses.
Yes i have one and i am very glad i bought one and payed a bit extra for it as its so good and worth it.
Erm it totally depends on what you want from it, im on £15 a month dolphin from orange which gets me unlimited texts (as i text a lot), 100 mins (as i need to use this as my main phone when im away at uni) and 250mb internet a month. i think 250mb internet is enough for a moderate internet user like me but it depends like where you have wifi and where you will use it.
      Hope This Helps
      Nick replied on

    2. No problems with phone. easy to use. online user guide fantastic.
Battery life is poor, but i have never owned a proper smartphone before so this may be the norm.

    Jacqui asked on
    1. iv just had a look through settings and that and i cant find anything about text size sorry, and i assume they use the same app store so id say no sorry
      Nick replied on

  4. My Husband has the original Desire and has not been able to down load an app or have the facility to increase the font size when texting, does this model have a facility to increase the font?
    Jacqui asked on
    1. I didn't find on s either but there is an app called chompsms that does that but I haven't tried it
      khaliq replied on

  6. on a contract, how much do you pay monthly??
    Rhiannon asked on
    1. With Orange I pay about £25 a month but I was lucky enough to get friends and family discount so would normally be £35 a month and thats including unlimited internet, text messages and 600 minutes.
      L replied on

    2. on mine i pay £15 a month for unlimited texts, 100 mins and 250mb internet. im on orange. but can get loads of different contracts so you can find whatever suits you
      Nick replied on

    3. £25. 24 month. 300 mins. unlimited texts. 500mb internet. on orange.

  7. I've read at Tech Radar Review of the phone that it has an issue with the Wifi. The signal gets very weak or disappears completely if you grab the phone from it's upper part (on portait mode). Did anyone have this impression or what is your experience with WiFi signal in general? Thanks :)
    Konstantinos asked on
    1. In general the WiFi signals or fine ,at least I haven't noticed this problem although I use WiFi a lot.
      khaliq replied on

    2. I have issues the wifi as well which i have to refresh so often to get it back . Would say its not the strongest feature of the phone

  9. i was thinking of upgrading to the htc desire s. how big is the keypad when ur txting? if you tilt it to the side does it go bigger so it's easier to txt? overall how good is the phone? im stuck on what to get because i think the htc hd might be to big for me.
    Tracy asked on
    1. when in portrait mode it fills about half the screen and yes it goes bigger and wider when you tilt it to the side. i think the phone is very very good, the only downside iv noticed is no flash on the camera, yet you can still get a torch app which is weird but yer apart from that i love everything its great. i thought the same but its really thin so you dont notice you can still hold it in one hand and reach every bit of the screen and yer its fine size wise in my opinion
      Nick replied on

    2. Yes i agree the hd was to big to be my choice as well. If you turn the desire s the screen goes into landscape, and you get a full qwerty keypad.
Overall i find the phone superb, and would recommend it to anyone.
Be aware tho' that the batterry life seems poor if this is your first smartphone
      glyn replied on

    3. Phone is great and keypad is good enough even for my clumsy fingers! And my htc desire s has a flash on the camera so don't know what Nick is talking about! I'd definately recommend this phone!

    kate asked on
    1. You know what, I had exactly the same problem!!! I was on the verge of sending the phone back!!! Go onto settings on your phone, then down to accounts and sync, and you need to add account, if I remember rightly it'll give you a few options. If you're still stuck after that ask me a question again and I'll try and remember exactly what I did lol. Hope this helps. Good luck. Kim

    thanks
    chloebert@ asked on
    1. The desire s is fantastic, don't know a lot about wild fire. If your doing Contract I would get desire s,. My last phone was apple 4 and the desire for me is much better and processor a lot quicker.

      Ronald replied on

  16. so if you have it on all day you will have to charge all night
    frey asked on
    1. Yes, pretty much. It depends how much you use the internet. If you don't use it at all it could last a couple of days but any surfing and you need to charge overnight. Internet seems to drain the battery quite quickly.
      A verified owner replied on

    2. No, I use it a fair bit during the day and charge it up over night, although its generally fully charged after a maximum of 3 hours from flat to full
      Rick replied on

  17. Hey, I was wondering what HTC Sense is and does this phone has Instant Messaging?
    Beth asked on
    1. HTC sense helps sort the applications as far as I can gather. According to my 17 yr old it does not have IM but I would chech that out as he is blackberry biased. Hope this helps.

