      james replied on

    2. Works fine.
      Dave replied on

    3. Crystal clear, only streams as fast as your router will permit but..
      joe replied on

  2. Can you use the internet and listen to itunes at the same time?

    Cheers
    henry asked on
    1. Yes with the latest OS (4.?)

      Simon replied on

    2. Yes you can, it's a great device. I couldn't imagine doing without it!
      Kelly replied on

  3. Hi there, Can anybody help me about the Apple I Pad with Wi-Fi Please?
How do I get my Apple I pad on Pay as you go? Is it p[ossible or do you have to have only the conntract? Thanks
    Cris asked on
    1. If u buy an ipad 3g from apple , orbanother retailer, u can thn buy a sim card for ipd from a network and use it as payg. But you cant use ipad wifi only as payg.
      James replied on

    2. Might I add you can use the wifi iPad anywhere if you have one of the following:
a phone with data package that is capable of creating a wifi hotspot. Eg htc.
A location with free wifi. Lots of malls and restaurants etc now offering this
Or finally buy a pay as you go mifi dongle from three mobile or vodaphone. Hope this helps
      Jason replied on

  4. hi, can you use the ipad for online banking and is it safe to do this? thanks
    Michael asked on
    1. Hi, yes you can,you can do anything that you could do on any browser, except play anything using flash player, legal nonsense.
But I would say be very careful checking you account when out, and also after you have finished ensure you log out, then go to setting and just knock of your e-mail.
Just be caution, who's around and where you do it, would not even consider around big towns or cities, cafes etc,as they are the worst places, check in the car. Away from hackers. Hope this helps.
      Philip replied on

  5. if i get 1 on pay as u go how does this work is the internet built in or do i need a dongle or is it the same as a laptop but just smaller?
    lisa asked on
    1. Hi, there are two models of iPad you can buy. The basic one comes with built in wi-fi, this is the one I bought. You can connect to the Internet via wi-fi just as you would with a lap top. The second model comes with wi-fi and 3G, this means you can buy a sim card and connect to the Internet via a mobile phone network. This costs extra. You can find out more here http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad?mco=OTY2ODA0NQ

      Hope that helps
      David replied on

  6. I have no home broadband so I need a good package (3G) for net surfing/youtube etc. very few mails (no films, no downloads) what's available to start with ?
    Thanks
    susanne asked on
    1. Depends on which carrier supplies best signal for your area, vodafone and orange are the best two though.
      Alex replied on

  7. Can the screen be viewed outside in direct sunlight. I have in mind using the device with aerial photographs downloaded from Google Earth and ordinance survey maps when exploring derelict railways/canals. If the screen is difficult to see outside I would stick to my current method of taking a pile of paper printouts.
    Stuart asked on
    1. Hi. All should be ok as its just like having your mobile phone out in direct sunlight, as i have not had my ipad outside. I have had my iphone out in the sun and all wors fine. Hope this helps
      jonathan replied on

    2. Hi your ipad will work fine outside in direct sunlight with out to much glare but was long as you don't try to cause a dramatic sun shining against mirror effect . makes sense
      Helen replied on

  8. is it better than a laptop?can I watch online TV or listen radio?what happens if I go abroad?can i use it as normal?thanks
    irina asked on
    1. I find it better than a laptop because of it's touch screen. Not tried to load anything that takes up lots of memory though. you can download tv deries to watch, not sure about live tv. You do have access to the internet though so I assume you can do that, as long as you are in a wi-fi area. Not taken it abroad but again, as long as you are in a wi-fi area, I don't see why it would be any different.
      Janet replied on

  9. How compatible is the Ipad with cameras. I use a Nikon D300 and a Panasonic TZ10 but can't find out about downloading photos from them
    Mike asked on
    1. You can purchase a camera accessory from Apple which will allow you to transfere your pics from you camera to the iPad. Check out the online Apple store!
      BILL replied on

    2. i am sorry mike but i havent tried downloading any kind of photgraphic imagery content on to my ipad .
      james replied on

  10. How effective is it to use as a word processer for producing documents
    dan asked on
    1. It is effective at producing docs, but it is ideal for amending docs already produced.
      joe replied on

  11. hi could you instal a printer to a i pad does it have a place to put a disc?
    mark asked on
    1. Hi I have my printer hooked up to my ipad. Altough I have an HP wireless printer, I just downloaded an app from the apps store. There is no place on the Ipad for a disc. You wouldn't be able to actually connect a printer with leads to it. However if you haven't bought the printer yet, you can but a HP photosmart wireless for around £60 I can send you a link if needed. Hope this helps if you are still confused please ask any further questions.
      Kelly replied on

  12. Does you ipad have a cd drive
    Liam asked on
    1. NO
      A verified owner replied on

  13. Does an Ipad has an HDMI A/V output?
    Vanson asked on
    1. no sorry it doesnt
      alan replied on

    2. Sorry for the delay, I am afraid to say it does not.
      Philip replied on

  14. I have a external memory device called Estorr. Would I be able to acess this from my ipad and edit and work on my documents saved in it?
    Barbara asked on
    1. if the unit is USB there is no USB port available on the ipad. If the estorr device has an apple proprietory connecter on it you should be able to connect it to the bottom of the ipad and read the data contained on it within documents available from the apps store. please note the easiest way to work on documents on the ipad is to email them to the ipad so there just stored on it. however there is a unit called the hyperdrive available for connecttion to the ipad but they are expensive.
      janice replied on

    2. There is no direct support for a USB device on the iPad. If you want to share documents and work on them on a variety of devices, the easiest way is to open a Dropbox account. You can store and share up to 2GB absolutely free. Have a look at www.dropbox.com
      David replied on

  15. re portability, do you need to put one of those clear covers over the face of it (as you normally do with an ipod) or is it 'scratch-proof/handbag proof'.
    Maria asked on
    1. Well i know its pretty good in terms of getting no scratches, but i would always say buy the screen covers just for that extra protection and piece of mind, these can be bought online for under £5 and that gives you two covers. Also i would buy a case for it to go in, that way its well protected in bags ect.
      jonathan replied on

  16. does ipad have camera enabeling me to video call.....also can i install msn on it
    phil asked on
    1. no camera dont see why you cant have msn if you in wi-fi area.
      Janet replied on

  17. can i connect to messenger and see my family in oz
    frank asked on
    1. No.....ipad2 has a camera
      joe replied on

    2. not with the old one its not got a camera ipad2 has a camera
      jacqueline replied on

  18. how does the 3G work? what does it do, and why do you need a sim, what do you pay for??
    thanks Lauren
    Lauren asked on
    1. 3G enables you to connect to wireless broadband services when you are not in range of wi-fi. A sim card is needed in order to connect to the mobile network. Some mobile phone companies will send you a free sim card with no contract obligations. You can then use it on a pay as you go basis (I.e. £10 for 30 days from the date of top up, with a limit on the amount you can download). I just use it to download apps and surf the net in which a limit of 1GB is an ample. You don't need 3G if you are mostly within a wi-fi zone.
      Robert replied on

  19. is 16gb enough for what i need, which is mainly playing about 100 apps, about 900-100 songs, 2 films, very light email usage, and under 80 photos.
    lauren asked on
    1. Based on what I have read, a DVD stores approximately 4.7 GB of data hence two films would be pushing 10GB, 1000 songs would be 4-5GB and without continuing, 16GB is probably not enough bearing in mind you have in reality 13-14GB available due to the operating system. Applications and photos (depending upon quality) don't take that much room. I would go for the 32GB model.
      Robert replied on

  20. hi..my mother likes to play pogo, i think that uses java, will this work on ipad?
    Lindsey asked on
    1. If you go to the iTunes AppStore then it'll say whether it will or not.
      A verified owner replied on