  18. Does anyone know whether BBC i player works ok on the Desire S?

Brilliant sound and quality .. I've not had any problems.
Twist the phone horizontally for a bigger picture.

  19. Should i save up for a desire s or should i just buy the wildfire s now ???
    Fin asked on
    1. definatley save for a Desire, my friend just got a wildfire, they are good but desire is much better, the graphics are better and you get so much more with a desire. I would not change my Desire S for anything not even an Iphone.
      Hope this helps
      steve replied on

    2. I agree with Steve, The Desire S is fantastic. I was going to get the Wildfire when I first saw it but I am so pleased that I went for the higher model. I would have regretted getting the Wildfire.

  20. What apps would you reccomend for this phone and does pes 11 work well on it
    Finley asked on
    1. Hi, got loads of games running on it. Haven't tried PES 11.
      Fabian replied on

    2. I have no idea if pes 11 works on an HTC desire s, it's really not my sort of thing. As for apps I'd recommend? To be totally honest, this is rather dependant on what you want your phone for, it comes with quite a range of apps out of the box, & so far I've not really had any difficulties with them, I mean there's a missing feature or 2 in the Facebook / Twitter apps such as not being able to delete posts from Facebook & not being able to "click" some external Twitter links, but over all, these apps still work just fine. I do however recommend getting some sort of AntiVirus protection app, personally I use avg, & I can't fault it, except that it flags sms messages from my bank as "suspicious" & there seems to be no way to make them "safe". 1 little niggle I have is that some apps seem to have features that are US only, like "got milk" I use this for creating shopping lists, now you're meant to be able to scan the barcodes of things & add them to your list that way, but this doesn't appear to work with anything you can buy here, it just tells you it can't find it & please enter manually.
      Hannah replied on

  21. im new to my desire s and am wondering how to delete awful loaded music and find mp3 played for my downloaded songs as they are stuck in apps, download . so i can only play them one at a time . all help grateful
    sir asked on
    1. ermm i dont really understand the question but i copied all my music accross from a file on my computer to the media? i think file on the phone and i would just delete them off there, but im not sure about on the phone or on apps sorry
      Nick replied on

    2. Ok in the music player app go to the list of all songs and press and hold the song you want to delete. A few options will pop up and choose delete. Not sure about your downloaded songs as when I download a song they are usually automatically found in the music player app. It may be worth checking again as sometimes it takes a while until you find the songs in the music player.
Hope this helps and enjoy the phone! :)
      L replied on

  22. What driver software do you need to install for pc to desire s transfers
    steve asked on
    1. HTC have their own software, downloadable from their site - you just select your phone model from the drop down list.
      Eddy replied on

  23. I'm wondering if i should get the HTC Desire S or the HTC Wildfire S. What are the differences and which would you reccomend? Thanks a lot
    Becca asked on
    1. I personally went for the Desire S because it has a slightly larger screen and a secondary camera, for video calls, though my daughter uses it as a mirror ! It has a faster processor too.

      Mr Levity replied on

    2. I have not used a wildfire s, but my advice would be that the desire s is so good, I would absolutely recommend it. I went for it for similar reasons to Mr levity, large screen, 2 cameras, and possibly a faster processor but don't hold me to that! The desire s also looks and feels nice to hold, and I personally prefer it to the wildfire, which is a tad too small for me. Hope this helps!
      Katie replied on

  24. I have a blackberry at the minute but i am looking at getting a htc but i am stuck about what to get. It is either desire s, wildfire s or the cha cha. Thanks if you can help.

    3. A workmate has the wildfire s and i have the desire s and mine is slightly bigger but a lot more advanced and i dont know much about the cha cha. The desire s is a great phone which i am 100% happy with, i hope this has been helpful.

  25. Does the camera have zoom? Is it as good as a standard digital camera?
    Lynne asked on
    1. The camera does have zoom. It's pretty good actually and I was surprised, it is as good as most 5Mp sub £150 cameras.

It will cope with most situations and react very fast to the shutter press. Some phone cameras are slow to take the shot, not in this case.