  21. hi there
on the ipad 2 can you play games on the internet without any downloading eg. adobe flash?
    lulu asked on
    1. unfortunately not, apple doesnt allow flash to run on its systems, therefor all games must be downloaded from the app store
      JamesSweetman replied on

  22. Would I be able to send pictures by Bluetooth from ipad2, as i need to for my work, and i do it on my laptop at moment, and would I need a special dongle to do this.?
    Thanks.
    John asked on
    1. it has bluetooth Built in like the iphone. So its as easy sending a picture using bluetooth on your phone.
      ian replied on

  23. can i send pics by bluetooth by ipad, and do i need a dongle.?
    John asked on
    1. Yes it has Bluetooth Built in.The same as the iphone
      ian replied on

  24. my question is, as musician i'd like to use the i real book app (jazz numbers) how much would the app cost,oh and the other app would be jazz styles pack.hope you can help many thanks.
    Nick asked on
    1. I books app is free I have no info on the other app for jazz sorry
      stephen replied on

  25. could i send pictures by bluetooth from a ipad2, and do i need a dongle to do this. Thanks
    John asked on
    1. it already has bluetooth so you don't need a dongle.
      Jean replied on

  26. when i bye it off tesco do i get the cover with it ??
    Troy asked on
    1. No u need 2 buy the cover separately
      Mala replied on

    2. No

      mick replied on

    3. No. You have to buy the cover separately.
      Jean replied on

  27. I'm not sure whether 16gb is enough memory, does it allow you to fully use the iPad? Or are there some restrictions which would be removed with more gigabytes?
    Phil asked on
    1. no 16 gb is fine i have 2500 photos on mine and it has only used 500mb
      stephen replied on

    2. 16GB is enough memory if you want to put music and photos on it as these don't generally use much memory. On the other hand movies can require more memory but unless you intend to upload alot of movies then the 16GB is suffice. Note only approx. 14GB is available due to the operating system.
      Robert replied on

  28. Does 16GB seem like enough room?
    Conor asked on
    1. Depends on what you want to use it for. You actually get about 12gb. Apps, music and movies and a lot of room
      Mala replied on

  29. would you recomend the ipad2

    lois asked on
    1. Yes would recommend ipad2 good fun and quick 4 star

      mick replied on

    2. i would recommend it if you want to use it as an alternative for your laptop. As it is lighter. Web surfing is good too. depends on what you need it for.
      Mala replied on

  30. would you recomend the ipad 2
    ??????????
    lois asked on
    1. its a nice gadget and does a lot. if u want to use it as an alternative to your laptop or games go for it.
      Mala replied on

    2. Depends what you want to use it for
      Jean replied on

  31. can u make calls with it

    dale asked on
    1. you can make video calls using facetime
      ian replied on

  32. could you run two different things at a time for example facebook and facetime
    jack asked on
    1. do you mean run facetime on facebook??
You can run multiple apps at the same time thanks to multitasking but i dont think you use facetime on facebook but you might be able to run facetime and facebook at the same time.
      Mala replied on

  33. How limiting is the lack of adobe flash player? Do some web sites just have no content?
    Robert asked on
    1. mainly games that dont play on websites
      keith replied on

    2. Some shopping websites I use need flash installed. It's a real pain really.
      Janice replied on

  34. Is there any way to video call another device that is not an Apple/Ipad?
    Jac asked on
    1. my wife calls me through facetime to my iphone4, you need wi fi connection though. no other way to call anyone unless you get the 3g versions and subscribe to a tarrif.
      keith replied on

    2. As long as the other device has a webcam and you are both on skype (accounts are free) and on the internet then you can connect.

      Hope this helps
      Sheila replied on

  35. how good is the ipad2 for downloading books and reading quality
    rebecca asked on
    1. Hi, I only have the ipad not the new ipad2. Un less you are using it for gameing or require a camera save yourself £100 and buy the old one, if there are any left, thats what I did. The viewing quality is excellent and as with anything from apple downloading is a breeze. I hope this helps. Regards, Gren
      Gren replied on

  36. as a 13 yearold i am looking for some thing new as i always am already made an investment in the ipod 4g is this anything like the ipod 4g
    cameron asked on
    1. THIS IS EVEN BETTER
      LYNNE replied on

    2. Completely different i'm afraid.

The ipod is a more portable product, for things like the gym, mobile games etc.

The iPad (at the moment) is a more business focused device (most of the apps are for work), which may not suit your needs.

Stick with the ipod for the time being until maybe you start doing your GCSE's when the iPad may become a good choice.
      David replied on

  37. do you need an ipad sim for the wifi version of the ipad
    cameron asked on
    1. the cheaper one doe not have 3g, so does not allow a sim inside

you have to buy the more expensive ipad 3g

The basic ipad has a complete wi-fi, so to get it online outside you would have to contact your mobile phone company and pay a monthly usage fee.
inside the house or near a wi-fi hotspot ( free) it connects free to your router as the same as your P.C Etc, or the hotspots outside, not many of them in rural areas, plenty in cities
      hope the above helps

  38. As a siver surfer and not too technical - how easy is the ipad to set up?
I have BT internet package with wifi as service provider.
Have you any practical set up tips?
    Helen asked on
    1. Hi Helen,

Apple products are extremely easy to set up and connect to a wireless network. As long as your wireless router is broadcasting ( which I think they are set up to do by default) the iPad will ask you if you want to connect. Simply follow the on-screen instructions. If you get stuck, BT will be able to talk you through the process. Hope that helps. Happy surfing!

Is it good for social networking?
    Ellie asked on
    1. Hi, since buying the ipad i've used my laptop only once. Its a great web browser and brilliant for facebook and emails. I dont think you'll regret buying it.
      Lawrence replied on

    2. That is a difficult question. If your purchase is purely for enterainment, apps, movies, music, occasional browsing, Facebook, Twitter etc then I think the answer is yes. If you are looking to type documents, heavy use of Internet, Flash-based browsing, high-end gaming then no, I would say a laptop is better. The decision, ultimately, rests on whether you can compromise functionality (laptop) with experience (iPad).

  43. On a scale of 1-10 what (honestly) would you rate it?x

    Fifi asked on
    1. Really, I would rate it a 10 - it all depends what you want from a computer or tablet, but if you are mainly going to use it for the web, email, reading electronic books, music and video, it really cannot be beaten yet. I teach Computing at a college, and I'm finding that I am doing more and more of my work on it as well! Hope that helps!

    2. As above really, tablet or computer/laptop? I find it convenient to use for web browsing when I cannot be bothered to fire up my PC. I use it for watching movies and YouTube and I read the odd ebook. I like the convenience, some of the apps like Sky News cannot be bettered and if you do any of the things I have mentioned then you will love it. But would I have an Ipad instead of a laptop or PC definitely not! Would I have one to complement my existing Tech? - Yes!

    joe asked on
    1. If it an option of one or the other then for practicality the iPhone 4 is better. It is a phone an browser and the screen is amazing. I have both and and I find the iPad a nice addition to me bedside for reading or casual browsing ( damn flash). If I had to give up one I would surrender the iPad eventhough it is faster . The iPad screen is an irritant but only because I have the iPhone to compare. Have not used barcode app. Translating app google is fun.
      Daljeet replied on

    2. Depending what you prefer I have both and use the ipad at home more than the iphone but they both do the same apart from make calls unless your on skype or facetime, I had the barcode scanner but at the time it was released it didn't give many options, I have seen the other translation app only on the tv advert but it does look good. Games are better on the ipad due to the large screen but is sharper on the iphone. I think if I had the choice of one it would be the iphone but again if you use it for a lot of web browsing then it's the ipad just because of the screen size.