      Hope it helps.
      John replied on

    2. Yes the camera is prity good, h
There is zoom available and good editing tools
      mark replied on

    3. Zoom is pretty good, I wouldn't say that it zooms that far though , but you are comparing a digital camera to a phone . The zoom doesn't pixelate though so its pretty good
      elizabeth replied on

  26. i'm due for an upgrade but can't decide whether to go for the htc desire s or an i phone 4???? opinions please, thanks
    tracy asked on
    1. Personally I think iPhones are over-rated. My mate has one and swears its better than my HTC but he's yet to prove it. My Desire S is smaller for a start, battery life about the same and with all the apps theres nothing the iPhone can do that my HTC cant. Its all down to personal preference I would say.
      Yvette replied on

    2. I have htc desire s and I like it.have everything what I need.My wife have an iphone and not so happy.I think that my htc is faster for internet.it is all down to personal choice.

  27. What is the 3G reception like on the Desire S, I've heard mixed reports?
    Ross asked on
    1. Very good. I'm in the Lincolnshire area, have travelled around, Notts, Yorkshire, down to Heathrow and to France, and even got good reception up mountains!
      Jill replied on

    2. Not lost signal anywhere yet... Internet pretty quick on it too
      rachel replied on

  28. Hi, Ive recently got a wildfire S & yes unhappy with the battery life but to be expected when you start using the app's & internet etc .. But still why design a phone with all this on it when you can enjoy it for too long. My moan first off is the sound on the wildfire S is rubbish i have a 6700 & the sound for a mobile is pretty good. What's the sound like on the desire ?? Secondly finding it difficult to text as qwerty keys are small even when using it potrait is it the same on the desire i know the screen is slightly bigger but stil ... Does it come with the same problem ??
    Giles asked on
    1. Hi Giles, yeah the battery life isn't great I get two days at best out of my Desire S (typically I charge it every night though). I don't really have anything to compare the Desire S sound against as I haven't really used a phone for sound/music but I'm happy with it. I tend to use the radio and MP3 player of my Desire S quite a lot and the issues I have are more to do with MP3 quality. I've found the keyboard quite easy to use on the Desire S and the auto-correct generally works really well allowing me to text as fast or faster than with previous phones. Sometimes I have difficulty hitting keys so I turn the phone on its side for a bigger keyboard and I've had no issues with that. I hope my answer is of some use to you but I'd be happy to help further, these phones are quite an investment!
      Nicky replied on

    2. Sound is good in terms of clarity but could be louder.
Since found to preserve battery life you can manage the applications and stop some of them running in background when not needed. Text size resolved by adjustment of settings to that of a normal phone button size i.e. 3 letters to a button so works for me.
      David replied on

    3. sound, text keys are no problem , battery life is very reasonable but yes if you use the apps especially kids games it does drain but it charges really quickly
      graeme replied on

  29. if the phone is switched off or on silent, does the alarm still work?? if not what should i upgrade to?

    Mitzie asked on
    1. Hi Mitzie, Sorry, I haven't used that function on the phone as yet so I don't know.
      Jacquie replied on

    2. Hi Mitzie, this phone does not support video calling - although it has a front facing camera, thats for use with hd video record function. I think it may be that its not so popular nowadays. However, the way i gotaround this when my kids were abroad and i wanted to speak/see them was to download the SKYPE app. It worked perfectly!! good luck, enjoy your HTC!! :)

  33. am due an upgrade in 3 days and having done alot of research on both phones (iphone 4 & desire s) i still cannot decide.all i would like to do with a phone is watch films listen to music and watch sky sports @work is this possible with the desire? any help would be appreciated.
    steve asked on
    1. Hi, I was torn between myself, looking at both the iphone and HTC, I decided on the HTC mainly because the contract that i got with the phone was a lot better than the offer for the Iphone, you can have all of your apps that you can get for the Iphone, the only difference really is that HTC doesnt have iTunes, but if you already have an iPod then the option of the HTC may be the one for you. My friend has an iphone and there really isnt much of a difference. You can download films and music onto the HTC also and you can access the internet for sports news etc also. Hope this helps - good luck!

    morgan asked on
    1. Hi morgan

If you're after a quality android phone then I can recommend this phone, sure the battery life isn't fantastic, but to my knowledge there isn't a smart phone that has a 'good' battery life. I use mine mainly for phone calls, emails, texts, social network sites, games and calender/diary.