You can use FaceTime with iPhone 4's and the latest generation iPod touch as well as other iPad 2's (they all talk nicely to each other, you initialise the call either by a phone number or email address), or you can download fring (a video calling app) or Skype and video call people on android and nokia Symbian phones as well!

    1. Hi. Unfortunately, I was that amazed to find somewhere that had a stock of Ipad2s I didn't check any warranty details. Sorry.
      Jim replied on

    2. Yes. All new electronic consumer products sold in the UK are covered by a Statutory one year warranty - including Apple products. All insurance is personal choice - and personally I take a risk on the basis that maybe only 1 in 100 things will go faulty after a year and if it does I will just replace it - much cheaper than taking out insurance on everything!
      Ian replied on

    3. I've got to agree with Ian, the chances of it failing are pretty slim, save the cost of insurance and in 12 months time you will have a few bob towards a new bit of kit.
Oh did I mention, it's an Apple so won't fail. It just works!

e.g. Performance, number of applications I could install? Did you get to a point where you thought you should have gone for the 32/64 GB version.

    Clearly I'll have less storage.
    Bret asked on
    1. No problems thus far - loaded up a load of music, and just loading my 4th film, a few apps and docs, still 7.8GB free. If you want more films then I'd go for a bigger one. I use AVS to rip the films and they take up around 750MB each

    2. You can never have too much storage especially with the no. Of apps to try , music, films, I feel that if you intend to use this for business you will be limited with 16gb but will not make much difference to performance initially

    1. Lucky boy, winning one. These are great fun to use and extremely useful, I am a photographer and wanted it for practical reasons, ie, an electronic portfolio. I guess it all depends on what you want to use it for, if you just want fun then go to the app store and browse for games etc, there are loads of free apps, my intrest is sport and as such I downloaded tons of sport apps, all for free, the Eurosport one is brilliant.
All your synching and photo/music transfer has to be done via itunes so if you don't have that installed you need to get it now. Just google itunes and you'll find it easy. The times I have got a bit stuck I have just googled my query and came across forums that have resolved my issues.

Yes the screen can be seen in the sunlight if the brightness is turned up, no it doesn't have a usb port it has an Apple connector whihc you can connect to the usb port of a PC/MAC, Yes you can get many apps for free, no you can't add an SD card to it

    2. Hi
a). The screen in sunlight is ok. Remember it's flat so you will get reflections, but you can get matte screen protectors to reduce glare.
b). There are no USB or sd card ports on any apple products. The memory you buy is the memory you get.
Currently you transfer your music, pictures films etc via your iTunes account. Look out for ios5 and iCloud coming in September. This is a virtual server which you can access you iTunes account directly.
      C
c). The apple apps store has more apps than any other. A lot of games are free. There are no free films that I know of. Once again the memory you purchase (16,32,64) the storage dictates what you put on it.
No, one tablet, will do everything foe everybody, much like iPhones blackberrys htcs etc. Pick what suits you best. Google some reviews.

    claire asked on
    1. As I understand you can only add a Sim card with the 3g version. The cheapest iPad which I have has only one connection point for charging, for connecting to a computer. With this model you have to rely on WiFi. Otherwise the iPad does very well what you would expect and the Apps available are superb.

Unfortunatley the IPAD2 does not have a USB port to allow you to connect a 'data dongle', it does however allow you to connect to an Iphone (not sure if you can connect to others as we have only tried an Iphone), we set up a personal hotspot which then allowed to connect throught the iphone (under general/ network settings)

    mary asked on
    1. Hi Mary, just having wifi or wifi and 3G depends on what type of person you are, if you are the person that will use the iPad at home and on the road or at work or anywhere I would recommend that you get the wifi and 3G. If you are not that type of person and like to stay at home with the iPad or in bt hotspots-some cafe's have these or at a friends house it would be best if you had an iPad with just
wifi. Having an ipad2 with wifi and 3G it gives you alot more
flexibility. I have an iPad2 myself with wifi only I get Internet at home at other people's homes and in cafe's-with bt hotspots and it's great but if wanted to get Internet anywhere at anytime I would get an ipad2 with wifi and 3G. I hope that my answer has helped you.

If you want to use it in the car, on the street etc you will need the 3G iPad, and that does have a monthly Internet cost with it.

    melissa asked on
    1. Bit like apples and oranges. You have to think of iPads as a new type of device. Super portable, very easy to use but limited in functionality. Great for armchair email, web browsing, games console and ipod all in one. I use ours as controller for Sonos home sound system. Kids use for games and to watch films/videos on journeys (yes, you CAN do that on a laptop in theory but try telling that to my 5 year old who has no issues holding iPad but would a laptop). Not an alternative or a progression (like an ipod was a massive jump on from walkman) but a different device. We have three laptops in the house and one iPad, sometimes they get used for the same tasks, sometimes different ones. Hope that helps.

    1. Hi Henri, an iPad will be as good as you want it to be. I run everything through mine, multiple email accounts. All my web browsing, my calendars etc sync seamlessly with google. It's a great piece of kit and if you use it to it's potential its great value for money!

    1. If you have a normal sky subscription you can watch the same channels on the iPad using skygo app. Only the sky sports, movies and news at the moment. There is no additional charge for this. If you dont have a sky subscription it costs £5 a month I think. You can also get sky news and sky sports news apps, these are free .

As to university work I would recommend a traditional computer (pc, Mac, laptop) there are limitations to it's use in streaming an visibility of the inernet due to it's lack of flash. It is great to have as a secondary product. I think you can use a router to create a wifi connection at uni bu not sure.

  103. I am a pensioner and would like to get an iPad2 to use at home and not interested in using it outside. Do you think this is a sensible buy and I have asked my ISP if I could use this just as I do my computer through my router and they have told me that I cannot use this through my router as the iPad does not have Ethernet.
Could someone explain to me how I would use my iPad2 and what the costs would be through a provider and I would want it to have Wi-Fi as I have a wireless printer.

    Many many thanks.
    Jeanette asked on
    1. The ipad2 will work with wifi as it has it built in, re connecting to the web you would obviously require an Internet provider I use Sky and do not have any problems connecting.

    2. Hello,
My Ipad2 is mostly used around the house for mail & surfing when I don't want to fire up the desktop. It is so quick & easy to use the Ipad it gets much more use than I imagined - it really is a boon.
If you do not have a wi-fi enabled router you will definitely need to get one to replace your existing kit that connects your PC using Ethernet. I think they're about £20 - £30 from someone like Amazon. No need to change your ISP - or even tell them. You should be aware that if you need technical support for broadband they may quibble if you're not using the router they supplied but I've found they come round if you put a strong, logical case.
If you do need to change the router, I'd go the full hog & get one that supports 300mbps and also get a USB Wi-Fi dongle for the PC (about £15). The Ipad will run very well and the PC will be faster than over 100mbps Ethernet.
At the moment you'll need to connect the Ipad to the PC occasionally for backup & update purposes - via a USB cable that comes with the Apple.
      Hope this helps.

Does iPad2 have any bluetooth potential?
    Jonathan asked on
    1. Hi, it does have bluetooth capacity which is located in settings as on an iphone. Unfortunately, I don't have a Blackberry so can't answer that part. I didn't want contract costs of 3G on my ipad as I have it on my iphone. An iphone does pretty much what an ipad does but with a smaller screen but you can't make calls on the ipad even with 3G, so an iphone may be your best bet. Depends what you plan to use it for. Hope this helps a little.