It looks smart too (pun not intended), sleek and a nice metal body too which is a nice feature. Great functionality too. If you can put up with charging it up every 36hours (I charge mine up each night) then I'd definitely recommend it. Hope this helps!

    2. Hi Morgan,

I love my HTC! It has lots of apps, is easy to use, looks great and some nice features such as the weather app. It does everything you need a phone to do. The internet can be a little slow at downloading and you do need to charge it every day but definitely my favourite phone so far (my husband has an iPhone and is quite envious of some of the features on mine :)

    Arian asked on
    1. The battery does run down when used heavily as with other smart phone. I have an app I got which helps extent battery life by double.
I only need to charge mine each night and it last through the day.

I know its mainly about personal preference but if you could help me i would be great full

  41. HI i use wifi for internet as it keeps going down and up is that normal? as using it on this it stays full signal
    Rach asked on
    1. I'm a little confused as to what exactly you mean. Naturally though depending where you are & where your WiFi signal is coming from, & what objects are between you (ie walls) will depend on how strong your WiFi signal will be. I've not had any problem with WiFi on the desire s, at all, signal strength fluctuates up & down as you would expect, but it's full signal too at varying times. I have discovered that other radio signals can affect the WiFi, such as I can't have my phone when it's actively using the WiFi, near my wireless mouse & keyboard, as it prevents them working. But I'd say as long as you can use the WiFi, like you'd expect to (signal wise) on a laptop for example, it's all working normally. Hope that helps.

    jacob asked on
    1. Well it depends on what you do with it really, if you have wifi on a lot or use GPS and so on... I have an app which helps battery time but I still need to charge it as often as I can. If you are careful though it should get you through a whole day.
      Paul replied on

I've used HTC Market do download Adobe Flash player, as it instructed, and even tried downloading Adobe plugin to make flash player work! Unless, of course I've done it all wrong! Please help!
    Claire asked on
    1. Hi Claire. Just tried it myself and it worked fine. Didn't need to download anything. However as it's connecting via the home wi-fi, I turned that off and it would find the website, it wouldn't play the same thing, but asked me to turn the wi-fi on. I'm guessing it needs a lot of data to run the movies, which might not be possible via the standard internet download thing. Are you trying at home or out and about? And have you gone into 'settings' and turned your wi-fi on? Mine's always on, which is probably why it eats the battery...

    Subhadeep asked on
    1. Get desire S, it is in fact pretty much on par with the iPhone 4 itself, excluding the speed of Internet (which only to say about a few seconds faster) and the HTC desire S has a better design than Experia...

  51. I have had problems getting my virgin meadia mail to my phone (address below). after spending an hour with orange they couldnt help with the pop settings. Do you need push email to recieve emails. What am i doing wrong. its soooo fustrating.
    lynette asked on
    1. Check with Virgin Media to see whether they use POP or whether they use IMAP for mail delivery. Either way your desire S should be able to handle both although the settings and entries you need to make will be slightly different. Check the obvious also - ie. upper/lower case entries, passwords, correct username and POP/IMAP server URL's are all correct. Every time I've re-entered this data when changing my phone I always seem to get something wrong & need to restart. You are aware that you need an Internet Data plan to receive POP/IMAP emails?

  52. Hi! I'm thinking of buying the HTC desire s but when I went through the reviews, everyone seems to have had a problem with the battery. Is it really such a big issue? I wouldn't mind charging it everyday and I'm not a heavy user or anything. Will the battery be a problem?? Thank you.
    AB asked on
    1. The battery is an issue for me, purely because I use the internet regularly on the device. Charge every single night, and on medium usage, it's usually dead by noon.
I used it on Friday to make a call, was only on for thirty minutes and the battery depleeted to below 30%.

Brilliant phone, but battery is rubbish.

However, take a look on eBay or the likes for replacement / spare batteries - I am going to invest in one, that way I can enjoy the brilliant phone, even when the original battery is dead!

    2. I don't surf the internet all day, probably about an hour a day all my emails come to the phone and I check these and down load a few attachments also talk on the phone for around about 45 minutes a day the battery will just about two days but safer to charge every night. Hope this helps.