    Richard asked on
    1. Your main problem would be Apple is not very good working with Microsoft, so you may not get powerpoint to work as well. I have to say if I could only have one, I would go for the laptop as you can do more because the laptop is a computer and has drivers built in the iPad2 does not.

    Christina asked on
    1. You don't need a dongle for the iPad. If you get the iPad without 3G (WiFi only), you can go on the internet via your wireless router. If you want her to go on the web wherever she is, you will need an iPad with 3G. This is where the iPad uses the mobile phone network and you will have to subscribe to a provider. Mine is WiFi only and as long as I'm at home or somewhere with WiFi, I can use the internet.

  128. Hello, firstly is this a lot better then say the Samsung Galaxy Tab?? And secoundly is there a sims 3 app avaliable for the iPad 2, and if there is how much does it cost?? thanku!
    Jaymee asked on
    1. Hi firstly I think the iPad is better than the tab as it's bigger and easier to use, when you use the keyboard to type there is no problems as it's a good size and easy to use.

The Sims 3 app is £2:99 there are others like ambitions at £1:99 also a few bolt ons at cheaper prices.
They only thing that I think is a pain is that it dosnt support flash so some videos don't play but not a big enough problem to say go for the tab ther are ways around it once you get one.

      Hope this helps

    1. If you are a techi then probably good for you. I don't like it. Some apps are free - some work and some don't. Don't think you can set it up on printer. Tried to take it back after two weeks - but Tesco refused to refund me.

    2. Hi, They are a nice looking tool and very easy to use (in my view) over other tablets. Some apps are free and some you pay for. There are word processing tools such as document which includes spreadsheets aswell. You can print documents via the network or bluetooth.

It is really is your call if you should purchase one though. I think they are great but the price tag for an entry level will still set you back £400.

I hope that answers your question.

  137. I dont know whether to get the new ipad 2 but i dont have wifi at home i use a dongle for my computer, would it be worth me getting one.
    sharon asked on
    1. If you have Broadband at home you could change it to a wifi router for under £30.00 and away you go. If not it's still great for storing and looking at your photos, music etc., but you'd need to go to a wifi hotspot to download books, apps etc. I took my iPad on holiday to Corfu and used it all the time to get the weather and even listen to Chris Evans' Breakfast Show! You can still do quite a lot by plugging it's USB cable into your dongled computer and getting stuff that way.

Otherwise you'll have to go for the 3G model but that's a fair bit more money.

    Aneesa asked on
    1. I didn't get an extra guarantee and mine is still going strong after a year. It depends whether you want to take the risk or not. I think generally these things should last longer than a year and in 3 years you will probably want to update it as they will have brought out a more up to date model. The only accessory I think you will need is a case. Hope this helps.

    sophia asked on
    1. oh gawd...i have both! i use my ipad for reading the news, ebooks, getting up to date info on restaurants, maps etc and checking emails when I am away and not with my laptop. I need my laptop for writing longer "business" emails for the key pad on the ipad is a bit too dinky for my fingers and if I am writing a report or story I use my desktop. The ipad has great ease of use on trains, planes etc and fits into my coat pocket but the deciding issue is the keyboard in my opinion. How much do you need to write? Reading books and newspapers is possibly better on ipad than laptop cos of great definition ( I download my photos from my digital camera to review what I have taken) but writing more than short memos, surfing comprehensively on the net is better on laptop. 1. It depends on which version you buy - the WI-Fi only version requires a wireless broadband connection. The more expensive version additionally has a sim facility which requires either a PAYG or Contract data package. You can of course use Wi-Fi on this version too. Hope this helps!

  156. Our daughter is about to take up employment on a cruise liner. We are thinking about getting her an ipad2 in an effort to keep in touch particularly via face time. Will she be able to with the standard WiFi or will she require the 3G version? Are you aware of any other possible problems using it on a ship?
    Andy asked on
    1. Hi There,

I use Skype normally rather than facetime as those that I keep in touch with don't have apple products. I use normal wifi to do this and it works perfectly. I only have the wifi iPad 2 not the 3G model. I should imagine it works exactly the same. I have been very happy with how it all works and the great connection. So long as the ship has good wifi signal on board, I can't imagine she would encounter any problems. She would need to ensure that she is where the signal is strong to get good connection.

Hope that answers all your concerns.
      Sean replied on

    2. Facetime only works through wifi - not 3G so, if there is no other reason for 3G no need to buy more expensive version. We are perfectly happy with wi-fi only & use facetime almost every day (ipad to iphone).
      Robert replied on

    3. No probs as long as there is wifi. My brother in law worked as a network technician on a cruse liner and informed me there is no problem as long as there is sufficient wifi signal in the area she will want to use it in, ie: crew quaters !
      Rob replied on

    4. As long as the cruise liner has wifi through out, which is pretty much standard nowadays, there is no point getting the 3G model. It's an extra cost with out the benefits. You can access FaceTime, Skype and other video apps all through the wifi.

    1. You seem to be pretty up there with your bits and pieces. Its basically a large iPhone. I have an iMac, macbook, iPad and iPhone. I can honestly say I use them all. The iPad is fantastic for on the go surfing. Its lightweight and is so easy to use. The Apps are fab on it, my favourite is Sky go, you can watch movies, sports etc. I also watch the inlayer, channel 4 and itv player on it. Have a think about your pros and cons. For me its an absolute must.

    3. I think if u have an iPhone u pretty much know what ur getting, however I find the pad an advantage because of the larger scale. My laptop has pretty much become redundant since I purchased my iPad simple because of the sheer ease of use, portability and convenience of it. There's not much it can't do really, and surfing the web is as easy as 1 2 3. The only ever downside I find is that it doesnt have flash... However it's not often I need flash! I generally use the iPad for; surfing the web, writing essays for uni, browsing photos and showing others holiday snaps etc., socialising via Facebook, listening to music, reading books, watching tv ( u can get 'on demand' apps for pretty much every main uk tv channel as well as a great up called 'film on plus' which has pretty much every free view channel and more. To be honest the list goes on! I actually can't remember what I did before I had one ! Hope this s helpful :)

    Ray asked on
    1. The ipad screen is backlit and the glass gets finger smudges which make reading books for long periods uncomfortable. If all you want is to read books you will be much happier with an e-reader like the Amazon kindle which has a completely different display, which is just like a book. Both will enable you to enlarge the text as much as you need.

    3. As far as I am aware the book section does not read them for you.
However, you can double the size of the font by pinching your fingers together, or, sometimes on thebottom right hand side there is a figure X2, which should double the font size.

      Hope this helps

  161. Can it take HD pictures and send them to an iPod touch?
    David asked on
    1. I'm not much of a picture taker. So I don't know about the pixel count on the iPad. I do though use a lot of Apple kit. The kids and I take various pictures and typically upload them to our iTunes accounts. More and more though we just stick pictures on Facebook. We don't have any iPod touches. I've got an iPhone and small iPod nano (the little square one). I swap pictures around easily on all of my stuff, including the Nano.
But you can't directly get a picture from an iPad to an iPod. You take the picture then e-mail it, facebook it, stick it in the cloud, or put it on your iTunes. Then you or anyone you want, can access it, or download it, as long as they can conect to the web, whick I assume the iPod touch can do.

    1. iCloud is space provided by apple to allow you backup certain files from your apple products. IOS is the operating system your apple product runs on. In a few months iPad 2 will reduce in cost due to the launch of the iPad 3. I would pay extra for the ipad2 instead of iPad 1 it's faster and gives you FaceTime etc. I'm a novice but these are my thoughts.

As for games, the usual suspects are pretty good e.g. Angry birds, most games on mine are for my kids (6 & 4), and they enjoy games like jet pack joyride and sonic racing. The reviews on the app store normally give you an idea of how good an app or game are.
